An additional match on Sunday saw a welcome return to watching local Women’s football as Corinthians Ladies welcomed bottom side Southminster Utd Ladies to Stambridge Memorial Ground. Daniel Mann’s side started a very busy remainder of the league campaign here and named Zoe Brown as their goalkeeper, with a defence of Nickie Williams, Nicola Murphy, Sarah Murphy and Shantelle Gamble. The midfield included Ashleigh Dorrington-Harvey, skipper Danielle Dorrington-Harvey, Rachael Selfe and Claire Campbell, supporting a forward line led by Ashley Debnam & Fran Murphy. Southminster were still looking for their first points this term, and had Jade Oyler as their custodian, with a defence comprised of Leah Anstey, Carly Willis, Emma Barringer & Shannon Thomas. Their energetic midfield featured Amy Day, Charlotte Pestell, Christie Lucking and Emily Mackler. Amy Yeldham and Cerys Cook led the attack.
Before we got underway, there was a moment’s silence, remembering former Southminster Utd Ladies boss Liam Phillips, who is much missed by all his family & friends. My thoughts remain with them. He would have been proud of the way Southminster began this game, as they had more possession and pushed the hosts back at times. There wasn’t that many clear-cut chances , but Amy Yeldham & Cerys Cook were both utilising their pace to test the hosts’ defence. As the first half went on, Corinthians gradually had more ball time and showed some neat passing, however the Utd defence was dealing with the battle admirably.
Around the half-hour mark, Yeldham’s good pass found the run of hard-working midfielder Emily Mackler, though the latter’s strike fizzed past Zoe Brown’s near post. Yeldham & Cook also had glimpses at goal for Southminster before the break, as they showed commendable work rate & application given their current league position.
Half-Time: Corinthians 0 – 0 Southminster
The second half started with a good spell for the hosts, as they forced a half-dozen corners in as many minutes. Substitute Marie Barker had a decent chance at goal which wasn’t far wide for the hosts, which served as a warning to Utd which they didn’t heed. Southminster forced a good save out of Brown, from Yeldham’s good effort, which the Corinthians stopper parried round the post. Corinthians took the lead on 66 minutes as a good strike by forward Ashley Debnam from the left side of the 18-yard box found the net, despite Southminster custodian Jade Oyler getting a hand on it.
It was a tough goal to concede for Southminster, and it got harder on 82 minutes, as a good ball in by Shantelle Gamble was cleared into the path of replacement Katy Judd and the ball trickled in after wrong-footing Oyler, to give the hosts a much-needed two-goal advantage. The visitors kept going well but the facet of the game that thwarted them today was being unable to take their chances. That being said, their high-energy performance made it difficult for the hosts to settle and if they maintain this performance level, I think they will gather points before season’s end.

In summary, this was a very hard-fought win for Corinthians, though you have to give due credit to the high work rate & decent play from the Southminster side, who did not look a side having a hard time this term. There was a little fortune that aided the home side in the manner of the goals, though to be fair, Daniel Mann’s side kept going admirably and took advantage of a good spell in the second half to claim the points.
There were several good performances from the Corinthians side today. Led by forward Ashley Debnam, who made several good runs down the flanks & made some good passes as well as carrying a good portion of her side’s attacking intent. Midfielder Claire Campbell also put in a good display in both defence & attack, showing good work rate and awareness. Centre-back Sarah Murphy also showed good resolve to lessen the impact of a hard-working Southminster midfield & forward line, as Myrphy made several important interceptions. Finally, substitute Marie Barker did add more energy to the hosts’ midfield, as well as making good runs from midfield as well, having several half-chances to make the margin of victory more comfortable for her team.
For Southminster, kudos has to go to hard-working forward Amy Yeldham, as she made a lot of good breaking runs down the channels to test the home defence, particularly in the first half. She also showed good passing & movement, linking up well with fellow forward Cerys Cook, who also had a good game. Cook did well to aid her team’s defending at times and got the better of the opposition midfield at times. Also, Carly Willis worked hard in central defence as well as bringing the ball out from the defence to good effect. Lastly, goalkeeper Jade Oyler was unfortunate in the manner of how the goals were conceded, but made several good saves & generally was a good presence in gathering crosses.
