Hello and welcome to this week’s Essex Olympian League preview, looking at the action from the top tier all the way to from Senior Division Five, with a look at results in Cup action too.

EOFL Premier Division

Friday 1st November – Catholic Utd  2 – 0  Shenfield AFC  | The Len Salmon [3G]

The action in the Premier Division started on Friday night as Catholic Utd defeated Shenfield AFC 2 – 0 at the Len Salmon. Aaron Baldwin and Simon Thomas got the crucial goals as the Super Hoops rise to eighth spot.

Saturday 2nd November

Onto the Saturday action now in the top-tier, as three matches survived the deluge of rain across the county. First, Buckhurst Hill demolished struggling Harold Wood Athletic 7 – 0 at Roding Valley School’s 3G pitch. Suley Zuhdu led the way once again with a treble, while Nathan Sollosi also nabbed two goals, with Josh Banfield and Daniel Whitehead also notching in this thumping win which took Hill up to fourth spot. Ath succumbed to their third loss in a row, and drop to second-bottom. Hutton got only their second league win this term with a 2 – 1 triumph over Leigh Ramblers at Polo Fields. Joshua Bardouleau and Will Marlowe both struck to end the Rams’ four-match unbeaten streak. Also, Canning Town defeated 10-man Rayleigh Town 3 – 2 in Beckton.

Matches Postponed: Basildon Town  P – P  Kelvedon Hatch  | Basildon Sports Club

Old Southendian  P – P  Sungate   | Garon Park

EOFL Senior League Cup (1.30pm KOs)

In the two Senior Cup matches this weekend, both home sides progressed. Leigh Town sent fellow Senior Two side Laindon Orient out as Town won 4 – 1. Conor Cobb struck early for the visitors though goals from Sam Irvine, Sam Gillmore, Tom Byford and Max Jones saw to it that Leigh went through to the next round. Springfield join them there after overwhelming AS Rawreth 5 – 0 at Springfield Hall Park. Nav Arain, Ryan Culleton, Jack Mundy, Dave Wareham were all on the score-sheet, with Ryan Batchford also netting from 12 yards.

Essex Premier Cup  Result

Runwell Sports  2 – 1  Clapton CFC  | St Luke’s Park, Runwell

EOFL Senior Division One

In Senior One, three matches also survived the dreary weather. Chingford Athletic secured a narrow 1 – 0 win over Galleywood at Town Mead [3G]. Alex Gordon got the only goal in that one to give Ath, who lead the standings by two points now, their sixth win in their seven league matches so far. Manford Way had a brace from Joe Lovell to thank for a 2 – 1 away win at Shoebury Town. Also, Old Chelmsfordians picked up an impressive 3 – 1 win at Lakeside to leap up to fourth.

Matches Postponed: Rayleigh Town Res  P – P  Toby  | London Road

Snaresbrook  P – P  Herongate Athletic   | Nutters Field

Senior Division Two

Now moving into Olympian Senior Two and Epping Town had to come from behind to draw 1 – 1 at home against tough opposition in Old Southendian Res. Dave Stubbs got the goal for OS before Joe Thomas got a late leveller for Billy Cove’s side. Wakering Sports got their first win of the season with a thumping 5 – 1 home win over Rochford Town. Russell Beck hit a brace with Ben Burrows, Ryan Gregory & Ben Rowe also on target for the Shoebury-based side. Tommy Dominguez got a mere consolation goal for Town, who are regrettably finding wins hard to come by this term. Also, Corinthians defeated Ryan 4 – 0 in Stambridge. Jake Hodder struck twice, with Luke Owen also notching alongside an own goal as Chris Stoneham’s went back to the summit, a point clear of Beacon Hill Rovers who won 4 – 1 against May & Baker Res. Adebolu Adeyemi continued his stellar scoring run with a brace here, with Stephen Bennett and Josh Perry also on target here for Rovers. Substitute Lanre Sodeinde got Bakers goal though they have lost three in-a-row now, sitting in mid-table.

Other Result: Harold Wood Athletic Res  H – W  Westhamians  | (Home Walkover)

Senior Division Three

In Senior Three, Leigh Town Res went sixth after a fine win at 3rd-placed Wakebury. Aaron Tyler struck twice alongside a goal for Bradley Shall-Sloan as Robert Hutchings-Spiller’s side came away with a fine victory. Elsewhere, ACD Utd held Corinthians Res 3 – 3 at Westlands. ACD are without a win in four matches now while the Corinthians second-side went back on top of the standings on goal difference.

Finally for this division, in the match I attended at the Len Forge Centre 3G, White Ensign Res were held 1 – 1 by bottom side Hullbridge Sports ‘A’. Henry Shields put Sports ahead before half-time though substitute Mechack-Kisoka Asuka levelled just after the hour mark. Ensign’s second team ended a run of three straight defeats here while Hullbridge ‘A’ picked up their first point of the season in this match. If you’d like more on this match, my report is here:

Match Report & Photos by Scott W [Twitter: @ScottMHC14]

For this weekend’s Saturday match, I elected to defer to Olympian League action once again, and after the glib weather had taken out my initial choice, I headed to the Len Forge Centre to see White Ensign’s reserve side face the Hullbridge Sports ‘A’ side (aka their Developmental side) in EOFL Senior Three. Jack Caten named a decent side with a few of his Ensign team having played for the first team in left-back Yaw Danso, centre-back Daniel Casey and winger Lubona Wyatt. Current first-teamers James Parkins and Bradley Gates started in goal and in midfield respectively. For the Hullbridge side, Josh Boswell and Henry Shields were among their forward line with custodian Rod Morrissey and centre-backs Henry Hands and Oscar Driscoll. Joe Darby and Charlie Oakman were among their substitutes.

Ensign looked to keep the ball on the deck in the early stages of this contest, on a very damp artificial surface. The first real chance though fell to the visitors on six minutes as forward Josh Boswell did well to get past the home defence though after rounding goalkeeper James Parkins, heis effort on goal was blocked by a well-positioned covering defender. The ‘Bridge side did come back into the match and had decent amount of possession in the midway point of the half though Ensign responded as after a good run by winger Lubona Wyatt, the ball came to midfielder Bradley Gates who wafted his strike well over.

Moments later at the other end, a corner for ‘Bridge found centre-back Henry Hands six yards out though his header was punched away by Parkins. Neither side could get that decisive strike away at this point, though on 33 minutes, after a 40-yard run, midfielder Joss Pountney was brought wide by his marker though could still get a shot off that just fizzed past the angle of crossbar and post. The half concluded with two telling chances with varying results. Wyatt showed good persistence n the flank on 37 minutes before finding Pountney though he could only fire off-target with only ‘keeper Rod Morrissey to beat.

And then with half-time a minute away, the Hullbridge side took the lead. A rapid break bypassed the home defence, with Boswell unselfishly playing in Henry Shields who superbly blasted home from twenty yards right in the top corner past Parkins.

Half-Time: White Ensign Res  0 – 1  Hullbridge Sports ‘A’

Ensign introduced Mechack-Kisoka Asuka at the break and he nearly made an instant impact as he had a sight at goal though could only find the side-netting. A flurry of chances followed for both teams, with centre-back Archie Matthews heading wide from forward Lewis Brown’s corner. That was swiftly followed by Boswell crashing a drive against the woodwork in what was a really promising chance. Ensign did level things up on 62 minutes as Asuka used his rapid pace to good effect, breaking through the visiting backline before cooly slotting low past Morrissey into the far corner, just out of the grasp of the covering defender.

The chances continued to sway for both sides, as six minutes after the equaliser, Gates free-kick smashed the crossbar. Seconds later, a powerful strike by midfielder Harry Mole came back off the crossbar and post though it was adjudged not to have crossed the line. In the latter stages of this very open encounter, Matthews and Asuka both struck off-target for the hosts while substitute Joe Darby also hit the woodwork for Hullbridge, he showed good purpose and pace in his cameo. Fellow replacement Charlie Oakman also clipped the post with Parkins to defeat before the Ensign ‘keeper made a sprawling save to deny a super curling effort late on. Brown then had an effort on the stroke of full-time that also grazed the much-used goal frame though both teams had to settle for a point.

Full-Time: White Ensign Res 1 – 1 Hullbridge Sports ‘A’

In some ways, the draw was the right result as either side could have won though unfortunately didn’t have the desired finishing.

In terms of stand-out performances, for the hosts I felt winger Lubona Wyatt stood out with his pace and movement down the left flank, while Mechack-Kisoka Asuka impressed in his appearance from the bench. Centre-back Archie Matthews made some timely interceptions and goalie James Parkins made a few crucial saves as well to keep that point intact. For the visitors, forward Josh Boswell got in many promising positions, and could have easily had a hat-trick. In midfield, Billy Carter put in an energetic shift, with Joe Darby doing well after coming on and Harry Mole also did well at times too.

Finally, my thanks to the hosts for their hospitality today. I wish both sides well for the remainder of the EOFL Senior Three campaign.

Hello and welcome to this week’s round-up of the Essex Olympian League action, which includes matches from the top four divisions, plus the Senior League Cup action on Saturday 26th October. Thanks for reading.

Premier Division

Starting with the six matches in the top-tier, Buckhurst Hill arguably had their match of the season as they powered to a 6 – 1 win over leaders Rayleigh Town at Roding Valley School. Suley Zuhdu opened the scoring for Mark Williams’ side before Fenti Falola’s hat-trick plus strikes by Josh Banfield and Sam Sollosi more than secured their fourth win in their last five matches. Town are now winless in their last three games now. Their lead at the top is down to a single point now as Sungate crushed Harold Wood Athletic 7 – 1 at Harold Wood Park.

Leigh Ramblers are up to third a point further back after grabbing a 5 – 0 triumph at home to Bishop’s Stortford Swifts. Andrew Webster’s brace was added to by strikes by Justin Hazell, Matt Brinklow and Jack Gardner which got the Rams their third consecutive win. Basildon Town also won this weekend, defeating Catholic Utd 3 – 2 at the Len Salmon. Jamie Bradbourn, Mark Frostick and Tommy Green all netted for Bas as they sit sixth after their third win in their last five outings.

Meanwhile, Old Southendian had strikes by Craig Paton and Harry Da Costa to thank for a 2 – 1 win over Canning Town at Garon Park. Shenfield AFC also got their maiden win of the season as they defeated Kelvedon Hatch 3 – 1. Ben Absolon, Mitchell Day and Alex Tredgett all scored to outdo Glen Golby’s goal for Hatch and put AFC up one to second-bottom.

Senior League Cup

Manford Way 1 – 4  Hutton

Westhamians 1 – 2  Hullbridge Sports ‘A’

Anagram Records Trophy

Galleywood  2 – 0 Mursley Utd

EOFL Senior One

In Senior One, Chingford Athletic went a point off the summit with a 3 – 2 win at FC Hamlets. Sam Coe, Alex Gordon and Gary Murray all netted for Ath as they got back to winning ways in the league. Leaders Ongar Town were held 0 – 0 by gritty Old Chelmsfordians which left both sides unbeaten but also ended Ongar’s 100% start to the campaign.

Herongate Athletic got a second straight league success as they defeated bottom side Toby 3 – 0. Lakeside now sit 3rd in the table after a 2 – 1 win at Runwell Sports. Luke Quinton’s double assisted the visitors before later being dismissed. Jordan Gregory struck for Runwell though it is five losses in their six matches thus far. Elsewhere, Ramsden Scotia got only their second win this season with a 2 – 1 win at Rayleigh Town Reserves and Snaresbrook drew 3 – 3 with Shoebury Town.

EOFL Senior Two

Moving into Senior Two, Leigh Town have dropped to second on goal difference as they held 1 – 1 at Ryan, thus ending their perfect start to the season. Corinthians have taken their place at the top after a 5 – 2 victory at home to May & Baker Reserves. Nathan Dewberry got another double, with John Bolton-Smith, Luke Owen and Jordan Stoneham also all on target for the Stambridge-based team. In a battle of high-flyers, Epping Town made it five wins from five as they edged to a hard-fought 2 – 1 win over Beacon Hill Rovers with new recruit Jayden Hocking-Rising scoring both goals for Billy Cove’s side.

Laindon Orient are the ‘best of the rest’ in fifth after being held 1 – 1 by improving Old Southendian Res. Greg Molford netted for Ben Manley’s side while Caiden Imbert-Thomas scored for Laindon. Rochford Town  got a crucial 2 – 1 win over fellow strugglers AS Rawreth with Harry Ford and Luke Jackson goals assisting them up to ninth spot. Finally, winless Wakering Sports were frustrated as they were held 3 – 3 by Harold Wood Athletic Reserves. Mitchell Gleeson, Ryan Gregory and Danny Pallett all netted for Sports though a brace from Joe Pyne and one from Tom Rice gave Ath’s second-string a decent point away from home.

EOFL Senior Three

Toby Reserves lead Senior Three by a single point after a 4 – 1 home win over Basildon Town Reserves. A brace from Luis Ruiz plus goals from Marc Porter-Brown and Rhys Willson secured the Toby side’s third straight win. Town got one back thanks to Grant Cumming though have lost five on-the-reel now. Corinthians Reserves made it five wins from as many matches after a 5 – 0 win at Lakeside Reserves. Luke Smith and Ashley Webb both nabbed doubles here with Liam Ellis also on target for Terry Rose’s side.

Wakebury were also victors this weekend as they won 2 – 1 against ACD Utd at Shoebury Park. A double from Sam Rowe for the hosts saw them to their fourth win in their last five games. Hutton Reserves got their first win of the season in a big way with a 6 – 2 victory over White Ensign Reserves at Polo Fields. George Wickings’ hat-trick led the way with Sean O’Callaghan, Josh Sumner and substitute Jack Shaw all also adding to Jack Caten’s side’s pain.

Round-up: Essex Olympian League & Cups (Sat 5 Oct) [EOFL 19/20 6.10.19]

Archive image: London Road pitch in August 2019 (Image: Scott W)

Written by Scott W [Twitter: @ScottMHC14] – Non-League & EOFL Writer

Hello and welcome to my regular round-up of the week’s action in the Essex Olympian League from Saturday 5 October, looking at the top four divisions, the Senior League Cup action plus results from Senior Division Four and the Reserve League Cup results, all in a ‘one-stop shop’. Thanks for reading.

Premier Division

In another fairly quiet weekend of Premier action, Basildon Town got a fourth win of the season as they defeated Sungate 2 – 1, thanks to goals from Tommy Green and Keith King. Buckhurst Hill were surprisingly held 2 – 2  by Shenfield AFC at Roding Lane. Nathan Sollosi and Suley Zuhdu netted for Mark Williams’ team though Mitchell Day and substitute Liam Snellin strikes levelled things up for ten-man AFC who had Sam Bubb dismissed. Also, Kelvedon Hatch were held 1 – 1 by Rayleigh Town at New Hall. Johnathan Glowacki’s penalty for Hatch was matched by Bailey Moss’ goal for Town as both sides continued their fine starts to the campaign.

EOFL Senior One

In another truncated league programme in Senior One due to the Senior League Cup matches, Lakeside went third with a 2 – 0 win at Snaresbrook. Herongate Athletic got their much sought-after first win this term in the league as they triumphed 5 – 2 at Ramsden Scotia. Substitute Jack Wilson-Jones scored twice, with Glen Jordan, Ben Warren and Scott Williams also all on the score-sheet. Kurt King and replacement Tony Hollis struck for Scotia though they drop to second-bottom having only amassed one point in five matches.

Also, Runwell Sports got their first win in the league with a 4 – 1 success over Manford Way. Joe Olley hit a brace alongside goals from Jordan Gregory and Charlie Adams to send Runwell up to tenth place. Manford’s consolation came via Olajide Yusuff though their afternoon was blighted further as Russell Wilks was sent off.

EOFL Senior Two

Only one match took place in Senior Two, though it did yield a surprise as Beacon Hill Rovers defeated Corinthians 4 – 1 thanks to braces by Stephen Bennett and George Davis, which gave Rovers their third straight league win and end the visitors’ 100% start.

EOFL Senior League Cup

In the Senior League Cup, Senior One side FC Hamlets won 3 – 2 at Senior Two side Epping Town thanks to strikes by John Gilroy, Charlie Heatley and Jack Potten. Epping replied through Alex Paraskeva and Eben Rowledge before Paraskeva had to deputise for injured goalkeeper Brad Molloy, who was forced off. Laindon Orient produced one of the shocks of the round as they defeated Senior One side Shoebury Town 4 – 2 after extra time. Jasper Read and Ashley Blackburn got the goals in normal time as it finished 2 – 2, though Conor Cobb and Blackburn’s second saw them to a fine win away from home.

Meanwhile, Senior One side Toby edged Senior Two side Wakering Sports 2 – 1 at Cupid’s. Peter Spicer and Nick Harvey struck for Toby while Craig Paton replied for Sports though the visitors went through. Finally for the round-up, Senior Four side Roydon secured a big shock, defeating Premier side Canning Town, 6 – 5 on penalty kicks after a 4 – 4 draw after extra-time.
