Season Review 2019-20: Essex Olympian League Division One [EOFL SR 19/20 27.4.20]

Hello and welcome to the fifth piece of a mini-series of blog articles looking back at the ‘void’ Season 2019-20, as deemed by the FA.

In this edition, I look back at the EOFL Division One campaign, rounded out with an array of statistics compiled from the EOFL FA Full-Time website including top goal-scorers & top appearance makers in the League fixtures. I won’t shirk, I’ll get the apology in now that I didn’t see any EOFL Division One matches live, but I will try to treat it the same as the other divisions that I did see matches in (Premier, Div Two & Div Three) this season.

EOFL Division One  (as of season cut-off point of March 14th 2020)

As with all the EOFL divisions, the season was halted in mid-March 2020 before eventually being curtailed several weeks later. At the top of the standings at this point was Chingford Athletic, who continued their terrific progress up the EOFL divisions following promotion from Division Two last term. Dave Richbell’s side won fourteen of their 17 matches to end up on an impressive 43 points. In doing so, they had the best home record, winning eight of their ten matches at Town Mead [3G] and had the second-best goal-scoring record, striking the net 48 times (at a Goals per game average (Or GpG) of 2.82). The only sides to beat them this term were Old Chelmsfordians and Lakeside and the fact they had two entrants in the top five of the goal-scoring charts (see below) means they will again look for elevation next term you feel. All in all, another good campaign that chairman Lee Bowers can reflect on with pride.

In second spot were Old Chelmsfordians, six points further back on 37 points from their seventeen matches played. All season they have been a tough side to breakdown, having the fourth-best defence conceding twenty goals and are the top-scorers in the division, having plundered 54 goals (a GpG of 3.17) and to cap it off, the Chelmsford-based side also had the second-best home record, winning seven of their nine matches at Lawford Lane. Matthew Crick also topped the goal-scoring charts with 15 league goals this term. Ongar Town were third on 31 points from only eleven matches, having been blighted by weather and being in Cup action as well, particularly the Essex Premier Cup. Even so, they won ten of their matches, scoring 36 and conceding only nine times – the best in the division. They were unbeaten at their Fyfield Village Hall home as well, winning six of their seven matches there. Had the season continued, the East London side may well have caught the leaders though they can still be more than satisfied with a fine season.

Lakeside finished in fourth place, having accrued 29 points from their fifteen matches. Not bad going at all for the promoted side. It is one of those statistical quirks that six of their nine wins this season came away from their Lakeside Sports Ground 3G home. Plus, their goal-scoring and defensive records sit in mid-table, with them having the sixth-highest scoring record with 31 (GpG of 2.06) and having shelled 22 goals, the sixth-best in Division One. Highly-rated forward Drew Klessa-Smith was again their top league goal-scorer with eight goals and they can look forward to another good campaign next term. Another side in the Chelmsford area finished fifth, in Galleywood. They got 24 points from their fifteen outings, though they won six of those and only lost three times. In an interesting stat twist, they were the lowest scorers of anyone in the top seven sides (with 23 strikes this term), whilst also having the fifth-best defensive record with 20 goals conceded. Going from that, they are a tough side to defeat and will look to maintain that going into the next campaign.

A point further back in sixth were Rayleigh Town Reserves, under the leadership initially of Lee Bunn and Dan Williams before the latter’s departure meant Bunn took sole charge in the last couple of months or so. They improved on a bottom-two finish in 2018/19, having won seven of their 13 matches to end up on 23 points. They were not a dull side to follow, having struck the net thirty-five times (at a GpG of 3.18) but also shelled 30 goals themselves and it was perhaps the latter that hindered them from achieving a top-four finish, though it’s worth noting they did have matches in hand on most of their rivals. The Town second-side also were unbeaten in their last five matches so they will be optimistic that they will have a decent season again next time around. They were six points clear of Shoebury Town in seventh, who ended a mixed season to put it mildly with seventeen points from 18 matches. They only won three matches, though they did also draw a league-high of eight matches as well. The mixed theme continues as Shoebury struck 38 times this term (a GpG of 2.11), only to concede 49 goals at the other end, the third-worst in the division. On a better note, star forward Dominic Binns again was their highest goal-getter, grabbing eleven goals this season so congratulations to him. Plaudits also go to Mitchell Odd and Matthew Smith, the other two Town players in the top goal-scorers chart this term with six goals apiece.

Next in the standings were another club affected by weather and Cup action in FC Hamlets, who got 15 points from their eleven matches, after a three-point deduction for fielding an ineligible player. On a happier note, Ashley King’s side had the second-best record defensively, only shelling twelve goals in their league season, as well as another fine in the London Junior Cup, which saw them make the Final once again. It is impossible to leave out a mention for the 2018-19 Division One Top goal-scorer Charlie Heatley, who added a further ten goals this term. Respect to you Charlie. I would also like to wish departing player-boss Ashley King well as social media reports indicate he will move on in the summer. Snaresbrook are two points behind their fellow East London side in ninth, having reached thirteen points from their ten matches, as the weather heavily impacted their fortunes. Their management will probably look to the point that they scored nineteen goals in their matches this term, the second-most goal-shy this term. Ramsden Scotia are a point further back in tenth spot, having been deducted two points as well. They finished fifth in the previous season though the Billiericay-based side had more problems going forward this term, scoring eighteen goals in their 15 games (GpG of 1.20) – the lowest in the division. Their top-scorer Jamie Auvache (6 goals) deserves a mention too for preventing a worse outcome there.

Into the bottom four now and Manford Way had another hard campaign following relegation from the Premier Division in 2018-19. They finished in eleventh spot with 11 points from their fifteen matches (after being deducted two points). Unfortunately, their biggest headache this term was at the back as they conceded forty-eight goals (average of 3.20 a match) which is the fourth highest this league term. Top-scorer Joe Lovell got six of the twenty-two league goals they did strike though they will look to improve next term. In twelfth place is Herongate Athletic, who gained three points as a result of an opposition error to end on eleven points from their15 matches. Goalscoring wasn’t a particular issue for them, having scored twenty-six goals (the highest number of all the bottom six clubs) though their troubles were in defence, having conceded fifty-three times which was the division’s joint-worst record this season. Two wins all campaign really lends itself to the feeling they will want to improve next term. Below them are Runwell Sports in 13th after a very hard campaign for outgoing manager Jason Emery, who will concentrate on being Chairman next season. Sports grabbed ten points from their 14 matches though in fairness, they did show glimpses of improving form both in the league and in Cups in the second part of the season. They may have got themselves higher in the standings given the big number of matches they had to play and in another anomaly, they only conceded 26 goals, the best defensive record of the bottom six sides.

Finally, Toby prop up the table in last place, having gained seven points in their 18 matches. One win all season (which was against rivals Herongate Athletic in early February) almost tells the tale sadly for the previous season’s Div Two runners-up which saw them promoted, and also conceding 53 goals did hamper their aspirations to evade the bottom two. Wish them well next campaign.

Round-up: Essex Olympian League & Cups (Sat 7 Mar) [EOFL 19/20 8.3.20]

Hello and welcome to this week’s review of Essex Olympian League action on Saturday 7 March. The weather continued to blight fixtures though there were still a lot of big matches in League & Cups that took place. Thanks for reading.

Essex Olympian League – Saturday 7 March

Premier Division

In the Premier Division, Sungate picked up a narrow 1 – 0 win at Rayleigh Town to extend their lead at the summit to six points. Buckhurst Hill can still catch them if they win five of the eight matches they have in hand on the ‘Gate. Rayleigh remain in seventh spot. Meanwhile, Kelvedon Hatch rose to fifth place after a 3 – 2 win over Harold Wood Athletic in a match moved to Frances Bardsley Academy 3G in Romford. Calvin Poku, Theo Ola and Joe Gregory all netted for Hatch, with Rob Whitnell and Jack Brown-Sykes scoring for Ath, who remain bottom, five points adrift of the top ten.

Shenfield AFC also secured a much-needed three points with a fine 5 – 2 win at mid-table Springfield. Ben Carroll grabbed a treble here, with Samuel Lock and Alex Tredgett also notching for AFC to send them up to 11th spot, four points clear of the bottom two.

Senior Division One

In Senior One, FC Hamlets won 2 – 0 at bottom side Toby through goals from Charlie Heatley and Jack Patten to secure their fifth league win this term, having played only 11 matches, due to postponements & Cup ties. Ashley King’s side rise to seventh spot and still have an outside chance of securing a top-four finish.

Lakeside edged to a 1 – 0 success over Runwell Sports with Jody Reynolds getting the only goal to go five points clear in fourth. Runwell remain in the bottom three. Also, Galleywood also won away from home, 2 – 0 at Ramsden Scotia thanks to strikes by Matthew Buckingham and replacement Jamie Rick, which sent ‘Wood up to fifth. Ramsden have lost three on-the-spin and remain in tenth.

Senior League Cup

In the one EOFL Senior Cup Quarter-Final tie, Catholic Utd edged to a 1 – 0 win over fellow Premier side Hutton at the Len Salmon Stadium. Jay Nash got the only goal to see the Super Hoops through to the last four.

Essex Premier Cup: Semi-Finals

In the one Essex Premier up Semi-Final that did take place at Roding Valley Sch 3G, Premier side Buckhurst Hill edged past impressive Senior One side Chingford Athletic on penalties after a pulsating 3 – 3 score-line after extra-time. Sam Sollosi netted twice for Mark Williams’ side in normal time, before Fenti Falola netted in extra time though Chingford showed their warrior spirit with Alex Gordon netting a double of his own which was added to by Gary Murray. Hill won the ensuing shoot-out 5 – 4 though this battle adds fuel to the thought that Dave Richbell’s side will be a Premier Division side next term. Congrats to both teams though it is Hill who make it through to the Final to defend their title at Billericay Town’s New Lodge on Wednesday April 11th.

Senior Division Two

Two matches survived in Senior Two, as Beacon Hill Rovers went back up to second spot with a 3 – 1 home win over Wakering Sports in the early kick-off, moved to Plume Sch in Maldon. Nathan Ruggles, Ade Adeyemi and a late Stephen Bennett spot-kick saw Rovers to a fifth straight win and are seven points off leaders Leigh Town. Corinthians also endorsed their promotion chances with a 4 – 2 win at May & Baker Res. Alfie Knight, Ollie Brickwood, John Bolton-Smith and Dan Cooksley all netted for Chris Stoneham’s side who went above their opponents into fourth place. Ryan Leavens and Ricardo Teixeira struck for Jimmy Donald’s team though their own aspirations of elevation took a dent here as they have five matches left to play.

Senior Division Three

Finally for the round-up section in Senior Three, Wakebury failed to gain ground on leaders ACD Utd as they were held 0 – 0 by Toby Res at Shoebury Park. It looks increasingly likely that Corinthians Res are the biggest threat for the title though the Berries will still want to secure a top-two finish for the best chance of promotion. Elsewhere, Lakeside Res got their third win in their last five with an important 3 – 1 win at Collier Row. This win sent ‘Side up to ninth, four points clear of the bottom two and handed Row a setback in their focus for a top-three finish.

Also, Corinthians Res handed White Ensign Res another heavy loss as Terry Rose’s side won 6 – 0 at Stambridge Memorial Ground. It was an ensemble cast of scorers with Steve Solarin, Max Hall, Ashley Webb, Ryan Woodley, George Penfold and Taner Dagyaran all on target as the hosts remain third and cut the deficit to leaders ACD to six points with three matches in hand on them. Ensign’s second side have three matches left to get out of the bottom two, they sit second-bottom and are three points away from Basildon Town Ressies.

Essex Olympian League – Saturday 15 February

Premier Division

In the Premier Division, there were surprises aplenty in the five matches that did take place. Basildon Town got a much-needed win as they defeated leaders Sungate 2 – 1 at Ilford Wanderers Rugby club. Jamie Bradbourn and James O’Brien got the crucial goals as Gareth Cleverly’s side ended a three-match losing run to rise up to 10th. The ‘Gate’s nine-match unbeaten run ended here though they still remain six points clear at the summit.

Meanwhile, Leigh Ramblers got their fifth win in their last seven matches by securing a 3 – 1 victory over Springfield at Belfairs Park. Rick Alabaster, Alfie Lindfield and Justin Hazell netted for Wayne Seal’s side as they strengthened their position in second. Buckhurst Hill put another dent in Catholic Utd’s title challenge as they won 4 – 1 at the Len Salmon Stadium. Braces for Nathan Sollosi and Fenti Falola did the damage to outweigh Harley Kee’s penalty for the Super Hoops. Hill rise back to fourth place in the standings, just six points off second spot with a number of matches in hand on the top three.

At the bottom, Bishop’s Stortford Swifts began their new era with a fine 4 – 2 win against Kelvedon Hatch at Silver Leys. Oliver Fortune, Bryn Thorpe, Danny Palmer and replacement Sipho Mtyanda all struck for Billy Cove’s new team and although Calvin Poku & Joe Gregory responded for Kelvedon, it was the Swifts who ended a six-match winless streak here to move off the bottom into 12th. Hatch drop to sixth, nine points above the bottom two. In the battle of the strugglers, Old Southendian got a huge 4 – 1 triumph over Harold Wood Athletic in a game moved to the Frances Bardsley Academy 3G, given the Harold Wood Park continues to be unavailable. Nick Henesy, Elliot Hemmings, Ed Gould and Ryan Stillwell all netted to move Connor Lane’s side up to seventh, though with the bottom half still so tight, they are still only five points above bottom side Harold Wood and have played more games than most. Chris Muir struck for Ath here though they are winless in their last four matches now.

EOFL Senior League Cup

In the one EOFL Senior Cup tie, Premier side Rayleigh Town showed what they can achieve by dismantling Senior One strugglers Toby 6 – 2 at Beauchamps Sch 3G. Bailey Moss grabbed a treble, with Paul Morris, Harry Talbot and substitute Teddy Rumsey all scoring too as Paul Higgins’ side made it through to the next round.
London Junior Cup Semi-Final

Also in their London Junior Cup Semi-Final, FC Hamlets made it to another Final with a 3 – 1 win over UCC Diaspora at Mabley Green. Player-boss Ashley King got a brace here with Charlie Heatley netting the other to ensure they will play at Haringey Borough’s Coles Park on Friday 17th April. Congratulations to all at the club on making another appearance in the Final.

Senior ONE

In Senior One,  only two matches survived the weather as Old Chelmsfordians maintained their place in second with a 3 – 1 win over Shoebury Town at Lawford Lane. Shoebury remain seventh, three points behind Galleywood who drew 1 – 1 with Runwell Sports. Max Orrin got the goal for the hosts though they haven’t won in their last four matches, while Runwell rise one place to 11th on goal difference.

Senior TWO

Senior Two was also heavily affected by the rain as only two of the five set matches were played. One of those ended up being scrapped as Leigh Town got a home walkover over struggling Ryan, who were unable to make the fixture. Town extend their lead at the summit to seven points and now need six wins from their last eight matches at present to secure the title. Ryan remain bottom, eight points off their nearest rivals, with only four matches left to play.

Also, Corinthians were made to work hard before claiming a 3 – 1 win over local rivals Rochford Town in the match I attended at Stambridge Memorial Ground. John Bolton-Smith got a double here for the hosts, with Jake Hodder getting the other goal in a wind-affected tussle. Jack Power got a well-taken consolation goal for Town, though they remain third-bottom. Senior Division Three

Finally for the round-up section, in Senior Three, ACD Utd went top of the division with a 3 – 0 success over Buckhurst Hill Res at Westlands. Player-boss Michael Wade, Connor Lambert and Shaun Farrow struck for Utd as they made it eleven matches unbeaten and are now two points ahead of Wakebury, with a further match in hand. However, both of the top two sides can still be caught by Corinthians Ressies who sit 3rd & Collier Row in fifth as they both have a number of matches in hand.

Elsewhere, Basildon Town Res defeated Toby Res  1 – 0 in a match moved to the Hannakins Farm Community Centre 3G. This win lifts Town to ninth, while also damaging Toby’s second-side’s promotion aspirations. Also, Leigh Town Res got a  2 – 1 success at Lakeside Res to head up to sixth spot though they are eight points off the top four.

Saturday 8 February

Premier Division

In the Premier Division, Sungate lead the division by nine points after a 3 – 2 win at Old Southendian. OS led at the break thanks to goals by Riley Oliver and Daniel Flack, though after the interval, a brace from Jonathan Ogunsanya and one from Danny Lopes turned the tide and ensured they left with the points. Meanwhile, it was a bad day for three of the ‘Gate’s rivals. Leigh Ramblers ere the only one of the top five before the weekend who won, as they defeated fellow title-chasers Buckhurst Hill 2 – 0, thanks to strikes by Andrew Webster and Pat Cannon. Wayne Seal’s side rise to second after their fourth win in their last six matches. Hill lost for the first time since the opening day f the campaign though still have seven matches in hand on the leaders, though they have 15 points to make up. Kelvedon Hatch rose to fifth after a fine 3 – 1 win over Catholic Utd to achieve a third straight win. Canning Town also won 3 – 1, at home to Springfield to get their third win in their last five matches to rise to seventh spot. The pressure is still on for them to accrue points though given they have five matches remaining this term.

Also, in their bottom of the table clash, Shenfield AFC edged to a 3 – 2 triumph over Harold Wood Athletic. Ben Absolon, Ben Carroll and Mitchell Day all scored for Shenfield with an OG and one from Adam Farley accounting for Ath’s goals. Shenfield rise up to 10th spot, while Harold Wood remain second-bottom.

Senior Lge Cup

In the one Senior League Cup tie this weekend, Division Four side Roydon pulled off a surprise 5 – 2 win over Premier Division side Basildon Town at Paringdon Sports Club. Braces from Lewis Watson and Sam Bentley were added to by Mo Benzid as the hosts went through to the next round. Keith King and Tommy Green struck for Town but they exited on a ‘bad day at the office’ for Gareth Cleverly’s side.

 

Senior ONE

Moving into Senior One now and leaders Chingford Athletic extended their lead at the summit to nine points with a 4 – 1 away win at Toby. Goals from Sam Coe, Garry Murray plus substitutes Trevor Harding and Lee Lashley got Dave Richbell’s side their eighth win in their last ten games. At the bottom, Snaresbrook rose to 11th spot with a fine 4 – 1 success at Ramsden Scotia. Drew Barbier, Nana Boachie, Daniel Walsh and Eric Kelly were all on target for ‘Brook who got their third win in nine matches this term.

Meanwhile, Ongar Town maintained their unbeaten run this term with a 3 – 1 win over Runwell Sports. Aaron Blair, Harry Rawlins and Jack Zielinski all hit the net for Town, with Joe Olley getting the goal for Runwell. Town rise to third place and still have matches in hand on the top two. Sports drop to third-bottom. FC Hamlets got the stat of the day though with a 7 – 1 win at out-of-form Herongate Athletic. Charlie Heatley got six goals himself for Hamlets, with Roy Hallowell getting a goal on his debut as Hamlets rise to 8th place, though have only played nine matches. Old Chelmsfordians were held 1 – 1 by Galleywood though remain second, while Lakeside drew 2 – 2 with Shoebury Town. Charlie Ashpole and Drew Klessa-Smith netted for ‘Side though they fell to fourth while Town remain seventh.

Senior TWO

In Senior Two, two of the five set matches were played. Leigh Town were given a tough test before coming through to win 3 – 2 against Old Southendian Res at John Burrows Rec. Shane Cooper’s double & one from Sam Irvine were enough to outweigh strikes by Luke Stillwell and Daniel Dowd and remain unbeaten this term. Ben Manley’s side also suffered a setback as skipper Oliver Tatton-Bennett suffered a suspected broken collarbone in this contest, we wish him well in his recovery.

Elsewhere, AS Rawreth got a good 3 – 0 over fellow strugglers Ryan at the Warren. Louis Hill, Rhys Willson and Bradley Pike all netted as the hosts grabbed their second win this term. Five straight defeats means Ryan remain bottom of the standings.

Senior Division Three

Into Senior Three, and with leaders Wakebury not in action, ACD Utd cut their lead at the summit to one point with a 1 – 0 win over Hutton Res at Westlands. Paul Mangan got the only goal here as ACD are now unbeaten in ten matches. Corinthians Res also won, 3 – 2 at Buckhurst Hill Res to remain third. Steve Solarin, George Brown and replacement Max Hall all scored for Terry Rose’s side. Hill’s Ressies stay 7th. Collier Row also won this weekend, 2 – 0 against Basildon Town Res in a match moved to Robert Clack 3G in Dagenham. Row fortify fifth spot after their eighth win this term.

Finally, Toby Res remained fourth as they won 2 – 1 at White Ensign Res, with the latter staying second-bottom, seven points off the top eight.

Hello and welcome to this week’s Essex Olympian League round-up, looking at all the action from Saturday 25th January. There were battles at both ends of the Premier Division as well as big games in the divisions below that.

Saturday 25 January

Premier Division

As we usually do, we start in the top-tier. In their top of the table showdown, Buckhurst Hill were held to a goalless draw by rivals Sungate, in a match seen my Non-League Correspondent ‘DW’. His video clips are available via his Twitter feed sat @essexfootie. Also, Leigh Ramblers  got a fine 4 – 1 win at struggling Bishop’s Stortford Swifts. Charlie Portway netted for Swifts though that was outdone by goals for the Rams by Andrew Webster, Ryan Lowe , Pat Cannon and Dan Williams wich in turn secured the visitors their fourth win in their last games and rise to second spot, six points off leaders Sungate. Shenfield AFC also grabbed a hugely-important triumph as they won 4 – 1 at Canning Town. Alex Tredgett’s brace led the strugglers on the path to victory, with Ben Caroll and Samuel Lock also on target to send them up two places to 12th. Canning stay in eighth spot but only have seven matches remaining to play this season and they are only three points clear of the bottom.

Finally for the Premier, in the match I attended at Garon Park, Old Southendian got a big 4 – 0 win over title challengers Catholic Utd. Nick Henesy struck twice, with Nico Dubouchet and Ryan Stillwell’s also on target as OS ended a a four-match winless run in some style to rise to 10th. The ‘Super Hoops’ have lost their last three matches now and drop to 3rd and are vulnerable by the sides immediately below them in Buckhurst Hill, Springfield and Rayleigh Town who all have matches in hand on Dan Trenkel’s side. EOFL Senior ONE

In Senior One, FC Hamlets defeated fellow mid-table side Shoebury Town 2 – 0, thanks to goals from John Gilroy and Charlie Heatley to move up to ninth, though Ashley King’s side have still only played eight matches in the league thus far, so a busy next three months or so beckons. Leaders Chingford Athletic won again, 3 – 0 at top five side Galleywood, thanks to a treble by Lee Lashley. Dave Richbell’s side lead the division by ten points, though their rivals all have a number of matches in hand on them. Old Chelmsfordians remain second after a thumping 6 – 1 success over Herongate Athletic at Lawford Lane. Ongar Town rise to third after a fine 4 – 0 home win over Manford Way which preserves their unbeaten record this term.

EOFL Senior TWO

In what was a mixed day for the top five in Senior Two, leaders Leigh Town were untroubled as they won 3 – 1 at home to Harold Wood Athletic Res at John Burrows Rec. Harry Payne, Daniel Driscoll and Brodie Horne all struck to give Jack Pearman’s side a sixth consecutive league triumph and go three points clear at the summit. May & Baker Res defeated fellow high-flyers Old Southendian Res as Jmmy Donald’s side came out 2 – 1 winners. Michael Agha and Darren Seymour strikes overturned David Stubbs’ strike for the OS side and went five points clear in 4th. Ben Manley’s OS side saw their eleven-match unbeaten streak end here though they remain 2nd, a point clear of Beacon Hill Rovers, who impressively won 3 – 2 at rivals Corinthians. A George Davis double and one from Adefunbi Adeyemi was enough to secure Rovers a sixth win in their last seven matches to stay 3rd. Chris Stoneham’s side drop to seventh though do have matches in hand to compensate for their dip in form of late.

Wakering Sports also won, 2 – 0 at home to out-of-form Epping Town. Ryan Gregory and Ben Rowe strikes were enough to give Sports a second win in their last seven outings. Epping remain fifth on goal difference after a frustrating afternoon. Laindon Orient are level on points with Town in sixth following a 6 – 0 win at home to beleaguered Ryan. Skipper James Shadwell got a treble with Carlos Dias, Jordan Walsh and Ashley Blackburn also on the score-sheet in a resounding win for Neil Blackburn’s team.

Senior Division Three

An explosive day of Senior Three action saw 37 goals scored in just five matches. Wakebury remain four oints clear at the summit after a 4 – 2 triumph at White Ensign Res. Charlie Little got another brace for Matt Cardy’s side, with Liam Jarrett and Harry Kateley also on the scorer’s sheet to make it four straight wins though with five matches remaining to play, the onus will soon turn to their rivals as they seek to gain ground on the EOFL newcomers. ACD Utd still lead the chasing pack in second place, after an enthralling 6 – 4 win over Basildon Town Res at Westlands. Player-boss Michael Wade got a treble here, with Connor Lambert also netting twice and Sam Payne also chipping in. Grant Cumming hit two for Bas, with Ryan Morgan and Lewis Wynne also on target though they remain second-bottom.

Corinthians Res also got back to winning ways with a narrow 4 – 3 win at bottom side Hullbridge Sports ‘A’. Max Hall’s hat-trick and one from Ashley Webb was enough to outdo home goals from William Bray, Tom Ranger and replacement Joseph Darby and remain third, six points ahead of Collier Row. Lakeside Res got their third win in their last four games with a 4 – 2 success at mid-table Toby Res. Salem Said got a brace, with Brandon Booty’s spot-kick and Damilola Olusanya also contributing. Toby’s second-side responded through Dean Maguchu and Marc Porter-Brown strikes though it is four losses on-the-bounce for them as they stay fifth, 11 points adrift of ACD in second.

Also, Buckhurst Hill Res rose to seventh with a 5 – 3 victory over fellow mid-table side Leigh Town Res. Tommy Fraine grabbed a treble to keep up his impressive form in front of goal, with Landry Gogoa also netting for the Hill second-side.

Hello and welcome to another of my round-up articles on my blog, looking at the action from the Essex Olympian League divisions & Cup action on Saturday 11th January. As ever, we have a round-up of the top four tiers plus a bonus section on the various Cup action, plus results from Senior Divisions Four & Five.

Saturday 11 January

Premier Division

As ever, we begin with the Premier Division, as Springfield dazzled their way to a 7 – 1 win over Basildon Town to take them up to fourth in the process, six points off leaders Sungate, who also won this week, 2 – 0 at Kelvedon Hatch to extend their cushion at the top to four points. Elsewhere, Catholic Utd lost ground as they fell to a 4 – 2 loss at Canning Town. The dismissal of custodian Louis Godwin-Green just before the break ended up being the decisive factor after Aaron Baldwin’s brace had put Dan Trenkel’s side ahead early on. Town responded after the break to get their third win in their last four matches to leap up to seventh. The downer for the Beckton side is that all seven sides below them have matches in hand and they are only six points clear of bottom Shenfield in a very tight-knit part of the table.

 

Buckhurst Hill were back in league action too and won a tight match 2 – 1 at Bishop’s Stortford Swifts. James Richardson got the goal for Swifts though Hill made it five consecutive wins to keep the gap to the leaders to six points with five matches in hand. Hutton also got a late comeback win at Old Southendian. Nick Henesy had put Connor Lane’s side ahead though after Steven Sharpe’s red card had impeded their progress, goals by James Gardner and substitute George Nash late on sealed a huge win for the visitors as they rose to 8th.

Also this week, it was announced that former Laindon Orient & Rayleigh Town Reserves co-manager Dan Williams has been appointed as the new manager at Springfield. We wish him well in his new role.

 

Senior ONE

In Senior One this weekend, Galleywood got the points without playing as Manford Way were unfortunately unable to contest their match set for Clarkes Field. ‘Wood stay fourth while Manford remain in eighth. Rayleigh Town Res got a important win, 2 – 1 at Runwell Sports thanks to goals from Tom Read and James Braithwaite. The win keeps them sixth, ahead of a resurgent Shoebury Town who won again, 4 – 2 at winless strugglers Toby. Town are unbeaten in six matches and are only four points adrift of Ongar in fourth spot. Finally, Ramsden Scotia leapt up to tenth spot after a 3 – 2 success in their bottom-of-the-table clash with Herongate Athletic, who now fall to second-bottom.

 

Cup round-up

Across the ties in three Cup competitions played this weekend, we start our round-up with the Essex Premier Cup, where it wasn’t a great day for Olympian Premier sides. Chingford Athletic of Division One travelled to Premier side Rayleigh Town and won 2 – 1., thanks to strikes by Sam Coe and Tayo Olasanoye. Paul Morris got Town’s goal though their focus will be on the league now as Ath advanced. Essex Senior Reserve Division leaders Grays Athletic Res got the better of a tight match, winning 1 – 0 over Olympian Premier side Shenfield AFC.

Also, Leigh Town continued their imperious run in all competitions this season with a 2 – 0 win over Harold Wood Athletic. The Senior Two side had goals from Sam Gillmore and Max Jones to thank for sending top-tier Athletic out. Corinthians also flew the flag for the third-tier as they overpowered Premier side Leigh Ramblers 3 – 1. Nathan Dewberry was among the goals again with a double here, with John Bolton-Smith also on target. Ongar Town also won 2 – 1 at Lakeside while in the one Senior League Cup tie, Old Chelmsfordians won 2 – 0 at Hullbridge Sports ‘A’ at Lower Road and in the London Junior Cup, Senior One side FC Hamlets defeated Essex Alliance League Senior Division side Rapid Chingford 4 – 0 at Hackney Marshes.

 

Senior TWO

Five matches took place in Senior Two, with Leigh Town and Corinthians both in Essex Premier Cup action. Old Southendian Res took advantage with a decent 2 – 0 win at strugglers AS Rawreth. Andy Turner and Ben Franklin goals saw Ben Manley’s side to a fourth straight win ad with it, they rise to third spot. Beacon Hill Rovers also powered to a 5 – 1 victory over third-bottom Rochford Town to rise up to second, a point shy of leaders Leigh Town. Harold Wood Athletic Res got a crucial 1 – 0 win over Epping Town with Joe Pyne the hero to give the Ath second-side a five point cushion over the bottom three. Epping drop to sixth after May & Baker Res continued their fine form with a 6 – 0 win over second-bottom Ryan. Tyler Richardson grabbed a hat-trick here with Connor Kain, Charlie Onslow and Michael Agha all also hitting the net to give Jimmy Donald’s side a fourth consecutive success and rise to fifth in the standings.

Laindon Orient are seven points clear in seventh after a 2 – 1 win at fellow mid-table side Wakering Sports. Mohammed Sesay got the goal for Sports though strikes by teenager Tom Merritt and Ashley Blackburn ensured the points went with the visitors.

 

Senior Division Three

On a day of contrasting fortunes for the top five, ACD Utd breezed past Lakeside Res, winning 4 – 0, thanks to a brace from Michael Wade plus goals by Brad Falco and Billy Wren which in turn secured Utd their fifth straight win to go back into second spot. Collier Row edged fellow high-flyers Toby Res 1 – 0 in a match moved to Toby’s Newbury Park ground. Row retain fifth spot and went level on points with their opponents here though Toby stay above them by virtue of a better goal-scoring record.

Hutton Res also won this weekend, as they defeated Buckhurst Hill Res 3 – 2 in a lively encounter at Polo Fields. The goal-scorers were exactly the same as last weekend, with Sean O’Callaghan endorsing his goal-scoring touch with another brace here and George Wickings picked up another goal as well. It is five wins on-the-bounce now for the Hutton side which sees them up to sixth. The Hill second-team have lost three on-the-spin and remain eighth, though they do have more matches to play than the sides around them.

At the bottom, Basildon Town Res  got only their second win this term with a narrow 1 – 0 triumph win over White Ensign Res. Grant Cumming got the only goal as the hosts went up one to tenth. Finally, Wakebury maintained their good run with a 3 – 1 home win over Corinthians Res at Shoebury Park in the match I attended. Max Hall put Terry Rose’s side ahead moments after the restart, though left empty-handed as a brace from Charlie Little and one from Ben Munday completed the comeback and ended the Corinthians’ side’s unbeaten league run this term. Matt Cardy’s side are four points clear at the summit though all their rivals have at least three games more to play. Saturday 12 October 2019

Premier Division

As always, we start with the Premier Division and Leigh Ramblers defeated Basildon Town 4 – 0 thanks to a brace from Rhys Fatt, one of which was a 25-yard cracker plus strikes by skipper Ryan Lowe and Sam Mountstephens. The Rams are now unbeaten in their last three matches and rise to fourth spot. Meanwhile, Canning Town got a rare away win, 3 – 2 at Bishop’s Stortford Swifts and Sungate defeated Harold Wood Athletic 4 – 1 at Ilford Wanderers Rugby club thanks to Zach Davidson’s brace plus goals by Reece Clarke and Jake Clarke. Chris Muir got Ath’s consolation though their inconsistent season thus far continues while the ‘Gate rise to fifth.

 

Senior Division One

In Senior One this week, Ongar Town took the lead spot with a 2 – 1 triumph at Manford Way. Aaron Blair and Harry Rawlins got the goals as Town made it five wins from five games. Joe Lovell struck for Manford though they fell to their third loss in their last four here. Old Chelmsfordians handed Chingford Athletic a 4 – 2 defeat to get their second win in three matches. Matthew Crick grabbed a brace with Harry Green and Max Johnson also netted for the OC’s. Eric Kelly got both goals for Ath though they fell three points off the top spot, having lost their 100% start.

FC Hamlets went up to seventh following a 3 – 1 success at home to Runwell Sports. John Gilroy, Charlie Heatley and player-manager Ashley King all netted for the East London side, while Charlie Adams netted for Sports who have one win in five matches.

Also, Galleywood were held 2 – 2 by Rayleigh Town Res. Strikes by Sam Donn and substitute Ditmir Doci put ‘Wood ahead though late goals by Rodney Wilson and Sam Lake meant Lee Bunn & Dan Williams’ side left with a point. Galleywood sit fourth while Town are a point behind in sixth. Ramsden Scotia also triumphed this weekend, winning 2 – 1 at home to Toby, which was their first win this term and puts them 11th while Toby remain bottom. Ramsden’s goals came via Ryan Leddra and Matthew Taylor, with Ben Britton scoring for Toby.

 

Senior Division Two

Now moving into Senior Two and Leigh Town continued their flawless start to the season with a 4 – 2 win over Rochford Town at the John Burrows Recreation Ground. Doubles for Max Jones and Sam Gillmore overpowered a brace from Harry Ford for Rochford.

Leigh went top as Corinthians were held 1 – 1 by Old Southendian Res at Garon Park. Jake Hodder struck for the visitors who ended up with ten men and drop to second. Ben Franklin got the goal for Ben Manley’s side who sit seventh. Laindon Orient went up to third with a 4 – 1 success at home to out-of-form AS Rawreth. Conor Cobb, Henry Ballard, Ashley Blackburn & an OG all contributed to Laindon’s third win in their last four.

Beacon Hill Rovers are fifth after a 5 – 1 away win at strugglers Ryan, thanks largely to Adebolu Adeyemi’s hat-trick plus strikes by Charlie Monti and Will Simpson. Rovers have won four on-the-spin now. Also, Harold Wood Athletic Res defeated May & Baker Res 4 – 0 with Warren Taylor notching twice and Joe McBurney and Joe Pyne also on target here to get their first win in four matches.

 

Anagram Records Trophy

In the Anagram Records Trophy action this weekend, Buckhurst Hill secured their place in the next round with a 4 – 2 win at Cuffley. Fenti Falola, Suley Zuhdu, Liam Foster and Josh Banfield were all on target for Mark Williams’ team. Shenfield AFC sealed a fine 7 – 0 win over The61FC (Luton) at St Martin’s School’s 3G pitch. Jordan Elliott led the way with four goals on his own, plus Ben Carroll, Mitchell Day & Luke Williamson also struck for the hosts here.

Epping Town went out of the competition to Hampton Town on the spot-kick lottery, having fought back to 3 – 3 after extra time. Strkes by Daniel Garfinkle, Brad Gayer and Taner Dagyaran gave Billy Cove’s side a shot though ultimately they went down as Hampton won 8 – 7 on penalty kicks.

 

Senior League Cup

In the one Senior League Cup tie that went ahead at the Len Salmon Stadium, Catholic Utd thrashed Kelvedon Hatch  6 – 0 with Ellis Sands scoring twice plus Aaron Baldwin, Thomas Kearney, Corey Wood and Franklin Craik all added one each. As the ‘Super Hoops’ made it into the next round with some style.

In another fairly quiet weekend of Premier action, Basildon Town got a fourth win of the season as they defeated Sungate 2 – 1, thanks to goals from Tommy Green and Keith King. Buckhurst Hill were surprisingly held 2 – 2  by Shenfield AFC at Roding Lane. Nathan Sollosi and Suley Zuhdu netted for Mark Williams’ team though Mitchell Day and substitute Liam Snellin strikes levelled things up for ten-man AFC who had Sam Bubb dismissed. Also, Kelvedon Hatch were held 1 – 1 by Rayleigh Town at New Hall. Johnathan Glowacki’s penalty for Hatch was matched by Bailey Moss’ goal for Town as both sides continued their fine starts to the campaign.

 

EOFL Senior One

In another truncated league programme in Senior One due to the Senior League Cup matches, Lakeside went third with a 2 – 0 win at Snaresbrook. Herongate Athletic got their much sought-after first win this term in the league as they triumphed 5 – 2 at Ramsden Scotia. Substitute Jack Wilson-Jones scored twice, with Glen Jordan, Ben Warren and Scott Williams also all on the score-sheet. Kurt King and replacement Tony Hollis struck for Scotia though they drop to second-bottom having only amassed one point in five matches.

Also, Runwell Sports got their first win in the league with a 4 – 1 success over Manford Way. Joe Olley hit a brace alongside goals from Jordan Gregory and Charlie Adams to send Runwell up to tenth place. Manford’s consolation came via Olajide Yusuff though their afternoon was blighted further as Russell Wilks was sent off.

 

EOFL Senior Two

Only one match took place in Senior Two, though it did yield a surprise as Beacon Hill Rovers defeated Corinthians 4 – 1 thanks to braces by Stephen Bennett and George Davis, which gave Rovers their third straight league win and end the visitors’ 100% start.

 

EOFL Senior League Cup

In the Senior League Cup, Senior One side FC Hamlets won 3 – 2 at Senior Two side Epping Town thanks to strikes by John Gilroy, Charlie Heatley and Jack Potten. Epping replied through Alex Paraskeva and Eben Rowledge before Paraskeva had to deputise for injured goalkeeper Brad Molloy, who was forced off. Laindon Orient produced one of the shocks of the round as they defeated Senior One side Shoebury Town 4 – 2 after extra time. Jasper Read and Ashley Blackburn got the goals in normal time as it finished 2 – 2, though Conor Cobb and Blackburn’s second saw them to a fine win away from home.

Meanwhile, Senior One side Toby edged Senior Two side Wakering Sports 2 – 1 at Cupid’s. Peter Spicer and Nick Harvey struck for Toby while Craig Paton replied for Sports though the visitors went through. Finally for the round-up, Senior Four side Roydon secured a big shock, defeating Premier side Canning Town, 6 – 5 on penalty kicks after a 4 – 4 draw after extra-time.

Tommy Fraine and former Canning Town forward Sulaiman Massaquoi were on target for Hill’s second side while Sam Rowe got the goal for the home team. Also, Collier Row defeated White Ensign Res 2 – 1 at the Forest Row Centre to maintain their 100% start to their campaign.

Hello and welcome to this week’s Essex Olympian League round-up, covering the top tier all the way to the results from Senior Division Four and the Essex Junior Cup. Thanks for reading.

 

Premier Division

In a reduced schedule of Premier matches, Catholic Utd got back to winning ways with a 1 – 0 win over Canning Town at the Len Salmon. Billy Boag got the goal that decided that match. Also, Old Southendian got their first win of their campaign with a 2 – 1 success over high-flyers Springfield. Nicolas Dubouchet was the hero with both goals for Connor Lane’s side. Kelvedon Hatch also got their fourth straight league win, defeating Hutton 2 – 1 at Polo Fields.

EOFL Senior League Cup

Basildon Town booked their passage to the next round of the Senior League Cup  with a 3 – 2 win at Shenfield AFC. Brodie Horne, Keith King and Jimmy Markham were on target for Gareth Cleverly’s team at St Martin’s School 3G.

 

EOFL Senior ONE

In Senior One, Chingford Athletic continued their unbeaten league start with a 3 – 0 win at Lakeside. Alex Gordon nabbed two and Lee Lashley got the other as they sit 2nd, below Ongar Town who defeated winless Ramsden Scotia 4 – 2 at Fyfield Village Hall to lead the standings on goal difference. Galleywood sit third after a fine 4 – 0 win at home to Snaresbrook. Luke Osborne, Tyler Tredgett, Sam Donn and replacement Max Orrin consigned ‘Brook to their first league loss this term. Rayleigh Town Res were back on song with a 3 – 1 win over Runwell Sports at London Road. Sam Lake struck twice with Rodney Wilson getting the other as Runwell are pointless from their opening three matches.

Manford Way are fifth after edging to a 4 – 3 triumph at home to strugglers Herongate Athletic. Joe Lovell got two goals for Manford, with Tom Gibbings and Tyler Le Poidevin also netting for the hosts who ended up with ten men. Shoebury Town were held 3 – 3 by Old Chelmsfordians while FC Hamlets had John Gilroy and a George Oakey spot-kick to thank for a 2 – 0 home win against Toby at Hackney Marshes which was their first win this term.

 

EOFL Senior TWO

Now we move onto Senior Two, Epping Town went top of the table with a hard-fought 1 – 0 win over Harold Wood Athletic Res at Stonards Hill. Connor Hammond got the goal in that match. For once, Town were upstaged on the goal-scoring front though as second-placed Corinthians hammered Westhamians 12 – 0 at Fairlop Oak Playing Fields. Nathan Dewberry grabbed six of those all by himself, with Jake Hodder adding a hat-trick. Sammy Ayres, Brad Smith and Jake Long all netted as well for Chris Stoneham’s side.

Laindon Orient sit fourth after being held 1 – 1 by Wakering Sports. Craig Paton gave Sports the lead before Ricky Bowyer levelled to seal a point. May & Baker Res had an away day to remember as they won 7 – 2 at Rochford Town. Isaac Eghudele got two, as did Perry with Afolabi, Smith and Agba also among the scorers here. Alex Jenkins and Joe Lovett netted for Rochford though they fell to defeat. Old Southendian Res won 2 – 1 at Ryan. Luke Stillwell and Oliver Tatton-Bennett were the scorers as their hosts stay bottom following a points deduction earlier this month. Also, Beacon Hill Rovers won 2 – 0 at AS Rawreth to go into sixth spot.

 

Essex Senior THREE

Senior Three was fairly quiet this wek due to the Essex Junior Cup action, with Wakebury getting the stand-out result, defeating Lakeside Res 5 – 3 at Shoebury Park. Harry Kateley netted twice for the home side, with Daniel Buglione, Liam Jarrett and Sam Rowe also on target. Brandon Booty’s penalty, Harry Davison and Ben Austin accounted for the Lakeside second-string’s goals though they couldn’t deny Wakebury a third win this term.

Toby Ressies handed Hullbridge Sports ‘A’ a fifth straight loss as they won 2 – 0, thanks to Alfie Sayers and Marc Porter-Brown goals. Toby’s second side rose to second as ACD Utd were held 2 – 2 by Leigh Town Ressies. Sam Payne and Frankie Markham scored for Utd though their 100% start is over. Chris Pope and substitute Ben Forsyth struck for Town though they are winless in their last three matches. Buckhurst Hill Reserves got the points without playing as hosts Dagenham Utd had to withdraw due to being unable to field a side.

Hello and welcome to this week’s extended round-up of Essex Olympian League action, which includes matches from the top four division, plus a round-up from the Senior League Cup action and results from Senior Division Four and the Reserve League Cup action this weekend – Saturday 7th September. Thanks for reading.

 

Premier Division

As ever we start in the top-tier, as Buckhurst Hill re-opened the refurbished Roding Lane ground with a 4 – 0 win over Basildon Town. Suley Zuhdu’s penalty gave Mark Williams’ side the half-time advantage. Zuhdu struck again after the break and Sam Sollosi got two late goals to give Hill the win on their special day. Rayleigh Town remain top though after a 4 – 3 triumph at Harold Wood Athletic, despite playing nearly an hour with ten men. Reiss Kingsley got all three goals for Ath. Paul Morris netted for Town before being given his marching orders though one from Harry Talbot and a brace from substitute Bailey Moss did the business for Paul Higgins’ team.

Bishop’s Stortford Swifts won 3 – 2 at Canning Town while Kelvedon Hatch defeated Leigh Ramblers 3 – 2 at home. Ryan Lowe and Dan Williams notched for the Rams though their away-day stretch without a win continued. Hutton also notched three points with a 3 – 2 success over Old Southendian, who responded through Ed Gould and Mattias Tonking. Sungate also got a third win in four league matches by defeating Shenfield AFC 2 – 1.

Finally for this division, Springfield handed Catholic Utd a rare loss as the hosts won 1 – 0, thanks to Joe Nathanson’s solitary goal.

 

Senior Division One

Senior One saw three matches this weekend. Manford Way won their first match back in the division with a 2 – 0 success at Ramsden Scotia. Joe Lovell as among the scorers there while Ongar Town won 6 – 0 at Shoebury Town and Snaresbrook also won 2 – 1 at Rayleigh Town Ressies.

 

EOFL Senior League Cup 2019-20

In a myriad of Cup action, AS Rawreth won through, 2 – 1 over Newbury Forest Reserves thanks to two goals from Harry Barham. Epping Town defeated Div Two rivals Corinthians  2 – 1 after extra-time, thanks to goals by Joe Thomas and Joey May. Also, Herongate Athletic progressed with a 2 – 1 triumph at Laindon Orient with Jordan Martyn and Glen Jordan on target for Ath.

FC Hamlets breezed through to the next round with a 6 – 0 home win over Rochford Town. John Gilroy got a treble, with Kevin Baudrier, Ishmael Carter and Darren Serrano-Griffiths all on target. Westhamians hit six past Forest Glade in a 6 – 1 away win. John Massala got five of them, with Shakim Thomas getting the other strike as the visitors went through.

Roydon sent Ryan crashing out as the Div Four side won 4 – 1. Aymen Mekni got a double here, while Lewis Watson and Scot Bown also struck. Hullbridge Sports ‘A’ also went through, following a 2 – 1 win at Leytonstone Utd. William Bray and Billy Carter got the goals as ‘Bridge’s third-team went through. Meanwhile, Toby also advanced as goals from Tolu Dina and Peter Spicer saw them win 2 – 1 at White Ensign Ressies.

Senior Division Two

We head back into League action now with Senior Division Two. Beacon Hill Rovers defeated Harold Wood Athletic Res 3 – 0 with goals from Will Simpson, Stephen Bennett and Lewis Sherwood assisting Rovers to their opening win this term. Also, Leigh Town won 4 – 0 at May & Baker Res with Shane Cooper, James Roberts, Tom Byford and Sam Gillmore on the score-sheet as Town got their third consecutive league win.

 

Senior Division Three

In Senior Three, Wakebury won their opening match in the Olympian League with a 3 – 1 triumph at Basildon Town Reserves. Liam Jarrett, Oliver Laycock and Charlie Little all netted for the visitors. Alex Witham struck for the Town second-string as they have yet to win in their three league matches thus far.

Toby Reserves maintained their unbeaten streak with a 3 – 1 home success over Hutton Reserves. Marc Porter-Brown got all three of the Toby goals as he kept up his impressive scoring run early-doors this term. Elsewhere, Corinthians Reserves also got their third straight win as they won 3 – 1 against Leigh Town Reserves.
