Hello & welcome to the latest Essex Olympian League column, tracking the action in all divisions & Cups from Saturday 1 April, as the fixture programme was reduced because of – you guessed it, the heavy rain of late.
EOFL Premier Division & Division One
We start the column with a midweek match, which saw Rayleigh Town win 2 – 0 at Shenfield AFC on Wednesday night. Lewis Robson & Jack Long got the goals to see Town reduce the gap to leaders Hutton to seven points. Rayleigh have two matches in hand still & they are due to face Hutton next Saturday (8th Apr, at Thames Road). Shenfield remain eighth. Onto the weekend’s action now, and only two matches got the better of the inclement conditions. One of them saw Old Southendian grind out a 1 – 0 victory over Galleywood, as their match was reversed to Garon Park 3G. An unfortunate OG was decisive in this match, and the ‘Old Boys’ go level on points with Cathoilic Utd who are in third spot. ‘Wood are now eight points adrift of third-bottom & need wins sharpish. The other game saw Kelvedon Hatch play well but were ultimately held 1 – 1 by Springfield in their big game at New Hall. James Nottage got Hatch’s goal & they inch to three points ahead of the bottom two, although Bishop’s Stortford Swifts have a match in hand. Robbie Norris nabbed Springfield’s leveller here, they are two points clear of Kelvedon.
Moving into Division One now, and Manford Way did exactly what they needed to do to stay in the promotion race as they defeated ACD Utd 4 – 1 at the London Marathon Sports Ground. Dawid Potoczek struck twice here for Manford, with Jordan Rock & Siddy Clarkson also on target which saw them go to the summit, two points clear of Harold Wood but they only have one match remaining, whereas all their rivals have at least two matches left, with Harold Wood, Old Chelmsfordians & Corinthians still in the running. James Bell got the solitary goal for ACD, who remain in mid-table. Elsewhere, Harold Hill got back to winning ways as they won 2 – 0 at Wakering Sports, to keep their hopes of mid-table finish going. Bottom side Sports ended their season here & it’s certainly been a tough one, with one win from their 18 games, but points deductions have seen them end on -1.
Into Division Two, and Catholic Utd Res got a fabulous 7 – 1 victory over Rayleigh Town Res at the Len Forge 3G to seal a seventh-placed finish at least. Patrick Mills got a consolation goal for Town but they finished with nine men after two red cards. With there being no action in Division Three because of postponements, we move to the one match in Division Four. It saw Ongar Town get a terrific 5 – 1 victory at Wakering Sports A, held at Cupid’s. Matt Bovill scored twice here for Town, with Ethan Hook, Zak Norfolk & an OG also contributing to the scoresheet. Ongar went three points clear in sixth after this win, and have three matches left this term.
Lastly for the league action, in Division Five there was one match, which saw Shoebury Town Res complete a fine 5 – 2 win at home to Canning Town Res. Mechack-Kisoka Asuka scored another treble here, with Luke Jackson & Alfie Noakes also on target. The win saw them all but complete a seventh-placed finish for the hosts. There was one Cup tie also, in the Reserve Trophy. Manford Way Res went through on penalties, after a 1 – 1 draw with Old Chelmsfordians Res. Charlie Harper scored for Manford here, but Old Chelms’ Martin Mixture forced a leveller before Manford won 5 – 4 on spot-kicks to progress.

This weekend’s match was an intruiging battle between promotion-chasing Corinthians & visitors Harold Hill, who are looking to make the most of their remaining matches to make their into mid-table at least in Essex Olympian League’s Division One. The hosts are dealing with several injuries at present, with influential goal-scorer Bailey Moss, winger Leo Clarke & full-back Billy Wilton among those unavailable. However, manager Chris Stoneham did field goalkeeper Nathan Warren between the sticks, with a central defence comprised of Alfie Knight, Connor Summerhill & Daniel Frimley. Mark Frostick and Charlie Marden were deployed as wing-backs, along with skipper Matt Burrell, Jordan Stoneham and Jake Hinkley in central midfield. Brodie Horne and John Bolton-Smith led the attack here. Harold Hill’s squad was also affected by some of their squad not being available here. They fielded Daniel Johnson in goal, with a four-man defence of Clarence Emeh, Thomas Northwood and Ray Snares & Joseph Connor in central defence. Captain Jack Suters was alongside Connor Leon & Mario Gjini in midfield, with Harry Watkins & Ashley Blackburn leading the forward line, with Troy Tizard-Cleghorn supporting them.

It was certainly a forgettable opening to the game for the visitors, who conceded after only two minutes. Corinthians wing-back Charlie Marden sent in a fine cross from the right side which found the retreating centre-back who could only head the ball past Hill custodian Daniel Johnson and high into his own goal. You had to empathise with the visitors, and they were up against it, dealing with fluid passing & brisk movement from the further motivated home forward line. Hard-working forward Brodie Horne made a good run on five minutes, before finding strike partner John Bolton-Smith, but the latter’s tame effort went wide of Johnson’s woodwork. Harold Hill were still decent on the counter-attack though, as forward Ashley Blackburn fired off-target with a decent curling strike. The visitors did level on 13 minutes, thanks to fine strike by Harry Watkins, as the ball sailed past home stopper Nathan Warren and into the right side of the net.

Much to the hosts’ credit though, they roared back into the lead only three minutes later as another decent flowing move involving wing-back Mark Frostick and skipper Matt Burrell ended with Horne’s calm finish low into the net, leaving Johnson little chance. It got even more frustrating for the visiting dug-out as Corinthians grabbed another goal on 19 minutes. Hill’s defensive lapses were exposed as good link-up play involving Marden and midfielder Jake Hinkley ended with Horne turning his marker well before slotting home with aplomb for his second goal of the day. To be fair though, Billy Cove’s side were still posing a threat on the counter-attack, and Troy Tizard-Cleghorn and Mario Gjini were breaking well from midfield, supporting Watkins & Blackburn to good effect. Tizard-Cleghorn did force a decent save from Warren with his low drive at the near post before the half-hour.

Half-Time: Corinthians 3 – 1 Harold Hill
Corinthians undoubtedly deserved their half-time lead, but there was a sense that there was more to come from this match. The second half began with more promise for the visitors, and Watkins’ good run and cross needed home centre-back Daniel Frimley to divert the ball over his own woodwork, as Hill forced a few set-pieces. Harold Hill did give themselves a chance of salvaging a point from the penalty spot, after referee Dave Bloxham pointed to the spot following Warren’s challenge.
The hosts were adamant that the goalkeeper got the ball but nonetheless, Tizard-Cleghorn slotted home the resulting penalty to the left side of the goal to ensure a gritty last twenty minutes for the hosts, who really needed the points. Harold Hill battled well and pushed further forward in tge latter stages, with substitute Ryan O’Connell’s first touch being a good effort which was well-tipped over the bar by Warren. Hill were leaving gaps in defence but Johnson pulled off a fine save onto the woodwork in added-time to deny Horne a hat-trick, after being unselfishly played in by replacement Max Jones, who moments earlier had fired wide when in a promising position.

Full-Time: Corinthians 3 – 2 Harold Hill
In summary, Corinthians made the most of a tepid start by the visitors and kept possession really well, particularly in the first half. After the break though, Harold Hill showed an admirable amount of courage and pace to force their way back into contention and give the hosts some nervy moments. Ultimately though, Corinthians showed enough steel & defensive nous to claim the win which keeps them fourth in the table, two points clear of Manford Way who picked up a huge 6 – 4 win at Corinthians’ promotion rivals Epping Town today.
There were several good performances from the Corinthians side here. They were led by two-goal striker Brodie Horne, who showcased his high work rate and movement to good effect, as well as utilising cool finishing for both goals. Centre-back Daniel Frimley also had a very good game here, and was a strong presence, making several good interceptions. Charlie Marden had a good game at right wing-back, putting in several good balls into the danger area and having good pace, with Jordan Stoneham having a good all-round game in central midfield also, competing well with the attack-minded visiting midfield.
For Harold Hill, forward Troy Tizard-Celghorn had a good game, with his influence growing after the interval as well as being a good presence in the air & showing decent pace. Ashley Blackburn also put in several good passes and surging runs down the channels to test the home backline at times. Winger Mario Gjini had a decent game also, showing his composure and good movement to make the most of available space. Lastly, a word for Jack Suters, who gave his all in central midfield & then in more of a defensive role after the break, making a number of important interceptions as the match went on.
Finally, I’d like to add that this was a entertaining match to watch and credit to both teams. Also, was nice to see both managers (Messrs Stoneham & Cove) as well, wish their respective teams well.

Hello & welcome to this weekend’s round-up from the action in the Essex Olympian League. This week on Saturday 19 November, we look at the action in all divisions, plus an extra section on the various Cup competitions this weekend.
EOFL Senior Cup
This week we’ll start with the League Senior Cup, where we saw two games. Toby progressed afterr a hard-fought 2 – 1 success at Corinthians, with Jamie Simpkins notching both goals for Mark Jones’ side. Bailey Moss was as ever on the score-sheet for the hosts at Stambridge. Catholic Utd also went through after a 6 – 2 win at home to Manford Way at the Len Forge.

EOFL Premier Division
In the top-tier this week, Hutton remain nine points clear at the summit after a 3 – 0 win at local rivals Shenfield AFC. Brad Freeman, Will Marlowe & Luke Ricketts all scored for Matt Singh’s team at St Martin’s 3G. The Reds have only conceded four league goals in their undefeated ten games thus far, some statistic that is. Runwell Sports also got a much-needed win, as they won 4 – 2 at Kelvedon Hatch. James Dalton netted twice for Rob Hodgson’s side who move up to sixth, with Joe Olley & Gianni Frankis also finding the net to counteract goals for Hatch by Drew Klessa-Smith & Joe Newson. Canning Town are still second after a 1 – 0 win over Bishop’s Stortford Swifts in Beckton.
Division One saw seventeen goals in the three games played. Firstly, leaders Harold Wood Athletic had an enthralling match in their top-two contest with Epping Town, before eventually prevailing 5 – 4 at Harold Wood Rec. James Pottle led the way for the hosts with a treble, added to by goals from Daniel Spittle & Louis Bazely. Epping responded with Scout Bown netting another double, plus strikes by Chris Gormley & replacemement Joe Rickett but Epping are now ten points adrift of Ath. Harold Hill are up to fourth after a 2 – 1 victory over Beacon Hill Rovers at Henderson’s. Jack Sutters got both goals for Billy Cove’s side, with Bradley Morgan replying for Rovers in that game.
The other game saw Old Chelmsfordians maintain their top-four challenge with a 3 – 2 victory against Herongate Athletic at Lawfiord Lane. Adam Cole & George Godfrey both netting for Kurt Smith’s side there.
Into Division Two now, Rayleigh Town Res picked up a huge 4 – 1 win at AS Rawreth to leapfrog them off the bottom & up to seventh spot. Ebeneezer Djan once again led the scorers with a double here, with Matthew Oaten and Samuel Barker also netting here. Leaders Shoebury Town are now six points clear at the top after getting through a hugely-entertaining game at local rivals Old Southendian Res, before emerging with a 7 – 3 victory. Mechack-Kisoka Asuka and Jack Woodham both netted trebles for John Galley & Garry Johnson’s side here, with Luke Jackson also getting the other goal to more than confirm the win. OS’ second side fall to the foot of the table after this result.
Elsewhere, Wakebury picked up a very good 2 – 1 win again Harold Wood Athletic Res at Cupid’s. Will Wheeler netted both goals for Matt Cardy’s side, overhauling Kieron Moynihan’s goal for Ath here. The Berries remain in fourth but other results mean there are three sides on 18 points. May & Baker EOFL won 3 – 1 at home against high-flyers Wakering Sports Res to lift themselves up to sixth. Carl Patten, George Stanbrook & Frankie Warboyes all scored for Josh Lowbridge’s side. Connor Fardyga’s goal was not enough this time to prevent his side losing ground on the leaders Shoebury. Hashtag Utd Dev also got an important win, 5 – 4 at Hutton Res. Chandler Wray scored twice for the Tags side, with Jay Knight, Adam De Cruz and Samuel Pratt goals securing the win which adds to the grip they have on fifth spot currently. Thomas Price’s treble & a Lewis Hall goal were not enough to stop Hutton’s second side from dropping down to third-bottom.
EOFL Divisions Three, Four & Five
In the fourth-tier, Hullbridge Sports Res are in second place on goal difference after a 5 – 3 win at Chingford Athletic Res. Luke Dimond, Leighton Hughes-Franklin & Bilel Benyoucef all netted for Chingford but a treble for Lewis Foster plus goals for Harry Boswell and Jay Knight secured a good win for the visitors. Leigh Town Res are in third after a 4 – 0 win at home to Corinthians Res at John Burrows Rec. Zack Walker, Steve Birnie, Callum Stone & substitute Tommy Clayton all scored for Josh Burrage’s side in that one. Also, Old Chelmsfordians Res won 4 – 1 at Toby Res to go up to third bottom.
Into Division Four now, and Roydon extended their lead at the top to three points after a 2 – 0 victory at Ongar Town. Nader Benzid and substitute Zachary Ogundipe both netted to strengthen the promotion hopefuls’ chances on remaining in the top three. Elsewhere, Collier Row remain second after a goal-less draw with Herongate Athletic Res at Fotest Row, while at Basildon Sporting Village, Pitsea Athletic Res were held 1 – 1 by Leytonstone Utd, who got their first point of the campaign.
In Division Five, Basildon Town A had to overcome a stern test at St Luke’s Park before defeating Runwell Sports Res 3 – 2. Nathan Fisher scored twice for Bas, with Luke Soley also on target to give the visitors a one-point lead at the summit. Manford Way Res are up to second after a 4 – 1 triumph over Shoebury Town Res. The ensemble cast of Luke Bennett, Aaron Clements, George Green & replacement Harvey Brown all netted to ensure the win. Collier Row Res are five points further back in fourth spot after a 3 – 1 success at Canning Town Res. Celso Da Silva, Raheem Bravo & Harry Potts were all on target to secure the points.

EOFL Premier Division
Firstly in the top-tier, Kelvedon Hatch got a good 2 – 0 victory at Leigh Ramblers, with Drew Klessa-Smith and Reece Simpson the scorers for Darren Hunt’s side. Other results in the division were Canning Town’s 5 – 0 win over Galleywood, Old Southendian’s fine 3 – 1 success at Catholic Utd and Sungate getting another way win with a 2 – 0 victory at Shenfield AFC.
EOFL Divisions One & Two
The second tier saw plenty of goals & a few surprises. First up there was no shock at Henderson’s though but Harold Hill did have to come from behind to defeat Wakering Sports 4 – 1. Ryan Curtis had given Sports an early lead, but a double from Jack Suters, plus goals from Ashley Blackburn and Joel Sampson swiveled the match in Hill’s favour, which sees Billy Cove’s team rise up to sixth spot. Elsewhere, Epping Town got an important 4 – 2 victory over Beacon Hill Rovers to leap yp to second. Substitute Scout Bown nabbed a fine treble along with a Chris Gormley goal to see Stuart Hoskins’ side to the points. ACD Utd were also triumphant following a 2 – 1 win at home to Herongate Athletic at Westlands. Harry Payne & Jacob Dingli both netted for Michael Wade’s side, with this win taking them up to third. Old Chelmsfordians got a big 4 – 1 success at fellow top five side Corinthians while Manford Way drew 2 – 2 with leaders Harold Wood Athletic, with James Pottle & Leroy Griffiths both netting for Ath there.
In Division Two this week, Shoebury Town went top of the table with six wins from six after a 3 – 2 win at Hashtag Utd Development at Barleylands. Kian Bradshaw, Luke Jackson & Aaron Marshall got the goals for Garry Johnson & John Galley’s side as they kept up their terrific start to the season. Harold Wood Athletic Res are third after a 4 – 0 home win over Rayleigh Town Res. Joe Eldridge’s brace allied with strikes by Chris Dixon & Freddy Shepherd secured the points there while Wakebury are now fourth after a 3 – 1 victory at Hutton Res. Will Wheeler, Finlay Dorrell & Mark Frostick all netted for Matt Cardy’s team there as they notched their fifth win this term. David Johnson replied for the Reds’ second-side. In the other game, AS Rawreth got a rare away win, prevailing 1 – 0 at Old Southendian Res at Garon Park 3G to lift them into mid-table.
EOFL Divisions Three, Four & Five
Into Division Three now, Buckhurst Hill U23 got back on form with a 2 – 0 victory at Old Chelmsfordians Res, thanks largely to a double from Jacob Samber Richards for Darren Gosnell’s side. Hill stay fifth after this win. Hullbridge‘s Ressie side won 3 – 1 at Toby Res thanks to a Jay Knight double & one from Joe Tuskin, which takes them up to second. Basildon Town Res are still two points clear after a big win in a fantastic game, 7 – 4 at Chingford Athletic Res, while Springfield Res also won, 3 – 1 at home to Leigh Town Res.
In Division Four, Roydon are now three points clear at the summit following a 6 – 0 success at home to struggling Leytonstone Utd. Nader Benzid scored twice here, with the supporting cast of Mike Hayes, Connor Riddoch, Connor Presland & OG rounding out the scorers as Roydon remain unbeaten this term. Leigh Ramblers Res won 1 – 0 at Galleywood Res to go up to fourth, while in the other game, Pitsea Athletic Res drew 4 – 4 with Shenfield AFC Res.
Finally in the only match in Division Five, Runwell Sports Res got back to winning ways with a 3 – 1 triumph at Sungate Res in East London. The result puts Runwell’s second side back to second while the Sungate side are winless so far this term.
EOFL Senior League Cup
There were just the two matches in the Senior League Cup this weekend. Firstly, Rayleigh Town went through uin a rare first-team game this term back at London Road. Town defeated May & Baker EOFL 5 – 2, with George Vile and Phil Anunwa both netting two goals each, with other goal coming from Sonny Woodward. Alfie Horan and Frankie Worboyes got the goals for M & B there. In the other tie, top-tier Hutton had a scare before overcoming Division Four side Collier Row 3 – 2 at Forest Row.

This week on Saturday 29 October, we look at the action in all divisions, plus an extra section on Senior League Cup games this weekend. EOFL Premier Division
Firstly in the top-tier, Hutton extended their lead at the summit to nine points after a 2 – 1 win against Canning Town at Chadfields. Stephen Judge & substitute Brad Freeman got the crucial goals for Matt Singh’s side whgo are really pushing the pressure onto the chasing pack. Kelvedon Hatch got a important success as they defeated secopnd-placed Rayleigh Town 3 – 1 at New Hall. Drew Klessa-Smith scored a double, along with a goal for James Burt for Darren Hunt’s side. Hatch are up to 10th. Shenfield AFC continued their good recent form, with a 2 – 1 success against Catholic Utd at St Martins. Ben Absolon & Ben Carroll both netted to outdo substitute James Warder’s reply for Simon Thomas’ side.
Lastly, Sungate powered their way to a 3 – 1 win at Toby. Substitute Petrit Elbi scored two goals here, with Lee Samwys adding the other to see the ‘Gate up to seventh. Jamie Simpkins got the consolation for Mark Jones’ side in that game.
EOFL Divisions One & Two
The only match in Division One this week saw Beacon Hill Rovers draw 4 – 4 with Manford Way. Jack Walker’s double plus strikes by Bertie Whymark & Semi Akinlolu accounted for the Rovers goals but a goal each for Samuel Oramadike, David Alele, Joshua Owoaje and Richard Kadima ensured Manford took a point.
In Division Two this week, Shoebury Town got a important & hard-fought 3 – 1 victory over Hutton Res at Ekco Sports Club. Mechack-Kisoka Ausuka netted a double here for John Galley & Garry Johnson’s side, with Luke Jackson scoring a late penalty. Will Marlowe had earlier kept Hutton in the game. Wakering Sports Res are three points clear of Shoebury at the summit after a 4 – 0 success over Harold Wood Athletic Res. Liam Jarrett notched a double, with Connor Fardyga’s 6th league goal and Charlie Smith also on on target. In other results, May & Baker EOFL defeated Catholic Utd Res 4 – 0 and Old Southendian Res won 5 – 1 against Rayleigh Twn Res at Garon Park 3G.
EOFL Divisions Three, Four & Five
Into Division Three now, Basildon Town Res are the new leaders after an impressive 5 – 2 triumph at Buckhurst Hill U23. Louis Hill got a double, with Ashley Drury, Jamie Miller and replacement Keith King also netted for the visitors. Harvey Woods & Jack Ferris goals responded for Buckhurst there. Corinthians Res got their first win of the term as they defeated Toby Res 2 – 1 at Stambridge. Kian Hayter & Leo Clarke got the goals for the hosts. Old Chelmsfordians Res also got their first win with a 1 – 0 victory at Springfield Res. Also, Leigh Town Res were held 1 – 1 by Hulllbridge Res at John Burrows Rec. Chris Pope scored for Town, with Joe Tuskin’s 5th league goal replying for ‘Bridge.
Moving into Division Four now, Herongate Athletic Res remain five points clear in third after a 1 – 1 draw at Shenfield AFC Res. Habeeb Apatira’s fifth league goal accounted for Ath’s goal, with Ben Cawood levelling the game for AFC. Collier Row lead the way at the summit on goal difference with a 3 – 1 win at BIshop’s Stortford Swifts Res. Matt Kemp’s sixth league goal was the consolation for Swifts there. Wakering Sports A drew 3 – 3 with Pitsea Athletic Res at Cupid’s. Joseph Young, Alfie Grove & substitute James Clark got Wakering’s goals, but strikes for Carlos Dias, Precious Aminu & Paul Gunn meant Ath left with a point.
Finally in Division Five, leaders Basildon Town A made it six wins from six after a 2 – 1 win over Sungate Res at Basildon Sports Club. Donnel Kujinga scored another double to reach 11 league goals already, and James Oderinde netted for the visitors. Manford Way Res are two points behind in second after a 6 – 0 home win over AS Rawreth Res. Luke Bennett grabbed a fine treble, with a brace for Charlie Webb & Callum Thomas also on target. Collier Row Res are well-placed in fourth after a resounding 7 – 0 win at Runwell Sports Res. Celso Da Silva netted twice for Row, with the ensemble cast of Raheem Bravo, George Coker, Harry Potts, Eric Eze & Ryan Costello also scoring.
EOFL Senior League Cup
There were several matches in the Senior League Cup this weekend. Harold Wood Athletic made sure of their place in the next round with a 2 – 0 win against spirited Roydon at Harold Wood Park. Ben Woolven and Owen Edwards were the scorers for John Field’s team. Springfield got their second consecutive win in all competitions as they won 4 – 0 at Ongar Town. Replacement Tristan Ofori-Sampong nabbed two goals for Allan Fenn’s side, with Cameron Brown and Harrison Elles also netting after comiing off the bench. Runwell Sports got a much-needed victory with a 5 – 1 success at Galleywood. The scorers for Rob Hodgson’s side included Jamie Philbrick, Charlie Little, Ollie Quick and Oliver Williamson. Freddie Bartram got the solitary reply for the hosts at Slades Lane.
Elsewhere, Bishop’s Stortford Swifts also got an important win against lower division opposition in Pitsea Athletic. Alfie Bowen’s brace and one from substitute Jordan Trott enabled Swifts to get a 3 – 2 victory. Leigh Ramblers also went through with a 1 – 0 victory over ACD Utd at Belfairs, with Andrew Webster again the hero for the Rams. Hashtag Utd Development also went through after a hard-fought 4 – 3 win over Epping Town after extra time. Lastly, Harold Hill went through with a 5 – 1 success at Leytonstone Utd. Ryan O’Connell grabbed another two goals here, with substitute James Bayo also scoring a brace, alongside one for Troy Tizard-Cleghorn. William Medlock was the scorer for Utd at Forest Row.

This week on Saturday 17 September, we look at the action in all six divisions, plus an extra section on the Essex Premier Cup which also got underway once again this weekend. EOFL Premier Division & Division One
We start this week in the top-tier with Toby‘s 3 – 2 win over Bishop’s Stortford Swifts at the Nursery Sports Ground. Jamie Simpkins, Oliver Dingli and Luis Ruiz’s spot-kick were enough to send Mark Jones’ team to victory, overhauling goals from Jordan Robertson and Jack Clarke for Swifts to confirm the points. Hutton had a Stephen Judge goal to thank for a 1 – 0 win over Old Southendian at Chadfields which keeps them top by three points.
In the match I saw myself at Thames Road, Rayleigh Town left it late to secure a comeback 4 – 3 win over Leigh Ramblers in a superb match. Frank Hession-Harris, Will Baldry, Harry Talbot and substitute Philip Anunwa’s strike overturned a brace from Andrew Webster and a stunner from Scott Clark to grab the points. Finally in the Premier, Springfield were held 2 – 2 by Canning Town. Emmanuel Etcheri and Arinze Ossai both netted for Franco Zabotti’s side.
In Division One, Harold Wood Athletic continued their fine form with a 5 – 0 victory over Wakering Sports at Cupid’s. James Pottle netted twice again here, with the supporting cast of Leroy Griffiths, Billy Gray and Connor Sheehan all netting for John Field’s team, who are three points clear at the summit. Corinthians sit second after a 4 – 2 success at home to Herongate Athletic. Bailey Moss netted another fine treble here for Chris Stoneham’s team, with Max Jones adding the other after coming off the bench. Both the top two remain unbeaten.
Still in the second-tier, Manford Way got their first win of the new term in some style as they won 5 – 1 at home to Leigh Town. David Alele, Richard Kadima, Dawid Potoczek, Alfie Smith and substitute Samuel Oramadike all scored to secure the win. Zack Walker got the consolation goal in what proved to be boss Antony Lane’s last game in charge, I’d like to wish him well for the future.
EOFL Divisions Two & Three
In the only Division Two match this week, Harold Wood Athletic Res were too strong on this day as they defeated May & Baker EOFL 5 – 2 at Harold Wood Rec. Thomas Butler scored twice here for the hosts, with substitutes Del Hawtin, Lennie Milton-White & Sam Tampkins all netting as well.
In Division Three, Hullbridge Sports Res were a rare side who handed Bickhurst Hill U23 a defeat at home, with Hullbridge winning 3 – 2. Joe Tuskin scored twice for the Sports’ developmental side, and Jay Knight was once again on the score-sheet. Stefanos Ladoukakis and Jack Barnes goals made it tight but ultimately the Buckhurst developmental side fell to defeat. Also, Leigh Town Res were 2 – 0 winners at Old Chelmsfordians Res, with Chris Pope and substitute Nathan Cox on target for Josh Burrage’s side. Lastly in Division Three, Pitsea Athletic were 3 – 1 victors over Springfield Res at Basildon Sports Club. Liam Jeffrey netted twice here, with replacement Carlos Dias adding his name on the score-sheet. Harrison Elles responded for the visitors.
EOFL Divisions Four & Five
Moving into Division Four now, Roydon continued their decent start with a 1 – 0 win away at Shenfield AFC Res. Rene Pivarnik was the hero as they celebrated another welcome win. Leigh Ramblers Res also got a huge win with an 8 – 0 triumph over Ongar Town at Belfairs. Substitute Temi Adebayo struck three goals here, with Luis Bracci adding two goals plus there was one goal each for Taylor Stewart, Matthew Pooley and replacement Cameron Jarvis. Bishop’s Stortford Swifts Res also got maximum points with a 4 – 1 win over Galleywood Res at Silver Leys. Substitute Matt Kemp led the charge with two goals, with Henry Harnack and Matthew Allen adding to the visitors’ pain.
Elsewhere in Division Four, Herongate Athletic Res got all three points with a 4 – 0 victory over Pitsea Athletic Res at St Clere’s 3G. Kai Redmond scored twice here, with Kemston Allen and Kieron Wilson-Fowler also finding the net in this good win. The other game saw Collier Row grab a huge 7 – 1 victory over Wakering Sports Res at Forest Row Centre.
In Division Five, Basildon Town A got a big 7 – 0 triumph at AS Rawreth Res, with Harry Payne scoring a treble, Scott Read adding two goals and Rodney Wilson getting the other strike. Wakebury Res also got three points, as they won 2 – 1 at Shoebury Town Res. Tommy Wolfe got both goals for Joe Creak’s team there. The other result saw Runwell Sports Res defeat Epping Town Res 5 – 0 at St Luke’s Park. Benjamin See and substitute Wallace Hoyi both netted twice here, with Alex Gray grabbing the other goal.
Essex Premier Cup R1
So the EPC got underway with the various leagues at Step 7 of the pyramid (Essex Olympian, Essex Alliance, Essex & Suffolk Border etc) facing each other as well as some Reserve sides. We begin our in-focus look at seven matches with Shoebury Town‘s superb 5 – 1 victory over Olympian League local rivals Old Southendian Res. Kyle McAlindon came off the bench to score twice for Garry Johnson & John Galley’s team here, with Kian Bradshaw, Aaron Marshall and Enoch Gyimah also finding the net. Jack Pagett’s goal for the OS side did little to inspire them unfortunately.
In the lunchtime game, Catholic Utd negoiated a tricky trip to Barking U23 as Utd prrevailed 4 – 0 at Mayesbrook Park 3G. Louis Robinson, Franklin Craik, Ben Burrows and James Warder all netted for Simon Thomas’ team as they progressed. Beacon Hill Rovers went through thanks to a 3 – 2 win over Saffron Walden Town Res with Charles Brewer, Ashley Hill and Jack Walker all netting for the victors there. Harold Hill also had a good day, as they defeated fellow Olympian side AS Rawreth 4 – 1. Robbie Farrell, Charles Georgiou, Joe Killingback and Freddie Madle all score to see Billy Cove’s side through.
ACD Utd also went through after despatching Belle Vue SC 4 – 1 at Westlands. Jacob Dingli scored twice here for Michael Wade’s team, with Scott Perkins and an OG accounting for the other goals. Galleywood were made to work hard for their 3 – 2 victory over West Essex Development, with Roman Sparks’ double leading the way and Ben Smith also notching for the hosts there. Lastly for this week, Old Chelmsfordians progressed with a 3 – 1 success over Takeley Res. The trio of Max Johnson, Shane Pritchard and Greg Strong were all on target to see the hosts through. Alfie Nicholls got the solitary reply for the ESL Reserve side.

EOFL Premier Division
The Premier Division begins with a fabulous 6 – 1 win for Rayleigh Town at Bishop’s Stortford Swifts. Paul Higgins’ team have continued their good early season form with this big win, which saw Harry Talbot and Jack Long both score two goals each, with substitutes Sonny Woodward and Lewis Robson also finding the net. Replacement Alfie Bowen got a consolation goal for Swifts here. Catholic Utd also got a big win, despatching Galleywood 5 – 0 at the Len Forge. Aaron Baldwin & Franklin Craik both scored braces for Simon Thomas’ side, with Matt Wilson also notching to give the ‘Super Hoops’ their third consecutive win.
Also, Leigh Ramblers got a important 1 – 0 victory at Shenfield AFC, with Scott Clark getting the decisive goal for Mark Hunter’s team. At Chadfields, Hutton were held to a goal-less draw by Runwell Sports but Matt Singh’s side remain top because of their unbeaten record. Kelvedon Hatch were held 2 – 2 by Sungate at New Hall with Charlie Nichols and replacement Joe Cull getting the goals for Darren Hunt’s team.
In the match I saw live on Saturday, Canning Town made the most of a strong first-half as they won 4 – 3 at Old Southendian. Nabil Musah’s fine hat-trick allied with Napat Pattanawanitkitkul’s goal was enough to edge them to their third win of the campaign after OS came back strongly in second half through goals from Ed Gould, Jordan Faulkner and a pearler from Callum Ludlaim. EOFL Division One
In Division One, ACD Utd continued their decent season with a good 3 – 2 trimuph at Beacon Hill Rovers. Samuel Payne, Jamie Alexandrou and Shaun Goddard netted for Michael Wade’s side, but had to deal with a Rovers comeback which saw Lewis Sherwood and Bertie Whymark reply for the home side there. Epping Town got a superb 5 – 0 win at Wakering Sports, with Chris Gormley and Abdul Kamara both getting two goals apiece, while Joe Rickett contributed the other goal to add to Sports’ pain at Cupid’s Country Club.
In the other action in the division, Harold Hill defeated Herongate Athletic 2 – 1 at Noak Hill, while Corinthians were held 2 – 2 by Harold Wood Athletic. Bailey Moss got both goals for the hosts with James Pottle’s goal and another Billy Gray spot-kick giving John Field’s team a share of the points at Stambridge Memorial Ground, Ath also remain top.
EOFL Divisions Two & Three
In Division Two, Shoebury Town began their campaign with a 2 – 1 victory at Harold Wood Athletic Res. Kian Bradshaw & Dominic Walton got the goals for Garry Johnson & John Galley’s side, though Charlie Portway did get an added-time reply for Wood at Harold Wood Rec. Hutton Res also triumphed this weekend, as goals from David Johnson and Jonathan Hillard saw them to a 2 – 0 win at AS Rawreth to join a chorus of four teams on six points at the summit.
Hashtag Utd Development were also in action and got a important 2 – 1 success over Wakebury at Barleylands. Chandler Wray got both goals in the first half for the Tags’ youth side to render Harry Kateley’s goal in response a consolation for Matt Cardy’s team. In the other match in Division Two, Wakering Sports Res narrowly defeated May & Baker EOFL 3 – 2 at Cupid’s to continue their decent start to the season.
Moving now into Division Three, Basildon Town Res got a 2 – 1 victory at Toby Res, with Joshua Hales scoring both goals at the Nursery Sports Ground. Pitsea Athletic lead the table at this very early stage after a 4 – 0 win at home to Corinthians Res at Basildon Sports Club. The ensemble cast of scorers fir the hosts were Precious Aminu, Kwadwo Asante, Emmanuel Ampaabeng and substitute Joshua Ledger.
Also, Collier Row got a 2 – 0 success at Leytonstone Utd in the ‘Forest Row derby’. Buckhurst Hill U23 are still unbeaten after three matches and reside in second spot after drawing 1 – 1 with Leigh Town Res at Roding Lane. Substitute Divine Ngonye netted for Buckhurst’s developmental side there.
Lastly in Division Three, Springfield Res were held to an entertaining 3 – 3 draw with Hullbridge Sports Res at Chelmer Valley School. Jay Knight got two goals for Jason Mole’s side, plus Harry Mole also netted but it was not enough to get the points.

Hello & welcome to the return of the Essex Olympian League round-up articles for the 2022-23 season. I will endeavour to compile these as often as I can during the season, though just as an advance notice that they may not be done weekly. This week, we look the action in all six divisions, as the new EOFL season began in earnest.

EOFL Premier Division
As usual we begin with the top-tier, and in a season of change which includes two new names to the division (Toby & Runwell Sports) and a few clubs moving into ground-shares at Senior grounds, we start with Hutton‘s 2 – 1 victory over Rayleigh Town at Tilbury’s Chadfields. Stalwarts Will Marlowe and Stephen Judge got the important goals there as Matt Singh’s side began their new era well. Catholic Utd also began their new season well with an impressive 5 – 1 success at newcomers Toby. Aaron Baldwin started his season with a treble, with substitutes Harrison Day and Liam Oliver also notching at Toby’s new venue – the Nursery Sports Ground in Ramsden Heath.
Elsewhhere, Bishop’s Stortford Swifts grabbed a 2 – 0 triumph over Sungate at Silver Leys. Jamie Dicker and William Morris secured the points for the home team there. Old Southendian also started with a win as they defeated Springfield 2 – 1 at Garon Park 3G. Nico Dubouchet and Jack Lelliott scored one goal each for Altan Ali’s team to overturn Arinze Ossai’s goal for Francesco Zabotti’s team. Other results on the day were Runwell Sports’ 1 – 1 draw with Galleywood and Canning Town‘s 3 – 1 success over Shenfield AFC.
EOFL Division One
In Division One, Harold Wood Athletic began life in the second-tier with a fine 4 – 0 victory over Old Chelmsfordians. Matt Donovan, Billy Gray, Zach Holding and Max Shepherd were the ensemble cast of scorers to give John Field’s new side the points. Harold Hill also began their season under new management with a win, as they defeated Leigh Town 2 – 0 at Noak Hill. James Odhiamba and Troy Tizard-Cleghorn got the goals for Billy Cove’s new team.
In the match I watched live this weekend to mark the new Intermediate season, Corinthians were made to work hard before earning a 3 – 1 victory over divisional newcomers ACD Utd at Stambridge. Bailey Moss netted twice and Bill Wilton added the other goal for Chris Stoneham’s team, after Samuel Payne had earlier given ACD the advantage. Finally in this division, Epping Town started their campaign strongly with a 5 – 2 victory at Beacon Hill Rovers. Sacha Canning and Jack Walker got the goals for Rovers but ultimately, Stuart Hoskins’ side were too strong on the day.
EOFL Divisions Two & Three
Moving into Division Two now and in the two games that took place, both were won by the visiting side. Wakebury began their season with a gutsy 2 – 1 triumph at Wakering Sports Res at Cupid’s. Ben Rowe and Will Wheeler got the telling goals to give Matt Cardy’s side the points. Harold Wood Athletic Res got a narrow 1 – 0 success at newcomers Hashtag Utd Development, with Thomas Butler getting the only goal on the half-hour.
Only one match began the term in Division Three, and it ended in a draw. Basildon Town Res fought hard but were held 2 – 2 by Old Chelmsfordians Res at Basildon Sports Club. Rodney Wilson and Joshua Hales got the goals for the hosts there.
EOFL Divisions Four & Five
Roydon began their new season in Division Four with a superb 4 – 1 victory at Wakering Sports A on the second pitch at Cupid’s. Connor Riddoch scored twice here, with Max Pike and Connor Presland also netting for the visitors. In the other game, Collier Row began life in the fifth-tier with a comfortable 3 – 0 win against visitors Bishop’s Stortford Swifts Res.
Just the one match in Division Five this week, which saw Collier Row Res launch their season with an excellent 7 – 1 win over newcomers Manford Way Res at Forest Row Centre.

Essex Olympian Lge – Saturday 9 April
EOFL Premier Division, Divisions One & Two
In the Premier Division, Leigh Ramblers got a key 2 – 1 win over relegation rivals Canning Town to keep them four points clear of the bottom three. Nathan Dewberry got both goals for Mark Hunter’s team. The Rams open the midweek matches in the EOFL this week with the visit of Springfield to Belfairs. Kelvedon Hatch deepened Harold Wood Athletic’s concerns of the drop as Hatch won 4 – 1 at New Hall. Drew Klessa-Smith got another two goals to take his tally to 17 this term, which was allied with strikes by substitutes Tom Johnson & Darren Jiro to give Darren Hunt’s side the points. Tim Hinds-Addow also got a goal for Ath after coming off the bench. Galleywood are still requiring points after they lost to Hutton 2- 1 at Slades Lane. The ever-dependable duo of Brad Freeman and Will Marlowe both netted for Matt Singh’s side as they kept pace with the top three above them. Matthew Crick replied for ‘Wood though they have seven matches to overhaul Leigh Ramblers and Springfield directly above them.
At the summit, Basildon Town got a 2 – 0 triumph over Catholic Utd with Jamie Bradbourn and Ryan Scougall’s fine free-kick proving enough to give Marcus Bowers’ side the points and reduce the gap to the top two to just one point with at least one match more to play. Utd remain sixth with Sungate their main rivals for that spot after they comfortably defeated Springfield 6 – 0 in NE London. Finally, Rayleigh Town maintained their good form with a 4 – 0 away win at Shenfield AFC. Harry Talbot is the division’s top-scorer now with 19 goals this term after a double here. Liam Oliver and Jack Long also netted for Paul Higgins’ team as they for the moment went top, above Ongar on goal difference, having played a game more.
News: It was announced this week that Basildon Town are leaving their current tenancy at Basildon Utd, with Marcus Bowers’ side having agreed to ground-share at Step 3 team East Thurrock Utd next season.
In Division One, there was a shift in the dynamics in the promotion race as Epping Town defeated second-placed Toby 4 – 3 at Epping UC Rugby Club. Stuart Hoskins’ side put in a big display to ensure a mid-table finish thanks to Joe Rickett’s 10th league goal this term, plus strikes from Callum Turner, Chris Gormley and Conor Corrigan. Mark Jones’ team replied through goals from Albert Perry, Nick Walk and Jake Jones but they ended their season here in the knowledge that if Wakering Sports win by six goals in their last game, the latter side will be promoted.
Toby’s loss also confirmed Runwell Sports as Champions of the Division, so again congrats to Rob Hodgson, all his management team and the squad. Wakering Sports did their part on Saturday as they had three second-half goals to thank for a 3 – 0 victory at Corinthians. The substitutes made the difference here as two goals for Mohammed Sesay and one from Callum Burns-Green were enough to claim the win. Finally, Leigh Town drew 2 – 2 with Beacon Hill Rovers at John Burrows Rec, which means both sides will likely need to avoid defeat in their last game to avoid a bottom-two finish.
Moving into Division Two now, leaders ACD Utd fell to only their third loss of the season as Manford Way won 1 – 0 at Westlands. James Dobson got the vital goal for Manford as they stayed three points adrift of second-placed Harold Hill. ACD need four points from their last two games to complete the job with yet another title. Harold Hill stay second after a 3 – 0 triumph over Old Southendian Res at Noak Hill – it is most likely that one win in their last two matches will confirm promotion as they have a superior goal difference to the teams below them.
Elsewhere, Harold Wood Athletic Res held Wakebury to a 3 – 3 draw at Harold Wood Park. Ben Rowe got two goals here while Josh Portway also scored for Steve Hubbard’s team, who are pretty much safe from the bottom two now. Harry Kateley, Kofi Gyamfi and Ibrahim Kagbanda all scored in reply for Matt Cardy’s side but it seems most likely they will finish fourth after a fine debut campaign at this level.
Also, Shoebury Town ended their season with a positive 3 – 1 win over Rochford Town at Cupid’s. Garry Johnson’s side sit fifth with aspirations of a better season next term with their youthful squad. Rochford will likely finish bottom, with only one match left to play later this month – at Wakebury. Finally, Rayleigh Town Res defeated Hutton Res 3 – 1 at London Road, which means Town could finish seventh and Hutton’s second-side still needing points from their remaining two games to avoid a bottom-two finish.
EOFL Divisions Three, Four & Five
Into Division Three, Toby Res went up to sixth after a 2 – 0 victory over Hullbridge Res in the early kick-off in Newbury Park. Oliver Dingli went joint-top in the lead goal-scorers charts with 23 league goals after a brace here for the hosts, congrats to Ollie on another fine season. ‘Bridge will finish no better than eighth this season after this loss. In the other result, Wakering Sports Res got a hard-fought 3 – 2 win at Leigh Town Res which takes them top of the table, in a tight promotion race.
Moving into Division Four, Springfield Res had a super 7 – 0 success at home to Sungate Dev to put them five points clear in second spot. The Sungate side need at least five points from their last five matches to avoid a bottom-two finish. Also in the relegation battle are Leytonstone Utd, who ended their campaign with a 2 – 2 draw with Shenfield AFC Res. The draw means that Utd will have to await other results as both Galleywood Res & Sungate Development have several matches left to play.
In Division Five, Collier Row Res ended their season with a fine 3 – 1 win at Snaresbrook Res, with Nicholas George, Harry Potts and Raheem Bravo all on target to ensure they will finish the campaign no worse than seventh. Snaresbrook have one match left to play and can finish sixth with a win. Also, Herongate Athletic Res drew 0 – 0 with Pitsea Athletic Res at Billericay Road, which means that the PItsea side will finish third and Herongate fourth, as they both have one match remaining.

As ever, there was a number of competitions being played (the EOFL Senior Cup, Reserve League Cup, Ressie Trophy, Denny King Memorial Cup & Essex Premier Cup). This week, the focus is on the League action once again, and we will have additional sections on Division Three plus the results in Divisions Four & Five plus the Cups.
Essex Olympian Lge – Saturday 12 March
EOFL Premier Division, Divisions One & Two
In the Premier Division, Ongar Town kept their four point lead at the summit with a comprehensive 6 – 1 success at home to Sungate. The ensemble cast of Jack Zielinski, Harry Rawlins, Fred Mattock, Joe Lily, Conner Jones and Paul Cox were all on target for Richard Ponsford’s side, with a fine strike from Kyran Chiedozie proving little consolation for ‘Gate here, they remain seventh with 11 matches still to play. Elsewhere, Rayleigh Town remain second after a 3 – 1 victory at Kelvedon Hatch. Liam Oliver, Ben Baxter and replacement Habeeb Apatira all netted for Paul Higgins’ side who remain in the hunt for the title. Joseph Newson responded for Kelvedon who drop to fifth but have still have a great season under Darren Hunt’s management team.
Also, Hutton are fourth on goal difference after a tight 1 – 0 win at home to Springfield, with Brad Freeman once again the goal-scoring talisman for Matt Singh’s side. They went level on points with Basildon Town in third after they beaten 2 – 1 by Bishop’s Stortford Swifts at Silver Leys. Sam Chaney and Samuel Brown both scored for Swifts as they got a memorable win which almost secures their place in the division. Basildon still have eight games to overhaul the sides above them, and player-boss Marcus Bowers netted for them here.
Old Southendian strengthened their position in the top ten with a fine 3 – 1 victory at Galleywood, with goals courtesy of Mitchell Ali, Mattias Tonking and substitute Harry DaCosta securing their ninth win this term. Thomas Watling got the solitary goal for ‘Wood here, they remain in the bottom four. Finally, Shenfield AFC got a 1 – 0 success at home to Leigh Ramblers to remain comfortably clear of the bottom four in eighth.
In Division One, there were big wins for the chasing pack as they sought to join Runwell Sports in the promotion spots. Toby got a terrific 3 – 1 win at Old Chelmsfordians, with Albert Perry, Harry Barham and Luis Ruiz all scoring for the Brewers to maintain a chance of pinching the title on their last game. Liam Landers responded for OC’s who will have to be satisfied with a mid-table finish. Wakering Sports also got a precious three points with a 2 – 1 triumph at strugglers Beacon Hill Rovers. Aaron Clark and substitute Ben Burrows got the points for Paul Morgan’s side here, who remain third but must win both their remaining games to have any chance of a top-two finish. Bertie Whymark scored for Rovers in that game. Corinthians got a Walkover win against Chingford Athletic, who have now been removed from the divisional table after withdrawing from the remainder of the campaign. Chris Stoneham’s Corinthians side still have the opportunity of finishing third if they win their last two games.
Moving into Division Two, Harold Hill remain in prime position for a promotion spot after a hard-fought 5 – 4 win at May & Baker A. Braces for Alagi Juwara and Jose Hernandez were not enough for Bakers’ to grab a point here, they remain seventh. Wakebury also got a narrow win to go back into third spot, following a 3 – 2 triumph at Rayleigh Town Res. Jerry Nkoy, Will Wheeler and an OG were enough to give Matt Cardy’s side the win and keep them in with a chance of a top-two finish. Town remain eighth. Also, Manford Way drew 2 – 2 with Shoebury Town with Samuel Oramadike and Charlie Parish scoring for Manford. Player-boss Garry Johnson and substitute Steven Sharpe both got on the scoresheet for Town, who edge five points clear in sixth with this point. Manford need one more victory to secure fourth spot as a minimum this term.
Finally, Harold Wood Athletic Res took a big stride toward safety with a 3 – 2 success at Old Southendian Res. Daniel Spittle, Thomas Butler and Arthur Simmons all scored for Steve Hubbard’s side here to go six points clear of the bottom two. Charlie Kernott and replacement Charlie Carter both netted for Josh Bambury’s side who look set for a mid-table finish.

EOFL Divisions Three
Into Division Three now, Basildon Town Res got a 5 – 1 win at Collier Row to confirm they will finish at least fourth in the table. Grant Cumming scored twice here with Benjamin Smith, Joe Barnett and Louis Hill also on target for Tony Bowers’ side. Row look set for another relegation as they are two points adrift at the bottom, with only one match remaining. Corinthians Res got a decent 2 – 2 with improving Buckhurst Hill U23 at Stambridge. Bailey Moss got both goals for the hosts, with Harry Maslin and Louie Cooper responding for Hill who could still finish sixth this term. Wakering Sports Res got an away Walkover with Hullbridge Sports Res conceding their match, which means Wakering stay third but are level on points with Hashtag Utd Development above them.
