The Non-League journey continued with an interesting & rare Friday night battle at Southchurch Park, which saw Southend Manor host White Ensign in a keenly-contested local derby. Manor were still looking for their first win of the League campaign and that is a task made ever harder but a few squad departures in the last week or so. They fielded young stopper Harry McKie in goal, with a defence of full-backs Ben Sargent & Callum Ferris allied with centre-backs Mitchell Arthur and Keanu Hill. Skipper Daniel Okah was in an anchor midfield ole, along with Ope Mosuro in central midfield. Forwards Ben Allen and Luca Frankis were supported by Kieran James and Lewis Risk. Ensign are still transitioning their squad following their huge rebuild over the summer. Aaron Bloxham fielded Adam Seal in goal, with a defence of Max Drury, Ollie Jenkins & Daniel Monk. Their forward line was led by Tony Jacobs & Charlie Portway, with chief support coming from Billy Bonham-Dare & Owen Dixie.

It would be fair to say that this match did have a rather tepid start, though given the importance on the points on offer here, that was perhaps understandable. However, the game did soon liven up and the pendulum did swing towards Manor after goalkeeper Harry McKie did snuff out a possible chance in the offing as he gathered Ensign midfielder Joe Hunter’s cross into the path of experienced forward Charlie Portway. Manor’s own Luca Frankis also headed narrowly wide of Adam Seal’s goal on the twenty minute mark.

Ensign were starting to put their passing game together, but it was Manor who marginally had the better of the game and they took the lead on 31 minutes. The impressive Kieran James dodged his marker well before taking a turn and fired home past Seal to give James Wakeling’s side a priceless lead.

Ensign roared back though at the other end, and Manor custodian McKie did well to hold his composure as he denied both Owen Dixie and Tony Jacobs in seperate attacks, with both Ensign players only having the stopper to beat. That being said, White Ensign did get their hugely important equaliser two minutes before the break, as full-back Daniel Monk started the move which ended up with forward Billy Bonham-Dare playing Monk in and the defender showed little hesitation to stroke home his low finish into the right corner.

Half-Time: S Manor 1 – 1 White Ensign

The second half was when the said pendulum shifted towards Ensign. Manor found it more difficult to get the ball through the thirds of the pitch, although substitute Jack Unwin did make some good runs and passes. That being said, the frustrations were starting to tell as Ensign’s more experienced players were taking their time and winning fouls and the like to pass the pressure back to the hosts.

The big moment came on sixty-three minutes when Ensign took the lead. A fine cross from the right flank found the head of Charlie Portway and that header was well-directed and found the net, giving McKie little chance. Manor did their utmost to put themselves about to get themselves back into the match but they couldn’t give the ball enough to their biggest outlet in Kieran James and substitute Eamon Payne did his bit to tighten up the visiting backline as well along with Ollie Jenkins.

As the match entered its last fifteen minutes, Ensign poured forward looking for that crucial third goal to diminish any hope for Manor in this contest. Deep into added time, that third goal did come. Two of the substitutes combined as winger Luc Harpon put in a superb cross from the right side which found fellow replacement Jack Allen and his header found the net, which brought wild celebrations from the visiting dug-out.

In summary, Manor started fairly well but as Ensign grew into the match, the home side found it harder to create sustained pressure, particularly after the break. Ensign’s experienced players did make a difference and the longer the second half went on, the more they grew in confidence.

For this match’s stand-out performances, we start with victors Ensign. Forward Billy Bonham-Dare played his part in their forward moves and assisted Daniel Monk for his goal. Monk also had a good game, showing high energy levels, good passing and was up for the battle throughout. Midfielder Ethan Evison again showed why he is an important presence for this Ensign team and a word for Ollie Jenkins as well who steadied his team’s defence well in second half.

For Manor, Kieran James had a really good game and made the most of the half-chance he gad to take his goal well while also showing decent pace and movement. Keanu Hill had a good match in central defence, clearing well when put under pressure. Harry McKie had an excellent match in goal, making two decent saves low down just before Ensign’s equaliser. Lastly, I thought midfielder Lewis Risk had a good game too down the left side, putting together some good passes and showed decent work rate as well.

I’d just like to wish both sides a good remainder of the campaign.

The midweek Non-League matches resumed at the end of August, as Barkingside hosted their second Wednesday home match of the season as they welcomed May & Baker in another Eastern Senior League South tie. The hosts are still under the management of Steve LeSage, and he named Hayden West in goal, with a defence of Jordan Cornelius, Elliot Scott and Josh George. Archie Hammond skippered the side, with the forward line being led by James Ross, supported by Michael James-Akerele & Codey Cosgrave. May & Baker returned to league action after a tough battle with Stotfold in the FA Vase just three days before. Seb Barford was their goalkeeper, with a defence of Cain Brougham, Kunle Adeyemi and centre-backs Toulouwa Dada and captain Jamie Marsh. Remi Awosanya led the forward line, with Jayden Silcott-Brown & Idris Aminu on the flanks.

It was ‘Side who began the match with a flourish and stated their intent in the first minute as skipper Archie Hammond’ strike from a freekick was only narrowly over the crossbar. Visuting custodian Seb Barford was the busier stopper as Bakers just about managed to deal with the impetus and pace from Steven LeSage’s side. There was definitely some pushback from a big penalty decision on 14 minutes as the hosts were awarded a spot-kick. Midfielder Harrison Burke’s penalty was initally saved well by Barford but Burke got onto the rebound to slot home at the second attempt, as the visiting defence were unable to prevent it, much to the ire of Barford.

To be fair to ‘Side, they were having the better of the first half which was tight and more than a little scrappy. Chances were not plentiful either and Bakers were probably grateful to get to the interval with a slim disadvantage, given how little they tested home stopper Hayden West.

Half-Time: Barkingside 1 – 0 May & Baker

Into the second half now, which did liven up somewhat. Bakers were starting to get themselves going towards the hour mark, with Jamie Marsh firing an effort off-target from the edge of the penalty area. On 62 minutes, Barkingside responded as Demi Elegushi’s strike was denied by a decent save from Barford. As we went into the last 25 minutes, Barkingside were defending deeper and deeper in their own half as Bakers maintained the pressure with some decent passing.

With 77 minutes on the clock, Bakers substitute Trevor Harding fizzed a strike narrowly over the goal frame, and Idris Aminu being denied twice in four minutes by ‘Side stopper Hayden West. Moments after fellow substitute Shaun Omogbai’s low effort dribbled agonizingly wide, Bakers finally did make their pressure tell.

Bakers substitute Daniel Barth took full advantage of his marker being unable to clear by firing home a fine strike from inside the area, giving West little chance to deny him as the ball flew high into the net.

To sum up this match, it had glimmers of good play but it didn’t quite find the spark of consistent creativity that said glimmers had perhaps promised, particularly in the first half when the hosts were at their strongest. Bakers definitely had the better of the last 25 minutes though and although they left it late to earn a point, it isn’t a bad result. I suspect boss Jordan Harris will know though that they will need to play better to rack up the wins required in order to reach their target for this term.

There were some good performances from both sides here. For hosts Barkingside, midfielder Harrison Burke looked lively and made some good runs down the middle, as well as some neat passes and got his goal after seeing his spot-kick saved by Barford. Forward James Ross was a good presence too in their forward line, making a welcome return to Football at start of this term. Also, a mention for Codey Cosgrave as well who contributed to his team’s all-round performance, particularly in the first half.

For May & Baker, winger Jayden Silcott-Brown had a good game, testing the Barkingside left side with his quick runs and decent passing. Idris Aminu also had a good game, particularly in the second period when Bakers’ were posing problems and had a couple of decent chances to score himself. Finally, determined centre-back Jamie Marsh was typically resolute defensively as their team gave less oppurtunities away for their opponents to hurt them after the interval.

This may have been a bit of a scrappy game but the food went down well with quite a few of the spectators, which helps when it gets a bit chilly as it did here. I’d like to wish both teams well for the season ahead.

Resilent St Margaretsbury grab 99th minute winner to deny Benfleet at Park Lane

This weekend saw the first visit to Park Lane this term to see Benfleet take on visitors St Margaretsbury, who were bottom of the early standings and obviously keen to push on. Benfleet were looking to find the form which saw them win at Wivenhoe Town last week, rather than the form that saw them lose 1 – 2 to Burnham Ramblers in midweek. The hosts are now managed by Alex Salmon and he named stalwart Florent Gislette in goal, with a backline of Deolindo Lima, Frankie Stone, Martyn Lacey and skipper Cory Rider. Mason Shave and Lee Scott were the chief support to forward Ben Foord, with Henry Sims and Billy Carter among the midfield. St Margaretsbury had Sidi Haidara between the sticks, with a defence of Harry Gilzean, captain Emmanuel Ndukwu, Ethan Daniels and Alffie Campbell. Their front line was led by Gerson Artur and Kamarni Collington, with support from Miles Holding and Kai Daniel.

This match was delayed by 13 minutes because of the match officials being delayed but when we did get underway, both sides had openings to grab that important early goal. For the visitors, both Miles Holding and Kamarni Collington had half-changes but they could not defeat Benfleet custodian Florent Gislette. The hosts had more ball time in the early stages, with their chance eminating from a fine centre by full-back Frankie Stone, which found forward Ben Foord and his flick was well clawed away by St Mags stopper Sidi Haidara.

Benfleet were showing good effort levels but they could not quite craft their favoured passing game, and they had those earlier warnings which was underlined when St Margaretsbury broke the deadlock on 23 minutes. In a congested penalty area, St Mags managed to find Gerson Artur and without hesitation, his well-taken strike beat Gislette on its way to the right corner of the net. Clear-cut chances were not easy to come by but Collington still sent a set-piece narrowly over the woodwork and Mason Shave had a glimpse at goal before his effort was gathered by the visiting goalkeeper Haidara.

St Mags went into the interval with that slender advantage, though they were showing increasing confidence in their defensive abilities, while the ‘Fleet needed to raise their game a notch or two.

Half-Time: Benfleet 0 – 1 St Margaretsbury

Into the second half then and St Mags were continuing to frustrate the home side, though their resolve was commendable given recent results. There was a nervy moment for St Mags, four minutes in as a short pass back to the ‘keeper by defender Alfie Campbell was seized on by Shave, but Haidara denied him again with his feet. Benfleet continued to press for that important leveller, but St Margaretsbury were holding firm.

As we entered the latter stages of this match, the the tension went up a gear as St Mags nearly made the points safe as Campbell’s crisp strike was well parried away by Gislette. Alex Salmon’s side responded immediately at the other end with a fierce strike by Foord being well saved by the impressive Haidara.

We went into added-on time with St Mags still just the one goal ahead but there was two big monents yet to come. First, with six minutes played in added time, Benfleet struck as a set-piece ended up with Deolindo Lima heading on for Foord to get something on the ball to force it over the line, with the diving defender unable to clear the ball off the goalline. Then there was another twist in the tale, as St Mags launched the ball up field on the counter, and Gerson Artur again found himself in on goal and fired home into the left corner to seal the game with pretty much the last kick of the game.

Full-Time: Benfleet 1 – 2 St Margaretsbury

To sum up at times a gritty and scrappy battle, there were a number of occasions where Benfleet threatened to get back in the game though credit has to go to a well-organised St Margaretsbury side, who made it hard to get through their backline. Their young side has seen a lot of change since last term, but joint-managers Paul Holding & Marce Collington will be happy with the resolve shown by their team here. As for the hosts, they couldn’t create enough on a consistent basis and when Foord scored in added-time, they may well have thought they had grabbed a point but the ‘footballing gods’ were not smiling on them today.

There were some good performances from both sides here. For victors St Mags, I felt forward Kamarni Collington really gave his team a good outlet going forward, stretching the home defence with his pace and dribbling. Full-back Harry Gilzean also impressed, showing good defensive awareness in making timely interceptions and playing a few good passes from the back. Forward Gerson Massala Artur took both his goals well wiith well-taken finishes, and a word for goalkeeper Sidi Haidara who made three good saves to keep his team in the game today.

For Benfleet, Frankie Stone had a good game at left-back, putting in several important crosses to keep the visiting defence alert. Forward Ben Foord showed his usual tireless running and took his goal well in a crowded penalty area. Mason Shave also made some decent runs but ultimately couldn’t get into faultless striking positions, while centre-back Martyn Lacey also showed good composure and positioning to deny the visitors more runs on goal.

Congrats to St Mags on their win & I’d like to wish both teams well for the season ahead.

Last-gasp winner sends Manor through to the Prelim Round of FA Cup

The new season’s FA Cup roared back into being this weekend with former Essex Senior side Cockfosters (now part of the Spartan South Midlands Premier) travelling to face Southend Manor, who are still among the ESL ranks. This Extra Prelim Round tie had Manor field Luca Collins in goal, with a central defensive three of Montel Shonubi, skipper Daniel Okah and Ope Mosuro, with Josh Devlin and Finlay Gregory in central midfield. Ben Allen and Ayo Awosika were the chief support for forward Robbie Farrell. Cockfosters had Charlie Mann in goal, with a defence of Kenny Norbrega, Prince Madu, Nick Barrett and Aiden Read. Skipper Matt Thomson was alongside Joe Entwistle in central midfield. Recent signings Jervon Campbell and Chikosi Basden joined stalwart forward George Beattie in attack.

This match took a little while to get going, as it was quite cagey from the get-go. Manor had early chances as Robbie Farrell and Ben Allen had early glimmers at goal, while at the other end, ‘Fosters winger Jervon Campbell was a good outlet on the right flank, using his pace to get past the Manor defence. Campbell also sent in a good cross from the right channel which Manor skipper Daniel Okah did well to clear.

Both sides were competing well, although the visitors were slightly more adept at retaining possession, however they couldn’t quite create the chances they would have liked, and their threat mostly came from set-pieces throughout the first half. Midway through the half, there was a good bit of awareness by Manor centre-back Ope Mosuro who sent in a lob which only just cleared visiting custodian Charlie Mann’s crossbar.

With half-time rapidly approaching, Mann was called into action as a fierce strike by Farrell needed a superb save by the Cockfosters goalkeeper to claw the ball away from going in the top right corner of the net. The visitors responded as midfielder Joe Entwistle send in a deft lob which was narrowly off-target, with home stopper Luca Collins being watchful.

Half-Time: Manor 0 – 0 Cockfosters

The second half began with the level of tension rising, as it became increasingly likely that this was going to be one tight Cup tie. Manor had a setback just short of the hour mark, with Mosuro receiving his second booking for holding an opponent. Even though they had the numerical advantage, ‘Fosters still could not create the sheer number of chances to really put their hosts under sustained pressure.

There was a big moment for the visitors on 78 minutes. Visiting forward George Beattie did really well to get past his marker on the left side of the penalty area, but his low strike trickled agonizingly wide of Collins’ right-side post. Manor also had a chance with four minutes remaining, which saw Ben Allen send a header straight at Mann when well-placed to score.

Added time was a tale of two big chances. Firstly on 92 minutes, a fine angled corner by Thomson found the head of full-back Prince Madu but his header was centimetres over Collins’ crossbar. Barely a minute later, the hosts delivered a powerful reply on the counter-attack as after a fine surging run through the middle by Farrell, he had the presence of mind to find substitute Kai Haysman who displayed composure to get past his marker and strike the ball into the right-side corner, past Mann and before the defenders could get back to the goal-line to block. Haysman’s goal was well-taken and the jubilation of his team-mates and the home crowd was palpable.

Full-Time: Southend Manor 1 – 0 Cockfosters

In summary, this was a competitive match although the decent crowd in attendance did have to be patient for the chances to crop up, for either side. ‘Fosters will be disappointed that they couldn’t create enough chances, particularly when they had the numerical advantage for about half hour of this tie. Manor will play better than this but you also have to respect the steel & the feel-good factor they have and boss James Wakeling and his staff have to take their share of credit for that.

There were some good performances as ever. For Manor, forwards Ben Allen and Robbie Farrell were tenacious and full of running, with Allen doing well to give his team an option and also tracked back well defensively. Farrell brought a superb save out of vising stopper Charlie Mann, right on half-time before in added-time, making the fine surging run that led to Haysman’s winning goal. Centre-back Montel Shonubi had a good afternoon, making several important interceptions to stifle Cockfosters’ enterprising approach play at times while I thought Josh Devlin also put in an all-action performance to keep things tight too.

For Cockfosters, winger Jervon Campbell was their stand-out attacking threat for large parts of the game, getting space on the right flank and put in some good crosses as well. Nick Barrett did well at the centre of their defence too, making several good aerial clearances, while Joe Entwistle had another good game in central midfield. Finally, a word for Charlie Mann who made a few smart saves to deny most of the few chances that the hosts had.

Manor have won £1,125 in prize money with this win (Source: The FA website) and will entertain Shefford Town & Campton in the Prelim Round. Congrats to them and best wishes to Cockfosters for rest of their campaign.

Essex Senior League – Premier Division

On Thursday night, the re-arranged game between Hoddesdon Town and Stansted at Lowfield ended in a 2 – 1 victory for the Lilywhites. Larry Asare-Bediako gave them a first-minute lead, before Harry Andic netted a second goal just after the half-hour. Billy Coyne’s reply by way of a penalty six minutes before the break didn’t do enough to reverse the Airportmen’s fortunes here and further dimmed their play-off spot chances.

On Good Friday, Redbridge also had a dramatic game as they were held 1 – 1 by Little Oakley at Oakside. Michael Pindy put the Motormen ahead after three minutes to give them a dream start. However, profligate finishing scuppered their chances of making the points safe, allowing Oakley to stay in the game and a Harry Mann spot-kick was enough to give a depleted Oakley side a point.

On Friday night, Woodford Town‘s last home game of the season ended in a 1 – 1 draw with Cockfosters. Both goals came late on, with Montel McKenzie putting Shane Baptiste’s side ahead on 81 minutes, only for substitute Bailey Stevenson levelling the game deep in added time with a fine volley. Cockfosters still remain in the top ten and have a Errington Cup Semi-Final at Enfield in midweek. Onto the five matches on Saturday now, start with Saffron Walden Town‘s priceless 2 – 0 triumph over strugglers Sawbridgeworth Town. Khris Oti and Gavin Cockman got the goals as Walden almost mathematically secured the second-place they have sought after. A crowd of 457 watched on at Catons Lane and they are unbeaten in their last 11 matches – some run that is at a crucial time. Sawbo have to win at home to West Essex next weekend and hope St Margaretsbury fail to win at Redbridge or they will be in the lottery of the relegation/promotion play-off between a Step 5 & 6 side as I understand it.

Elsewhere, Stansted kept up their very slim hopes of that second spot with a 2 – 0 victory at home to White Ensign at Hargrave Park. Michael Salako [49 & 82′] notched a double here to reach 20 league goals this campaign, congrats to him on another fine season. A win for Ensign at Enfield next Saturday evening will confirm a top-ten spot in their first term at Step 5. Also, Enfield conclusively won 4 – 1 at Clapton, with Samrai Gebrai notching a fine treble and Jack Grosvenor also on target midway in the second half. Ryan Ferrari got a consolation for the Tons as they still need a point to vanquish any mathematical chance of finishing in the bottom three.

FC Clacton got a 1 – 0 victory over Athletic Newham at the Rush Green Bowl, with Jamie Bennett the goal-scorer there. the Seasiders go above Newham in the standings into seventh and could still finish in the top eight which would a super achievement. Finally, Hoddesdon Town drew 0 – 0 with Ilford at Lowfield which means both sides will finish the bottom half this term. A good point though for the Foxes in boss Adam Peek’s penultimate game in charge.

The Easter weekend continued with a trip back to Leslie Field for a real crunch match in the play-off race as Burnham Ramblers entertained Harwich & Parkeston. It’s always good to visit this historic ground and it was also a rare opportunity to see the North East Essex side as well. Burnham realistically had to win to stay in contention for a play-off spot but Harwich had been improving of late. As for the teams then and Burnham fielded Adam French in goal once again, with a back four of Nathan Putt, Albert Galbally and centre-backs Matthew Stevens-Brown and Ben Wood, who skippered the side. Adebolu Adeyemi played in a deeper role here, supporting forwards Samir Ali, George Hart and Haziz Kone. Options on the bench included forwards Said Issa, Deane Stone and Jack Walker. Harwich named Jack Lines as their goalkeeper here, with a defence comprised of Alfred Smith, Reece Harte with captain Nathan Kioussis alongside Jack Wood in central defence. Their attack was led by Joe Boreham-Knight and Jamie Eades. Their depleted bench included Cameron Brunsden, Jay Eggerichs and Tony Clarke.

This match got underway with the palpable sense that Harwich felt more comfortable in possession, and Burnham were feeling the nerves as they knew a strong result was key here. Samir Ali and Adebolu Adeyemi both had glimpses at visiting custodian Jack Lines’ goal frame but they couldn’t test the ‘keeper. Harwich were starting to create problems at the other end, as a set-piece by midfielder Brandon Rusby found commanding centre-back Jack Wood but his header was well parried away by home goalkeeper Adam French. Ramblers had a good chance just short of the half-hour as a move instigated by Haziz Kone down the left flank ended with his pass finding fellow forward George Hart and his effort was well-blocked in a congested penalty area by Harwich full-back Alfred Smith.

Burnham were creating a few nervous moments with their angled crosses in from deep but chances on goal were still few & far between, much to their growing frustration. The scale of the task grew ever higher as Harwich did break the deadlock seven minutes before the break. Harwich forward Joe Boreham-Knight made another telling run and his effort on goal evaded the home defenders which allowed Declan Kama to nip in and slot home from mere yards out, at the far post. Game on for Luke Goodson’s side. The Shrimpers nearly got a second goal as a speculative lobbed effort by Boreham-Knight went wide of French’s goal. You got the sense that Burnham were happy to not concede any more goals and needed some inspiration to rejuvenate their performance and possibly their season after the interval.

Half-Time: Burnham Ramblers 0 – 1 Harwich & Parkeston

The second half got underway as Burnham signalled their intent to resurrect their chances of the play-offs by getting back on terms. However, it was Harwich who were continuing to stretch the hosts’ defence, as Boreham-Knight again got past the backline after an errant pass by skipper Ben Wood was claimed. The forward then again sent a long pass into the far post area, agonizingly wide of strike partner Jamie Eades’ grasp as the ball trickled away, much to French’s relief. Another omen of it not being Burnham’s day came on seventy-five minutes as midfielder Levi Griffiths was given a straight red card for a high foot which did clatter into substitute Jay Eggerichs, who had to be substituted 15 minutes after coming on.

Harwich were sensing that they could wrap the points up and Kama’s strike was well-cleared off the goal line by Burnham captain Ben Wood. Burnham rallied and substitutes Jack Walker and Deane Stone did give them a little more impetus in the latter stages, with Stone breaking through the Harwich defence well before sending a well-struck effort wide of Line’s woodwork.

Despite showing good work rate, the hosts could not get the key passes into the forwards often enough for their liking really and Harwich sealed the win on eighty-nine minutes. A fine cross by midfielder Steven Polley found Boreham-Knight who controlled his header well as it flew into the far corner with French stranded. Burnham were awarded a spot-kick deep into added-time after Adeyemi was felled inside the area, which Samir Ali did convert with aplomb but it was not enough to prevent falling to a demoralising loss here and Ramblers simply have to win at Cornard Utd on the last day and hope Halstead lose at home to mid-table Coggeshall Utd.

Full-Time: Burnham Ramblers 1 – 2 Harwich & Parkeston

In summary, Burnham could not conjure up a performance they needed to win the game. It may well been nerves and/or the pressure of needing the points today but that’s not really for me to say. Take nothing away from Harwich though as they put in a very good display, with strong performances all over the pitch, good movement and passing and a resolute defence as well to earn the points.

There were several creditable performances in this match. For victors Harwich, forward Joe Boreham-Knight led the attack well and also took his goal with aplomb. He gave the Burnham defence a tough afternoon, especially when the hosts had to push forward in the second half to get back into the game. Also, centre-back Jack Wood was a aerial threat in both boxes and could have two goals from set-pieces. Full-back Alfred Smith had a good match as well, showing good positional awareness in his defensive responsibilities and good work rate plus winger Declan Kama also took his goal well and showed decent movement off-the-ball.

For Burnham, Adebolu Adeyemi did well in his position supporting the forwards, threading in some good passes and gave everything for his team in terms of work rate. Centre-back Matthew Stevens-Brown put in some fine tackles as well to keep his side competitive and full-back Nathan Putt also showed good energy and passing. Finally, forward Samir Ali did all he could to get his team going and made some decent runs and showed good movement too.

I’d like to wish both sides well for their respective final match on Easter Monday and wish them well going into next season. Also, a big thanks to Burnham for their hospitality, it’s been really good to see the club as a whole on an upward curve this term.

The first match of the Easter weekend saw the hectic end of the season continue with a trip back to Oakside to see a critical mach in the fortunes of the Motormen as they entertained a robust & impressive Oakley side who are still after a top-six finish. George Christou’s hosts also had to think about their Peter Butcher Trophy Final on Easter Monday and fielded George Martin in goal, with a back four in front of him of Bradley Bennett, skipper Jack Roult and centre-backs Nathan Okoye and Joe Elliott. The forward line here was led by Ibrahim Kehinde, Tim Ogunrinde and Michael Pindy. Options from the sidelines included forwards Loui Hazelwood and Tony Martin. Matt Carmichael’s Acorns recently opened their new stand at their Memorial ground celebrating a fan who has supported them for seven decades in Gordon Carter. Their side here included stopper Daniel Joyce, Hayden Dutch and Will Crissell as their central defence, Ekow Owusu-Boakye and Bradley James in central midfield, with top-scorer Harry Mann leading the forward line alongside Sam Cooke. Their depleted bench was comprised of forwards Greg Rodger & Danny Garrad, alongside Tyler Sullivan.

This match really broke into life early-doors as Redbridge not only threatened visiting custodian Daniel Joyce’s goal but also scored after just three minutes. A characteristic fast forward move allowed Tim Ogunrinde a strike at goal which was parried by Joyce, but the Oakley stopper couldn’t gather and Michael Pindy followed up, pinching the ball off skipper Edward Nobbs’ toes and Pindy duly slotted home low into the net without any further invitation. It was a setback for Oakley, who have made some reputation this season for being tough to break down and bypass. In the next phase of the game though, it was less happiness and more frustration for the team in blue though as they struck the woodwork twice before the half-hour arrived.

First, Ogunrinde’s fine strike nearly bypassed Joyce but not the goal frame and soon after, midfielder Jack Chawner’s well-struck free-kick also thundered off the woodwork with Oakley counting their luck and Redbridge cursing their luck. As they have in several matches this term, the duo of Ibrahim Kehinde & Michael Pindy really orchestrated the home side’s forward line, with Pindy showing excellent movement and no lack of pace either. Kehinde also showcased his pace and technique as well. Oakley did have a half-chance about ten minutes before the break as defender Will Crissell connected with a deep free-kick and the ball trickled wide, thankfully for Motormen goalkeeper George Martin.

Redbridge had one more chance at goal before the break but Kehinde couldn’t find the target as his shot drifted wide. All in all, the hosts should really have been two or three goals ahead at the break, but you know what they say about ‘having to take your chances’. That particular cliché would be further evidenced here but more on that later.

Looking back, Oakley did gradually get themselves back into the running in the match, helped by the ‘midfield engine room’ of Ekow Owusu-Boakye and Bradley James plus the willing runner in forward Harry Mann. Moments on goal were less frequent, as the battle for midfield superiority replaced that to an extent. Oakley had to manage for ten minutes with ten men after Mason Lumley’s sin-bin just shy of the hour but substitute Danny Garrad did give them more impetus in the last fifteen minutes.

Frustratingly for the hosts, their early promise was being overtaken by tired legs and it highlighted how important chances were again just shy of seventy minutes when another set-piece by Chawner from nearly the half-way line also cannoned off the crossbar thanks to a one-handed save by Joyce. Centre-back Nathan Okoye’s effort was also denied by Joyce as Oakley were given some reason for optimism. The other thing the Acorns have been known for doing this season is staying in games and their belief has probably earned them a few points as well. It was Redbridge’s turn for a let-off with ten minutes remaining as Harry Mann fired well over when well-placed after good work by Garrad, but the assistant referee did put up his flag.

With mere moments remaining and despite Oakley not really creating a lot of chances at Martin’s goal, they did get a equaliser on eighty-nine minutes. A foul in a congested box by Okoye allowed Mann to step up and confidently fire home a fine spot-kick into left corner, away from Martin’s grasp – this was also Mann’s 20th league goal this term. And with little time left to conjure up a key second goal, it was the clock that won the day as Oakley left with a point & relatively happy with their afternoon’s work. The same certainly couldn’t be said for the hosts as desolation took hold after the final whistle and those earlier missed chances had come back to bite.

Redbridge now have to focus on the Peter Butcher Trophy final and hope that Sawbridgeworth stifle Saffron Walden’s charge to second spot on Saturday (16 April).

Full-Time: Redbridge 1 – 1 Little Oakley

In summary, Redbridge should really have been two or three goals up as I said at the interval, but profligate finishing and decent defending by Oakley kept it to one goal. The Acorns would probably have wanted to have played better but their resolute belief will carry them well, looking at next season. It is some ways a credit to the high bar that both teams have set for themselves this term and that has to be recognised.

There were several good performances from both sides in this match. For Redbridge, forwards Michael Pindy and Ibrahim Kehinde really gave the Oakley backline a hard afternoon, particularly in the first half with their pace, movement and passing. Centre-back Joe Elliott made several key interceptions and added to a good performance from his team’s back five while Jerold Cobblah impressed in central midfield with a high work rate and some good passes too. For Oakley, forward Harry Mann was as ever a good presence in attack, despite little in the way of service at times from his team-mates, but Mann did make several good runs in the channels. Mdfielder Ekow Owusu-Boakye put in a good display with a good work rate as well and good tackles, while defenders Ed Nobbs and Rory Harman also put in decent displays as well.

Essex Senior League Round-up- Sat 9 April

The match with the most significance at the top was Saffron Walden Town’s 2 – 1 win at Little Oakley. Daniel Rowe had given Matt Carmichael’s team a first-half lead but Walden’s form has been strong of late and they showed this once again through strikes by Gavin Cockman and teenager Stanley Leech. The win puts Walden in prime position for the promotion play-off place, with matches against Sawbridgeworth and Hoddesdon to come, crucially both at Catons Lane. Oakley’s season still looks very positive overall and they will be looking to secure a top-six finish. Elsewhere, Redbridge got a good 3 – 1 home win over Stanway Rovers at Oakside, in a match delayed for nearly two hours as Rovers were caught in traffic chaos en route. Stanway did take the lead early in the second half through Danny Nesbitt, but a brace for Loui Hazlewood and a late goal from Michael Pindy secured the comeback win and keep George Christou’s side in contention for that much-wanted second spot.

Stansted also have a slim chance of pinching that spot after a 2 – 1 win over Southend Manor at Hargrave Park, thanks to goals from Jack Mitchell and Michael Salako. Manor had an unfortunate OG to assist their way back into the game but other results mean they are now safe from relegation, and credit has to go to boss James Wakeling and his coaching team. The Airportmen meanwhile have four matches left, and arguably have to win all four to leapfrog their rivals. Athletic Newham’s season is coming to a stuttering end as they were held by top-six rivals Enfield at Terry Mac. Kieran Bishop’s goal had given the E’s a first-half lead, but Daniel Izekor got a good equaliser with about ten minutes left. The result means Enfield remain six points clear of Newham, though Chris Davis’ side also have four matches to play (in the next fortnight). Also, FC Clacton are also finishing the season well as they got a 4 – 0 triumph over Clapton at Rush Green Bowl. A double for Mekhi McKenzie, plus goals by Elias Ahmed and Harry McDonald saw Tom Austin’s side to a fine win and they rose to eighth spot because of it. The Tons debatably need a point or two to make sure of their ESL place next term.

That is the case due to Sawbridgeworth Town’s hugely important 2 – 1 win over Errington Cup Finalists Cockfosters at Crofters. James Falaise and Morgan Arnold got the big goals for Alex Salmon and Kieran Amos’ side, with Bailey Stevenson responding for Gavin Kelsey’s team. ‘Fosters drop down to tenth but they still have 3 games left. Sawbo’s assignment is clear – they need at least one win from matches against Saffron Walden and West Essex to evade the bottom two. Meanwhile, Takeley continued their mini-revival with a 4 – 1 success over Sporting Bengal Utd at Station Road. The ensemble cast of Elliott Long, Glenn O’Hanlon, George Frodsham and Traevon Williams-Lauder all netted for Marc Das’ side to take them up to 11th spot. Bengal ended their campaign here and responded via an OG in this match but there will be a lot of soul-searching in the close season to come whilst they find out which division they will be placed in Step 6 following relegation.

The remaining Saturday game to note saw Hoddesdon Town claim a good 2 – 0 victory over champions Walthamstow. Terrell Sterling and Harrison Rookard both struck to give Simon Riddle’s team the points which takes them up to 50 points for the season. ‘Stow can still hit 90 points this term, even with a draw in their final game on April 23rd. On Friday night, West Essex got a 2 – 1 win over Ilford at Wadham Lodge, with Cameron Gray and Reece Clarke’s spot-kick enough to overhaul Jordan Fisher’s reply for the Foxes. West remain 13th after the weekend’s action, while Ilford stay 16th. Also, Woodford Town were held to a goalless draw by St Margaretsbury at Ashton’s, which kept Town in 14th but St Mags stay third-bottom, a point clear of Sawbo but with only one match left – at Redbridge on the final day of the league season.

The first midweek match in April saw a return to Cricklefield for this Eastern Senior League South match which saw play-off chasing Burnham Ramblers visit to face Barkingside. The hosts are hoping for a top-ten finisdh but the main thing they needed is impetus ahead of next season. The hosts fielded Duncan Smith in goal, with a defence of captain Jordan Cornelius, Joseph Lanes, Kevin Difika and Nathan Saunders. As ever, James Peagram was the focal point in attack for ‘Side, with support from Josh Duyile, Quincy Warner and Umaru Kabia. Options from the sidelines inluded midfielders David Etcheri and Ismael Dahjaoul and forward Anton Alexander. Burnham have the hallmarks of a united squad which is good to see, they had Adam French in goal, with a back four of Nathan Putt, Albert Galbally plus centre-backs Tom Howard and skipper Ben Wood. Eddie Appleton and Joe Howard were in centtral midfield, Haziz Kone and Samir Ali were the chief support to forwards Adebolu Adeyemi and Jack Walker. Their substitutes included centre-back Ben Jackman, midfielders Harry Shawyer, Liam Barry and George Hart plus Said Issa.

It would be fair to say that the match did take a little while to find its rhythm. The first chance of note saw a good run by Burnham winger Samir Ali down the right flank end with a good cross which found forward Jack Walker but the latter’s header was off-target which didn’t trouble home custodian Duncan Smith. The visitors were having most of the play and the better of the few chances we saw in the half, with wingers Ali and Haziz Kone both testing their markers well. With the half-hour approaching, a good move involving Kone and energetic full-back Albert Galbally found Walker but again he couldn’t test Smith.

The good crowd in attendance (including several from the visitors, which was reassuring to see) did see a goal on 31 minutes and another darting run by the impressive Haziz Kone broke past ‘Side’s backline and slotted home low past Smith with no trouble. The hosts were having some decent approach plkay, largely through the likes of Umaru Kabia’s good runs down the right channel and James Peagram once again leading the line, although the Ramblers defence was being miserly and cleared well for the most part.

Half-Time: Barkingside 0 – 1 Burnham Ramblers

Two minutes after the restart, a rare defensive error by Barkingside’s Kevin Difika allowed Ramblers midfielder George Hart to get on the ball and his strike went wide but it showed that Luke Goodson’s side were keen to build momentum and take the points here as quickly as they could. Forward Adebolu Adeyemi also put in some testing crosses which the hosts did well to clear. A rare chance for Barkingside came on 53 minutes as midfielder Archie Hammond garnered some space down the centre but his effort went over Adam French’s woodwork.

Perhaps sensing their lead at this point was slender, Burnham pushed forward again just after the hour mark and got that telling second goal. Kone again made another good run which couldn’t be stopped, with Kone unleashing a fierce strike which was well palmed away by Smith, but unfortunately for the hosts, Samir Ali got in first to help himself to a close range tap-in.

There was no doubting Barkingside’s work rate and they nearly got an important goal back as a fine ball in by substitute David Etcheri just evaded Kabia in the eighteen-yard area. The points were made secure though for the visitors eight minutes from time as Adeyemi fired home a good low strike from a narrow angle at the far post which bypassed Smith and found the net.

In fairness, Burnham did more than deserve the win and showed why they are the fourth highest scorers in the division this season. They have a big match at rivals Halstead Town at the weekend, which could pretty secure the play-off berth they will be looking for.

Full-Time: Barkingside 0 – 3 Burnham Ramblers

This match can be summed up by Burnham having more options in their team and they have goals throughout their forward line and they showed that once again here. Barkingside have a decent backline, and decent build-up play but their main problem is scoring goals on a consistent basis. James Peagram has 19 league goals this term which is commendable, but he is well ahead of next lead goal-scorer for his team. Burnham also have a robust defence who did have a few nervy moments, but they were not heavily troubled in this game.

There were some fine performances in this match. First, for winners Burnham I felt winger Haziz Kone had a very good match, showing time & again his pace and crossing ability to really test the home backline. Fellow winger Samir Ali once again showed his credentials as well and his goal was an oppurtunistic one. Forward Adebolu Adeyemi also added further goal threat and took his goal well late on as well as good passes from deep at times. Finally, a word for full-back Albert Galbally, who typified his team’s defence with a robust performance and also sowed good energy and a good outlet for his team.

For Barkingside , winger Umaru Kabia was a good outlet down the right flank for the hosts, making several good runs and showed decent work rate along with it. In central defence, Nathan Saunders made several good interceptions and good positioning to keep proceedings tight, particularly in the first half. Josh Duyile added to his side’s forward moves showing good trickery, pace and movement while full-back Jordan Cornelius also had a decent match at full-back.

Ensign edge to comeback win in terrific contest at Burroughs Park

The match on this year’s “Non-League Day” was a local trip to Burroughs Park for White Ensign’s last home game of the Essex Senior campaign as they welcomed FC Clacton. Both sides are seeking to claim a top-ten finish to round a throughly good campaign for both teams. Ensign had Louis Hawes in goal once again, with a back four of Thando Moyo, Charlie Adams, Carl Conway and skipper Jake McWee. Their forward line was led by George O’Connor and Luke Woodward, with support from Teddy Henderson and Jason Reynolds-Blanche. On the bench were good options in forwards Shemarie Perkins, Jake Chaplin and Emanuel Abudiore plus Courtney Justin and midfielder Reece Sayers. Clacton had Luke Avenell between the posts here, with a backline comprised of Kyle Ferguson, Teddy Collis plus centre-backs Michael Okafor and Adam Tilson. Jett Hogan and Jamie Bennett were in central midfield, with Mekhi McKenzie leading the forward line for Tom Austin’s side. Options from the sidelines included full- back Jenson Mulqueen and forward Elias Ahmed.

This game really sprung into life early on as Clacton forward Charlie Collis’effort was well parried over the woodwork by Ensign custodian Louis Hawes in the first minute. That was a let-off for the home side but they really punished their opposition as they took the lead on four minutes. From a set-piece, the ball was fed into midfielder Ethan Evison’s crisp strike beat visiting goalkeeper Luke Avenell at his near post.

Collis was proving a thorn in the home defence’s side with fine energetic runs and on thirteen minutes, home co-boss Jack Maleary in the dugout wouldve been glad to see another effort from the forward deflected, thus giving Hawes a chance to get across and gather. At the other end, forwards Luke Woodward and Teddy Henderson were utilising their pace and strength to keep Clacton central defenders Michael Okafor and Adam Tilson alert, with Okafor a towering presence in the air. Indeed, Clacton did get a deserved leveller on 21 minutes through a fine rapid move which ended with captain Billy Wales sweeping home a lofted finish into the net, giving Hawes little oppurtunity to deny him.

Clacton were continuing to look efficent and fast going forward, but they were also prone to the occasional moment of poor concentration in defence. One such moment happened allowed Henderson to get in on goal but his strike lacked the power to beat Avenell, who was relieved to claim the ball. The hosts also had a bit of fortune just past the half-hour as midfielder Jett Hogan stole in at the back post but his strike wasn’t enough to bypass Hawes.

Tom Austin’s team finished the half well and made it count as Collis finished a flowing move with a precise finish low into the right corner. They had edged the matxh at that point but the manner and timing of the goal would have delighted Austin and his assistant Ryan Salter, who are clear in the standards they seek to maintain in their team.

Half-Time: Ensign 1 – 2 Clacton

The second half was delayed in getting underway by a half-hour while attending paramedics dealt with a medical emergency after a spectator was taken ill. I would like to wish them a swift recovery.

Back to the match, and crikey it really was worth waiting for. The visitors again looked to use their guile to create chances and a quickly-taken goal kick up field by Avenell caught the home defence cold, allowing the onrushing Wales in on goal though Hawes again did well to deny him. Ensign got themselves back level as a fine centre from the right side by Jason Reynolds-Blanche found substitute Emanuel Abudiore who evaded the Clacton backline and slotted home calmly.

White Ensign were arguably having their best spell of the match at this point, with forward George O’Connor showing desire, strength and good pace as well and that was evident as he outpaced Okafor but with only Avenell to get past, his low strike sailed agonizingly wide of the right-side post. The home side did wrestle the lead back on 69 minutes from the penalty spot, with another Reynolds-Blanche cross causing problems, and referee Benjamin Horne adjudged the ball struck a hand. Reynolds-Blanche stepped up to duly convert the kick from twelve yards.

It has to be said that both teams were really going for the win, with forward Jordan Lartey heading narrowly over the woodwork, from a good cross from Wales on the left flank. Both teams were also understandably tiring, but Clacton crucially get a dramatic leveller in added-time. From another set-piece, centre-back Adam Tilson swept home with all the poise of a striker from about 15 yards out in a congested penalty area.

You could be forgiven for thinking ‘that was it’ but although both teams did not deserve to lose the match really, it was Ensign who were smiling at the final whistle. There was another foul seen in the 18-yard box which saw full-back Teddy Collis sent off for his second yellow card. Replacement Reece Sayers stood up to take the penalty and it was confidently dispatched, much to the delight of his team-mates.

Full-Time: White Ensign 4 – 3 FC Clacton

This is a hard match to summarise. Clacton edged the first half and their forward line was more efficent and more likely to score but they switched off as a unit in defence too often in the second half though Ensign still needed to show their famed spirit to get back in the game. Even with that, it was a tough result for the Seasiders to take as no-one deserved to lose it. Both teams deserve to be commended for the enthralling game they put on here.

There were terrific performances by many players in this game. For Ensign, I thought George O’Connor had a terrific match today. The forward showed strength, pace and desire and really gave the visiting defence a hard afternoon as the natch went on, also linking up well with Luke Woodward in attack. Jason Reynolds-Blanche also had a fine game, providing good crosses from the flanks and got a decent assist too. Lastly, Carl Conway put in a good shift at centre-back, making several important clearances and goalkeeper Louis Hawes also made some important saves earlier in the game to keep his side in it earlier in the match.

For Clacton, forward Charlie Collis had a great match here, showing work rate, pace and good passing as well as taking his goal very well. Fellow forward Mekhi McKenzie led the line very well also, showing good hold-up play, good awareness and movement. Centre-back Michael Okafor barely lost a challenge in the air all game and aided his defence well with good awareness too. Finally, midfielder Jett Hogan put in string display, making several important interceptions and passing in both halves on the pitch.

I’d just like to wish both sides good final weeks of the campaign.
