The first match for me in a fortnight took me to Mile End to see Tower Hamlets take on the second-string Grays Athletic side in the Peter Butcher Trophy Round Two stage. The hosts named a mixture of first-teamers and youthful players in their starting XI with Jordan Stanbury in goal behind a back four containing full-backs Kris Queeley and Joshua Rusoke and experienced centre-backs Tola Odedoyin and player-boss AJ Ashinike. Luke With and Dominic Weston were among the substitutes. For Philip Sackey’s team, Manraj Phagura skippered the side with strong forward Theirry Fang leading the line.
The match began in quite a muted fashion as Hamlets set about getting their passing game going with their opponents looking to adapt to both their surroundings and their opposition. Hamlets wingers Yohan Edoukai and Jamie Yila looked handy down the flanks with their pace and trickery. The hosts broke the deadlock on 18 minutes as Edoukai made a darting run down the right and beat visiting custodian Liam Tuitt one-on-one as the ball went under his legs and into the net.
After a fair period of mostly possession-based play for both sides, Grays did get force their hosts back in terms of territory somewhat. Five minutes before the break, Grays forward Denzil Adebiyi blazed an effort wide of the right-side post, following a long throw into the box. Although the visitors did keep the home defence alert, they couldn’t really bring about that telling final ball to create the oppurtunities to test Jordan Stanbury in the Hamlets goal.
Half-Time: T Hamlets 1 – 0 Grays Athletic Res
If the first half was quite quiet in terms of goal-mouth action, the same was less so in the second half. Hamlets took advantage of a half-sleepy Grays defence early-doors as only a minute into the half, forward Suaibo Balde powered home a curling effort into the corner in what was a well-taken strike. AJ Ashinike’s team made it three only seven minutes later from a penalty spot as Montel Williams lashed home from 12 yards, right into the top corner giving Tuitt very little chance.
The hard-working Hamlets forward line continued to stretch the visitors as we got into the latter stages as another good delivery from Edoukai found substitute Eziekiel Kamara though his effort was closed down by the visiting back-line. Hamlets did get a fourth in the closing minutes as a lovely move saw substitute Ismael Traore-Mendy send in a teasing cross which Kamara prod home superbly to add some gloss to the score-line.
In fairness, Hamlets were not entirely dominant in this match and Grays did get a goal, with the last kick of the game. A free-kick came about in a promising position, 20 yards out – captain Manraj Phagura stepped up a curled home a beaut right into the left corner, evading Stanbury and his defenders.
All in all, this was a good afternoon’s work for Hamlets as they advance into the next round. I’d like to thank them for their hospitality today. Thanks also to Rob Errington.
