Both teams before KO…

On a kind dry evening, the Essex Senior League got underway for the 2018-19 season as Woodford Town entertained Leyton Athletic at their new temporary home at the Harlow Arena.

Woodford have largely kept the same squad from last term, save for Alex Reed in goal, replacing the now retired Nick Wilson. Best wishes to you Nick. In another change from last term, Ola Ogunwamide lined up further forward and joined Samir Ali and playmaker Ethan Kessel in attack for Town. Leyton Athletic had Kieran Southgate, Isaac Atugumya and Daniel Francis leading the line for them.

The match got underway and quite early on, you could ascertain that the hosts were ‘up for it’ with Ola Ogunwamide particularly stretching the Leyton back-line with his rapid runs down the right flank and he twice forced visiting ‘stopper James Scammell into decent saves early on.

If there was one ‘criticism’ of the hosts early-doors, it was that they didn’t have a final ball. The over-worked goalkeeper Scammell gathered a few crosses as the visiting defence was being over-run by the quick Woodford attacks. Leyton did have sporadic chances though didn’t severely test Alex Reed in the Woodford goal. Woodford did eventually break the deadlock midway through the first half as Ogunwamide was found superbly by a cross-field pass that and the converted wing-back beat the off-side trap and lobbed Scammell well after the ‘keeper slipped coming out of his six-yard area.

Leyton winger Daniel Francis’ free-kick was well-gathered by Reed moments later before Town had three decent chances to extend their lead though centre-back Ricardo Shaw, winger Connor Leon and forward Samir Ali failed to beat Scammell.

Half-Time: Woodford Town 1 – 0   Leyton Athletic

The second half began with Leyton boss Jason Ngandu making all three substitutes as Foster, James and Ntumba all joined the action. Woodford struck twice in five minutes to realistically seal the points as first, Chinua Phinn-Archer [56′] beat Scammell one-on-one and passed the ball into the net, only two minutes after coming off the bench. Then after a punch from the Leyton ‘keeper went awry, Kessel lobbed a cool strike into the top left corner on the hour mark.

Leyton had a good chance to pull one back on 68 minutes as a super deep cross from midfielder Nathan Muskitta found forward Kieran Southgate though the latter’s header needed Reed to make a decent save to keep it out. Woodford spurned chances to really make this a rout as Kessel and full-back Routledge both sent efforts wide of goal.

Athletic got some brief respite with Southgate’s drive was well tipped wide for a corner by Reed though fell further behind on 81 minutes as Ogunwamide made another good darting run and beat Scammell with aplomb. As we entered the last few minutes of proceedings, Ogunwamide and Kessell had further chances to add to the score-line though Leyton did ruin a likely clean-sheet a minute from time as a terrific ball from Francis on the left wing found substitute Dwade James who had a simple tap-in from close range.

All in all, Woodford were very good value for this win and their play was bright and incisive for most of the match. If they can keep this form going then it would not surprise me if they have another good season. As for Leyton, if they don’t pick up their level of performance then this could be another very long season for them.

On a slightly grey day at Leslie Field, relegation-threatened Burnham took on mid-table Woodford in another crunch Essex Senior League encounter. For the hosts, Charlee Hughes and Karl Swanborough led the line with recent signing Alex Salmon skippering the side and partnering Jamie Marsh in the heart of the defence. For the visitors, target-man Temi Babalola was the physical presence in attack with playmaker Ethan Kessel and Andrea Montavani among those in a supporting role.

I had a feeling before kick-off there would be goals in this one and the start didn’t disappoint. Three minutes in, Burnham had a close-range effort scrambled off the goal-line. Only five minutes later, the hosts led as Robert Bagnall’s fine cross from the right was headed home by Karl Swanborough past visiting goalkeeper Nick Wilson. Unsurprisingly, this buoyed the hosts and only a good tackle in the area denied hot-shot Charlee Hughes a decent chance on goal soon after.

Woodford did start to find their rhythm going forward as we passed the quarter-hour mark as winger Connor Leon’s goal-bound effort was well tipped over by Burnham custodian Adam French. Moments later, Town full-back Leon Wildman’s lung-busting run down the right flank wasn’t rewarded as his decent ball in found ‘nobody home’ for his side in the Burnham area.

The hosts doubled their lead on 26 minutes as a Hughes free-kick rather fortuitously found the on-rushing Brad Morgan in the area who slotted home well.

Town responded five minutes later as a well-struck floating free-kick found centre-back & skipper Jack Grosvenor free at the back post and he headed home with aplomb. Burnham could’ve extended their lead ten minutes before the break though Hughes uncharacteristically fired wide. Woodford had chances to level though Montovani, Kessel and Leon couldn’t find the target, the latter being a curling effort that just sailed wide of the post.

 

Half-Time: Burnham 2 – 1 Woodford

Burnham made a change at the break as Adekunle Adeyemi replaced Sam Warwick, who I thought had a decent game today. On with the action though and home ‘keeper French was called into action again on 52 minutes as Connor Leon’s drive was well-tipped over. The hosts responded as substitute Julian Bavin was well-denied by Woodford goalkeeper Wilson. Adeyemi also started to make his presence felt too with a long-range drive which fizzed wide. Bavin also did well to round Wilson though skied his effort over from a tight angle.

Woodford once again responded and looked dangerous at times though Babalola twice couldn’t find the target in three minutes midway into the half. Soon after, Burnham skipper Alex Salmon made a crucial tackle to deny Town a good sight of goal.

There had been signs that tensions were boiling over during the match though with 13 minutes remaining, Woodford were down to ten men and honestly, it could’ve been worse for them. Burnham did find a ‘final flourish’ as Wilson denied Bill Howard late on. Minutes later, a superb ball in by Adeyemi found Swanborough and the forward held off a Woodford defender well to slot home the crucial third goal for his side. As we entered added-time, Swanborough was well found again though this time Wilson denied him though the hosts held firm to claim their first win of 2018.

Full-Time: Burnham Ramblers 3 – 1 Woodford Town

In fairness, Burnham were fired-up today which is what they needed though they remain in the bottom four on goal difference after this victory, it will undoubtedly boost their confidence after a really good team display. Woodford were threatening at times going forward as Ethan Kessel was among those who played well though defensively it was a ‘bad day at the office’. That said, Woodford sit 12th and are having a more than decent season.

Hello & welcome to my regular round-up of the action in the Essex Senior League this weekend, with several interesting results affecting both ends of the table.

 

Friday 23rd March

West Essex 2 – 0 Waltham Forest
| Venue: Mayesbrook Park  | Att: 41

The action started on Friday night as West Essex defeated Forest at Mayesbrook Park. Michael Mignot struck again for the hosts to put them ahead 12 minutes into the second half & late on, a sweet Joe Lefley free-kick sealed the points and the Stags’ third win in their last five and they rise to 7th in the table. Forest’s predictament is rather blue as thanks to other results, they drop into the bottom four, a point from safety as their recent winless run extends to seven matches.

 

Burnham Ramblers  2 – 2  FC Romania
| Venue: Leslie Field  | Att: 35

Burnham made a rousing comeback to clam their first point of 2018 against promotion-chasing FC Romania at Leslie Field. The visitors were two-up within ten minutes as first Alexandru Bostina [5′] and then Mihai Circiumaru put Ion Vintila’s side in a good position. The visitors didn’t take their chances following that though and paid for it as first Julian Bavin [19′] had a hand in the hosts first before hot-shot Charlee Hughes got a dramatic leveller in injury-time. Ramblers still drop to second-bottom, two points from safety though may have grafted some hope from this result. FCR stay third though are now seven points adrift of leaders Redbridge with Basildon chasing them down as well.

 

Hackney Wick  0 – 4  Sawbridgeworth Town
| Venue: Old Spotted Dog  | Att: 23

Wick stumbled to another damaging defeat at the OSD. Sawbo took the points through a brace from Aaron Thomas plus strikes from hot-shot Toby Cleaver and Matt Frew. Wick remain bottom, 12 points from safety now while Sawbridgeworth’s third win in their last four matches keeps them 10th, two points behind Ilford.

Ilford  1 – 3  Enfield 1893  | Venue: Cricklefield | Att: 50

An Ilford side that’s somewhat ‘in-transition’ were defeated by in-form Enfield at Cricklefield. The visitors were two ahead by the quarter-hour as Dan Chambers [13′] and Ayo Odukoya [15′] gave Matt Hanning’s side the advantage. Recent signing Harry Watkins pulled one back from the spot nine minutes later before Aundre Spencer sealed the win midway through the second half. The Foxes third defeat in four leaves them 9th while Enfield are 14th, six points clear of the bottom four.

Redbridge  3 – 0   Takeley
| Venue: Oakside | Att: 69

The Motormen drove on to another important victory, this time over rivals Takeley at Oakside, in a match were both sides ended with ten men. Talismanic striker Brian Moses put his side ahead 14 minutes in, before strike partner Thomas Gogo doubled that lead five minutes later. An incident ended with both Moses and Takeley defender George Powell seeing red before Gogo coverted a late penalty to seal the hosts fourth straight win and open up a two-point lead over Wakering at the summit. Takeley remain 5th, with up to seven matches in hand on the top four though are 22 points behind second-placed Wakering.

Southend Manor  1 – 1 Great Wakering Rovers
| Venue: Southchurch Park  | Att: 107

This local derby so nearly ended with a victory for the hosts but Wakering levelled right at the death. After a goal-less opening 45, Brennon Nolan put Manor ahead on 65 minutes before the late drama which saw Ricky Evans secure a point for Iain O’Connell’s promotion-chasers. Manor are winless in their last four matches now, sitting 12th with ten matches to play. GWR’s four-match winning run ended here and are 2nd, two points behind leaders Redbridge.

 

Stansted   1 – 3    Barkingside
| Venue: Hargrave Park | Att: 46

Stansted were on the recieving end of a Barkingside revival at Hargrave Park. It started well for the Airportmen as Ryan Ramsey gave them the lead after only three minutes. Though ‘Side responded ten minutes later through new signing Rob Hodgson before Aaron Lesta [70′] and Raphael Duyile [78′] sealed the turnaround to end a six-match winless run, they sit 15th, four points clear of the bottom four. Stansted fall behind their opponents and are only two points clear of danger in 16th and are winless in five matches themselves.

 

Wadham Lodge 1 – 4  Basildon Utd
| Venue: Kitchener Road  | Att: 34

Basildon’s first-half performance saw them well on their way to another big victory at Kitchener Road. James Peagram [3′], Ollie Spooner [24′], Marcus Bowers [35’] strikes saw Marc Harrison’s side lead comfortably at the break. Substitute Jack Adlington added a fourth on the hour before Wadham got a consolation through Danny Francis with 11 minutes remaining. Wadham sit third-bottom, two points from safety. The Bees got their third straight win as they gained ground on FC Romania ahead of them plus the Bees have three matches in hand.

Woodford Town (2017)  2 – 1  Clapton
| Venue: Goffs Lane | Att: 133

Woodford secured a good win at Goffs Lane. Dion Lewis-Kirwan put Woodford ahead before Sham Barnwell levelled for the Tons. De’Juane Taylor-Crossdale got the winner as the obtained their third win in their last seven matches to remain 11th, six points clear of Southend Manor. Clapton’s fourth straight league defeat leaves them 6th though West Essex are seven points behind them with three matches in hand over the Tons.

Enfield upset Sawbo with an excellent victory at Crofters. Ben Bradbury struck on 18 minutes to give strugglers Enfield the lead before Billy Skinner levelled for John Watters’ men on the half-hour. Bradbury grabbed his second just shy of the hour before Joe Johnson [73′] secured a much-needed win for Matt Hanning’s side.

 

Sporting Bengal Utd 2 – 3  Southend Manor
| Venue: Mile End Stadium  | Att: 20

Manor edged Bengal to claim all three points at Mile End. Manor led through Rhys Fatt’s opener 20 minutes in before goalkeeper Klinton Makayabo found the net just a minute later. Steven Carvell [32′] halved the deficit for the hosts before Alfie Lindfield restored Manor’s two-goal cushion 20 minutes from time. Syed Tanvir Ahmed pulled another one back for the hosts five minutes later though Manor held on to claim an important victory.

Stansted  2 – 3  Clapton   | Venue: Hargrave Park | Att: 122

Clapton powered to an important win in difficult conditions at Hargrave Park. The Tons led thanks to goals from Jay Morris [12′] and Dylan Ebengo [20′] before Ryan Ramsey struck for the Airportmen on the half-hour. Jeff Cobblah [63′] continued his scoring run to make it 1-3 though Julien Lloyd rounded out the scoring for the hosts two minutes from time.

Waltham Forest  1 – 1   FC Romania   |  Venue: Kitchener Road  | Att: 30

Forest hit back to hold FC Romania at Kitchener Road. Vlad Sighiartau put the in-form visitors ahead seven minutes after the break. Elias Siligato struck [74′] to level things and it finished that way as FCR lost ground on rivals Great Wakering.

Woodford weathered a Burnham comeback to secure a good victory at Goffs Lane. Gemal Nfodjo [2], De’Juane Taylor-Crossdale [2] and a super Andrea Montovani free-kick secured the win for Town, Karl Swanborough and Robert Bagnall scored the visitors’ goals in a seven-minute spell.

On a chilly evening at Oakside, leaders Redbridge welcomed mid-table Woodford Town in another Essex Senior League encounter. The Motormen were led by Brian Moses and Calvin Poku in attack, with Reside Coxi-Sebastfao on the left flank, who scored a hat-trick against the same opponents earlier in the season. Woodford’s forward line was led by livewire Larry Asare and Ethan Kessel.

Pre-match, one or two may well have had Redbridge down to win this fixture convincingly though as it turned out, it wasn’t quite that. The visitors did start proceedings fairly well as they made sure the Motormen defence were alert with a couple of near-misses. Twelve minutes in, a powerful drive from Town forward Larry Asare was well-saved by home goalkeeper Lewis Greene.

Redbridge couldn’t really get going at their best going forward though Brian Moses and winger Reside Coxi-Sebastfao spurned half-chances. On 34 minutes, arguably against the run of play, the hosts took the lead as from skipper Eljay Worrell’s corner, Moses headed home past visiting stopper Nick Wilson. It stayed that way at the break, with the visitors still well in the match and were arguably unfortunate to be behind, although they couldn’t find that telling final ball to breach the home defence.

Half-Time: Redbridge 1 – 0 Woodford Town

A minute into the second half, Asare struck an effort wide as Town were looking to level. Their chances took a knock when Dion Lewis-Kirwan was dismissed for a second booking six minutes after the interval. Just past the hour mark, the hosts nearly doubled their lead as Moses ghosted past several Woodford defenders but couldn’t find the finish. Although they found it tougher with ten men, the visitors still put the ‘hard yards’ in, particularly at the back with Town skipper Jack Grosvenor making a number of good challenges.

Into the last 20 minutes or so, and Moses & midfielder Shaun Harris had efforts that couldn’t find the target. Town defender Grosvenor denied Redbridge substitute Jacob Dingli a icertain goal with a good goal-line clearance with 15 minutes left. Soon after, Town had a goal chalked off for off-side and their frustrations were evident by this stage. Dingli was denied late on by Wilson as the striker was one-on-one with the Town ‘keeper.

Redbridge sealed the points in added-time as Wilson had denied an initial attack though Moses grabbed his second with a low curling effort into the right corner. They say ‘It doesn’t matter how you win, just that you do’ and on this occasion, Ricky Eaton & Joey May’s side did exactly that without being at their best, not that they will mind much as this was their 8th straight league win. Woodford should take some solace though from their performance here as in phases, they played well and made it difficult for the league leaders.

The ESL ‘Ground-Hop’ Day – Sat 11th November 2017

Well, you may have seen some of the match reports from the Essex Senior League ‘Ground-Hop’ Day event, though what did the occasion feel like?

So, as part of a good ‘crew’ that included ESL Chair Rob Errington and respected fellow Non-League colleague Peter Dudley, we set off through the maze of traffic to reach Oakside, home of Redbridge FC, for their match against Burnham Ramblers, which kicked off proceedings at midday.

I will say that the Motormen always give you a decent welcome, led by Programme/Website chap Adam Silver though being honest, the hot food helps as well! Anyway it did seem like a few ground-hoppers and perhaps curious punters had joined the crowd to watch proceedings. To be fair, the match itself was a good one as the hosts showed why there are one of the in-form teams in the division right now. Though as I’ve said previously, Burnham are a different proposition this season compared to last term. They are spirited, more determined and decent going forward too.

I’m not usually in a rush to head off post-match though today it was rather a necessity, what with the next match kicking-off about a half-hour afterwards. Joined by ESL Secretary (& organiser of this event) Michelle Dorling in the ‘Batmobile’ (Well, it was jokingly called that so I thought I’d leave it in), the four of us just about made the start of the second designated match at 2.30pm – Waltham Forest v Woodford Town at Kitchener Road,Walthamstow. It’s been documented in the last week or so that Forest are in some financial strife as they look to keep the club going on to & past its 150th anniversary next season, and while the match itself was alright, the result didn’t go the way of the hosts. Being at the ground was a bit of a change for me as I don’t get round there that often, chiefly due to its location. I sincerely wish Forest all at Forest well in their efforts to preserve the club going forward.
With regards to Woodford Town, I could see why they’ve been scoring a few goals this term though they are probably seeking what quite a few other sides are – that ‘holy grail’ of consistency.

Right, well with the darkening sky well on its way, we made our way to our third and final match of the day at the Old Spotted Dog for the 5.30pm KO between Hackney Wick and Wadham Lodge. The chill in the air had also set in by this point though once settled, my attention turned to this encounter which was an important one at the bottom of the table.

Along with Woodford, I hadn’t seen Wadham this term before today though I’m well aware they won’t want to recall the tough start to the season that they had to endure. The visitors looked decent at times as they got the result with their superior finishing being the difference in my opinion.

As far as the ‘occasion’ goes, I don’t think anyone can complain about a lack of goals (12 in three matches). And that adds to my (and others) thoughts that this season is ‘on its way’ nicely at both ends of the table. Perhaps future occasions of this ilk could have one or two matches on a Sunday or Bank Holiday afternoon though for a debut, it was really rather good. Days like this may help most clubs, though particularly those whose attendances aren’t that strong.
In the main though, ‘more of the same’ please. The ESL is ‘on the rise’ and long may that continue.

The day dawned with the excitement of the first-ever Hop by conveying Scott and Peter and the resultant chats added to the whole experience of the three matches, all ending 3-1 or 1-3, being very memorable. A day to remember indeed and hopefully to be repeated.

Essex Senior League & EOFL round-up (12.11.17)

Hello & welcome to the round-up of this weekend’s action in the Essex Senior League here on my blog. We start with the Friday night match, then move to the various matches that took place in the ESL on Saturday.  And there’s a run-down of the results from the Essex Olympian League matches.

Friday 10th November

Barkingside 2 – 3    Clapton

Venue: Cricklefield  |   Attendance: 273

Clapton triumphed at Cricklefield despite not having a recognised goalkeeper in the side. Clapton’s Jeffrey Cobblah broke the deadlock ten minutes before half-time. Barkingside levelled right on half-time through Besi Toke though the Tons led once again three minutes after the break, through Ryan Reed [48’]. The hosts levelled again through Michael Ogboin [75’]. Reed produced a cracker to win it with five minutes remaining. It proved some way to ‘go out’ as the next day it was announced that Reed had signed for Bostik North side (and last season’s ESL champions) Barking. After the weekend matches, Clapton sit in 4th place while ‘Side are 13th.

Saturday 11th November (in KO order)

Redbridge   3 – 1   Burnham Ramblers     (12pm KO)

Venue: Oakside    |   Attendance: 106

Redbridge got the win in the early kick-off to start off the ESL ‘Ground-Hop Day’ in an entertaining affair. Brian Moses gave the Motormen an 8th-minute lead though the visitors levelled a minute before the break through debutant Fraser Inns. Second-half goals from Moses [63’] and substitiute Tommie Turner [85’] sealed the hosts’ 12th win of the campaign and they go 3rd, just a point off pole-sitters Basildon. Burnham drop to 18th place.

Waltham Forest  1 – 3  Woodford Town (2017)   (2.30pm KO)

Venue: Kitchener Road |    Attendance: 60

The action swiftly moved on to Kitchener Road as Woodford took the points. The visitors led on 36 minutes as Asher Modeste struck before Ethan Kessel [49’] made it two. Forest got a goal back though Joe Creasey [67’] though Town sealed the win through Kessel’s second of the afternoon two minutes later. Woodford stay tenth while Forest drop to the foot of the table.

Basildon Utd   1- 2   Southend Manor

Venue: The Hive    |   Attendance: 127

Onto the 3pm KO’s now and Manor picked up a battling win over table-toppers Basildon at the Hive. Luke Hornsley put the hosts head on 21 minutes, before Jamie Brown levelled three minutes later. The visitors were reduced to ten men though Manor still took the lead through Hamid Zamani [65’] and held on to claim their first win under caretaker boss Adam Peek. Basildon stay top as Takeley were not in action today, while Manor rise to 11th spot.

 

Stansted  1 – 3   Sawbridgeworth Town

Venue: Hargrave Park    | Attendance: 88

Sawbridgeworth produced a good performance to triumph in this local derby at Hargrave Park. The hosts took the lead on eight minutes through Wisley Baltazar though the visitors responded though Lewis Deamer [29’] and after the break sealed the win with goals from Billy Skinner [58’] and Toby Cleaver [75’] to rise to 15th place in the table. Stansted are in 12th place.

 

West Essex  2- 1  Ilford       

Venue: Mayesbrook Park    |   Attendance: 35

The Stags picked up a important win at mayesbrook Park. James Peagram struck 11 minutes in to give the Foxes the lead though Tom Woodbridge levelled ten minutes later. Ilford goalkeeper Chris Clark was dismissed soon afterward. After the break, the hosts made their numerical advantage count as James Bromley [67’] got the winner. West Essex go into 7th place while Ilford stay 9th.

Hackney Wick  1 – 3   Wadham Lodge    (5.30pm KO)

Venue: Old Spotted Dog    |   Attendance: 106

The ‘Ground-Hop Day’ action concluded at the Old Spotted Dog as Hackney Wick fell to defeat against Wadham Lodge. Mario Gnijaj put Wadham ahead on 22 minutes before Dwade James’ spot-kick [29’] doubled that advantage. Ibrahim Camara pulled one back 12 minutes from time for the hosts though James struck again two minutes from time to seal an important win for Marc Farrell’s side and they rise above Wick to 17th in the table. Hackney drop to 19th, two points above bottom side Waltham Forest.

On a nice afternoon at Kitchener Road, Waltham Forest took on Woodford Town in the second match of the designated three with altered kick-offs as part of ‘Ground-Hop Day’. Forest announced this week that they are crowd-funding with the objective of preserving the club beyond this season with the club’s 150th anniversary approaching next term.

In the opening twenty minutes of this encounter, Forest did look the stronger of the two sides with recent signing Chid Okonwai leading the line for the hosts. Twice in the opening half, Okonwai forced visiting stopper Nick Wilson into decent saves. As we headed for the half-hour point, the visitors started to move up a gear with a long-range effort being spilled by Forest goalkeeper Mohammed for a corner. Nine minutes before the break, Woodford took the lead as Mohammed saved a initial shot though the ball fell to forward Asher Modeste who made no mistake.

Half-Time: Waltham Forest 0 – 1 Woodford Town (2017)

The second half began well for the visiting side as they doubled their advantage four minutes in with a powerful drive by forward Ethan Kessel. Forest responded on 67 minutes as two substitutes combined with Daniel Medina’s cross finding Joe Creasey who had a tap-in. The joy for the hosts was short-lived though as Kessel got his second of the afternoon for Woodford just two minutes later to seal the points for Dee Safer’s men.

The match faded somewhat after that though Forest’s Fahad Nazor struck a post with 15 minutes to play and Okonwai couldn’t get his name on the score-sheet as his curling effort went over the bar.

Saturday 14th October

Barkingside  0 – 1    Ilford

Venue: Cricklefield    |   Attendance: 74

Ilford held on to narrowly defeat Cricklefield rivals Barkingside. The only goal of the match came on 68 minutes as forward James Peagram struck to seal the Foxes’ seventh win of the campaign.

Clapton 2 –  0  Great Wakering Rovers

Venue: Old Spotted Dog   |    Attendance: 61

Clapton upset high-flying Great Wakering at the OSD. Two goals after the break by Ikem Odeh [48’] and Jeffrey Cobblah [63’] sealed a good victory for the Tons, their sixth of the league season.

 Hullbridge Sports  3 – 0   Hackney Wick

Venue: Lower Road      |      Attendance: 49

Hullbridge produced a resolute display to overcome Wick at Lower Road. Luca Frankis put the hosts ahead after nine minutes though couldn’t build on that advantage until after the break. Two second-half goals from Ollie Miller [54’ & 90’+3] sealed the points for Rob Hodgson’s men.

Redbridge  3 – 2   Sporting Bengal Utd

Venue: Oakside     |        Attendance: 32

The Motormen overcame a wobble to record another win at Oakside. Winger Reside Coxi-Sebastfao gave the hosts the lead on eleven minutes though Steven Carvell restored parity for Bengal ten minutes later. The visitors broke the deadlock on 27 minutes through Kai Parkinson’s strike. Redbridge fought back late on though as goals from Eljay Worrell [85’] and substitute Calvin Poku [88’] sealed the turnaround for Ricky Eaton & Joey May’s side.

Sawbridgeworth Town  1 – 3    Southend Manor

Venue: Crofters End   |        Attendance: 52

Manor produced another excellent away-day performance to claim an important win at Crofters End. The visitors did the damage in the first half as goals from Ross Johnson [20’], Alfie Lindfield [36’] and Jacob Cleaver [44’] put Stuart Marshall’s side in a great position. Sawbridgeworth did pull one back after the break through Joe Wright.

Stansted     3 – 1    Waltham Forest

Venue: Hargrave Park     |     Attendance: 47

Stansted did the damage early to seal a good win over inconsistent Forest at Hargrave Park. Ryan Ramsey set the Airportmen on their way with the opener on nine minutes before Jevoi Blair made it two after 20 minutes. Ramsey got his second of the afternoon seven minutes later to put Paul Pittuck’s side in a commanding position at the interval. Substitute Marco Faria [68’] got a consolation for the visitors though it was a case of ‘too little, too late’ for them as the hosts recorded their sixth win of the ESL campaign.

Takeley   5 – 4     Enfield 1893

Venue: Station Road      |     Attendance: 61

Takeley got the better of a nine-goal barnstormer at Station Road. A quick-fire double from Mitchell Das [16’] and Freddie Burrell [18’] gave the hosts the initiative though Miguel Lopes De Matos pulled one back four minutes later. Reece Barrett restored Takeley’s two-goal cushion on 29 minutes as his side led at the break 3-1.  De Matos got his second seven minutes after the break and Luke Thomas levelled a pulsating match on 66 minutes. Marc Das’ side were in no mood to be denied though as a double from substitute Will Green [82’ & 90’+3] sealed the win though Ben Bradbury’s strike deep into injury-time ended the scoring.

Tower Hamlets  2 – 2    FC Romania

Venue: Mile End Stadium      |     Attendance: 31

Hamlets came from behind to record a creditable draw at Mile End. FCR had the better of the early-going and capitalised on it as Gabriel Ghinea struck five minutes in. Sergiu Pitaru doubled the lead 19 minutes later. However, two quick-fire goals either side of half-side from Wale Odedoyin [44’ & 46’] ultimately sealed a point for Ade Abayomi & AJ Ashinike’s side.

Wadham Lodge  3 – 3   West Essex

Venue: Kitchener Road           |        Attendance: 16

West Essex’s recent defensive frailties were again highlighted as they were held at Kitchener Road. In a good first-half for the visitors, talismanic striker Michael Mignot [35’ & 40’] put the visitors’ two-up at the interval. Danny Palmer cut the hosts’ arrears in half on 62 minutes. Mignot completed another hat-trick with 15 minutes remaining as West Essex looked set for a good win. Not to be though as goals from Ben McAllister [79’] and Ben Musaka [89’] grabbed a point for the bottom-placed side.

Woodford Town (2017)  3 – 2    Basildon Utd

Venue: Goffs Lane       |     Attendance: 65

Improving Woodford recorded another good win, this time against the Bees at Goffs Lane. Larry Asare gave Town the lead eleven minutes in before Marcus Bowers levelled things eight minutes before half-time. Substitute Ashley Blackburn put the Bees ahead with 22 minutes to play though late goals from Ola Ogunwamide [80’] and Jack Grosvenor [90’] sealed an important home win for Woodford.

Saturday 30th September

Barkingside  1 –  1 Sawbridgeworth Town

Venue: Cricklefield   | Attendance: 48

Barkingside came from behind late-on to hold a determined but depleted Sawbridgeworth side to a draw at Cricklefield. Debutant Billy Skinner put the hosts ahead on the half-hour. Despite increasing pressure from the hosts towards the end of the match, it did look at though Town might have held on although they missed two or three good chances themselves. It wasn’t to be though as substitute Gareth Jones slotted home well to give Michael Walther’s side a point.

Basildon Utd   3 – 0    Tower Hamlets 

Venue: The Hive        |      Attendance: 95

Basildon ended Hamlets’ recent good league run at the Hive. Hot-shot Marcus Bowers did the damage for Marc Harrison’s side as his first-half hat-trick (7’,15’, 35’) sealed the Bees’ seventh win of the season thus far. Hamlets host Ilford on Monday night hoping for a better result.

Great Wakering Rovers    4 – 0     FC Romania

Venue: Burroughs Park      |      Attendance: 63

Wakering produced an excellent display to defeat FCR at Burroughs Park. Hot-shot Neil Richmond scored another super hat-trick (2’4’ and 87’) to set Iain O’Connell’s side on their way. Substitute Stephen Butterworth added the other goal with 13 minutes left.

Hackney Wick   1 – 2    Stansted

Venue: Old Spotted Dog     |        Attendance: 33

Stansted picked up a narrow win at the OSD. Jayden Hocking-Rising got the opener for his new club, while the visitors; winner was a late OG. Robert Gewada got Wick’s reply.

Redbridge  6 – 1     Hullbridge Sports

Venue: Oakside    |        Attendance: 50

Redbridge inflicted a heavy defeat on Hullbridge at Oakside. Brian Moses opened the scoring from the spot on 14 minutes. Lindsipho Mytanda doubled that lead four minutes before defender Jonathan Mbamarah made it three on 31 minutes. Hullbridge pulled one back through youngster Damien Siemienczuk seven minutes after the re-start, though the Motormen more than secured the points with second-half goals from Reside Coxi-Sebastfao (68’), substitute Billy Golledge (82’) and Moses’ second four minutes from time.

Southend Manor   3 – 2     Waltham Forest   

Venue: Southchurch Park      |     Attendance: 56

Manor came back superbly to grab only their second win this term at Southchurch Park. Edgar Morais and Mo Sagaf’s goals put Forest in command though Michael Hopkins pulled one back on 65 minutes before late goals from Alfie Lindfield (86’) and Lee Scott (88’) completed the comeback and the points for Stuart Marshall’s side.

Sporting Bengal Utd  1 – 4  Woodford Town (2017)

Venue: Mile End Stadium           |        Attendance: 30

Woodford upset Bengal with an excellent performance at Mile End Stadium. Larry Asare put the visitors ahead on 17 minutes before Asher Modeste’s goal five minutes before the break doubled the lead. Town made it three thanks to Bradley Kauzani on the hour. Eaia Embalo got one back for Bengal five minutes from time though Andrea Montovani secured the points for the visitors a minute from time.

 Takeley   2 – 0   Clapton   

Venue:  Station Road     |        Attendance: 145

Takeley maintained their 100% record with victory over Clapton at Station Road. Stuart Zanone gave Takeley the lead in first-half stoppage-time before Mitchell Das made it two on the hour.

 Wadham Lodge  1 – 0   Burnham Ramblers

Venue: Kitchener Road     |        Attendance: 14

Wadham edged Burnham to record an important win in this bottom-two clash at Kitchener Road. Ben McAllister got the only goal on 25 minutes to give Wadham their second win of the season which sees them off the foot of the table.

West Essex  2 – 1  Enfield 1893

Venue: Mayesbrook Park    |        Attendance: 24

West Essex kept up their good league form with victory at Mayesbrook Park. Tom MacLeod gave the hosts the lead two minutes after the re-start before Michael Mignot added to his increasing goal-tally this season with the second on the hour. Enfield got a consolation through Ryan Cosson three minutes from time.
