Hello & welcome to the latest of my occasional series, looking at the three Essex Senior League matches that took place on the weekend of Saturday 12 November. We saw nine goals in the top-tier, while we also have sections on the FA Vase Round Two, the one Reserve D2 match & the Len Cordell Trophy action, with the latter featuring the Reserve sides.

Essex Senior Lge –  Saturday 12 November

The weekend’s action behigs with Ilford returning to winning ways with a 4 – 2 victory at White Ensign. Ilford were indebted to Joshua Boxall who grabbed a fine treble to give the Foxes a big advantage. Joe Lilly got the other goal for Richard Ponsford’s team. Ensign replied through goals from skipper Mitchell Stuart-Evans and new recruit Kian Bradshaw. The win takes Ilford above their opppnents here & into 13th spot. West Essex had to battle for a 1 – 0 success over Clapton at Wadham Lodge. Oliseh Okuguni was again the hero for Kwame Kwateng’s side with the winning goal midway through the second half, after good initial work by substitute David Bell. The Stags have gone four points clear in fifth.

Lastly, Halstead Town got a hugely important triumph as they won 2 – 0 at Southchurch Park. Tom White and Joel Older got the goals for Mark McLean’s side. This win takes them above Sawbridgeworth into fourth-bottom on goal difference. The majority of sides didn’t play this weekend because of the FA Vase action this weekend, but at present Enfield sit top, two points clear of FC Clacton in second, with Redbridge in third and Little Oakley in fourth spot.

Meanwhile, in the FA Vase Round Two, Athletic Newham booked their spot in Round Three with a 4 – 0 success at home to Kennington. Daniel Izekor added to his growing reputation with a fine treble here for Chris Davis’ team. Richard Kone added the other goal early in the second half as Newham took their place in the Last 64. Romford put a difficult week behind them and also progressed with a 2 – 0 triumph over divisional rivals Little Oakley, with Camilo Restrepo scoring a brace for Steve Butterworth’s side. In other results, Dunstable Town edged Enfield 1 – 0 at Creasey Park on Friday night. Lakenheath responded superbly after an early setback to defeat Buckhurst Hilll 3 – 2. Sam Hawley, a penalty from Luke Young and Thomas Thulborn’s late goal sealed te Eastern Counties Premier side’s progression. Suleyman Zuhdu had given Buckhurst the lead after 13 minutes and Nathan Sollosi added a late consolation.

Elsewhere, Norwich Utd scored two late goals to defeat Stansted 2 – 0 at Plantation Park. Haydn Davis & Thomas Hunter got those goals to break the Airportmen’s hearts. Leighton Town won 2 – 0 at Saffron Walden Town as the Bloods played their first match after the departure of long-serving boss Jason Maher this week. Finally in the Vase, Woodford Town exited on the lottery of penalties after a 2 – 2 draw with Fakenham Town at Ashton’s. Alejandro Machado got both goals for Shane Baptiste’s team but a double from Jack Robinson for the Ghosts forced a shoot-out, with Fakenham won 4 – 3.

In the the Len Cordell Trophy, Barking U23 grabbed a fine 4 – 0 triumph at Frenford Res, with Argest Nela scoring twice, with Abdul Charfi & George Fairhead also scoring. Billericay Town Ressies also won away from home, coming away with a 4 – 2 win at May & Baker Res. Joshua Brown led the way with a double, added to by strikes from Rhian Fowler and substitute Jes Oshitola. Other results in the Cordell Cup were Barkingside Res’ 2 – 2 draw with Grays Athletic Res on Friday night and Romford’s second side drawing 3 – 3 with Redridge Res at Westlands on Saturday.

We close this article with the one Reserve Division Two match that took place on Friday night, which saw Takeley Res win 2 – 1 at Southend Manor U23. Bryn Thorpe notching both goals there for Takeley’s second side, which took them level on points with leaders Barking U23.

The FA Vase Second Round Qualifying weekend was extended with a ‘bonus’ match at Park Lane as Benfleet hosted Newbury Forest in this battle of the Eastern Senior League South sides. Benfleet had regular stopper Florent Gislette between the posts, a defence comprised of centre-backs Jack Frost and skipper Cory Rider, with full-backs Martyn Lacey and Billy Carter. Taylor Lawrence and Henry Sims were in central midfield, while the forward line had Deolindo Lima and Ben Foord up too, with Mason Shave and Billy Purdy the chief support to them. Newbury Forest won on spot-kicks at Step 5 side Whitton Utd in the previous round but their league form hasn’t quite got going as yet. Long-time boss Leo Connolly had Harrison Cole as their goalkeeper, with a defence of full-backs Tony Shaw and Matt Connolly , with Ansa Edem & captain Jack Hurley in central defence. Mustafa Kahie and Mohamed Hussein were the centre midfield pair, with Anis Assoweh the creative midfielder supporting forwards Chaka Barnett, Freddie Bose and Ali Abdulkadir.

This match got going at lightning speed as Alex Salmon’s side made the most of a strong start. Barely two minutes into the game, the ball was played into the path of forward Deolindo Lima and he made no mistake tucking away a low finish past the helpless Newbury stopper Harrison Cole to opn the scoring. Newbury’s stuttering start was further exacerbated just four minutes later as tireless forward Ben Foord was brought down in the area, and referee Ka Ho Wong immediately pointed to the penalty spot. Taylor Lawrence stepped up to take the spot-kick and smashed it into the right corner, giving the unfortunate Cole another oppurtunity to pick the ball out of his net. Cole did keep his side in it arguably, as he denied Foord moments later when the striker was in one-on-one.

After that difficult start for Leo Connolly’s side, they gradually got their way into the game, lkept the ball better and with the likes of Freddie Bose, Mohamed Hussein and Chaka Barnett in the side, they soon pushed on to threaten the Benfleet goal as they did somewhat retreat, giving Forest more ball time. Newbury did take full advantage of that change in attitude as they halved the deficit on 16 minutes. From a set-piece, the ball was passed into full-back Matt Connolly’s feet and he let fly a stunning 30-yarder which surprised the home backline and the crowd as it flew into the net.

Deolindo Lima (far left) keeps ball in play early on for ‘Fleet

In some ways, Benfleet had to re-assert their game all over again as the visitors unsurprisingly had more motivation now to get back into the tie. Chances were less frequent for either side, but it’s fair to say Benfleet’s best chance came ten minutes before the break as a searching cross from the right by full-back Billy Carter found Foord at the far post and whilst his header had enough power, it didn’t quite have the accuravy as it fizzed wide of Cole’s near-side post.

Half-Time: Benfleet 2 – 1 Newbury Forest

The atmosphere was getting a little tense early oin the second half as Newbury continued to have a decent amount of possession. Benfleet did get a third goal at a crucial time, on 51 minutes. A free-kick was awarded in a promising position, but Lawrence still curled in a superb flighted effort which sailed high into the net, giving Cole little chance. That was Lawrence’s secoond goal and added to a good performance as well.

To be fair to Forest though, they didn’t really flinch at the scale of the task ahead of them, and Barnett continued to make several enterprising runs down the left channel, testing the calibre of Benfleet right-back Carter. Although they showed some promise on the ball, centre forward Ali Abdulkadir only had a couple of glimpses at goal which didn’t test Gislette unduly.

That being said, as we got into the latter stages, Forest did have a couple of half-chances, with Chaka Barnett firing over after another good darting run down the left flank, and replacement Josh Smith’s low effort had to be cleared off the goal-line. The ‘Fleet responded as Lima made another good surging run, before finding winger Mason Shave in a good position, and Shave’s strike was well-held by Cole.

There was concern at the end for Newbury as skipper Jack Hurley had to be assisted off the pitch with what looked like a bad knee injury, so I’d like to wish him well in his recovery. After a few moments of added time, the referee blew for full-time and Benfleet will be happy with their day’s work and of course, another £725 in prize money won.

Newbury full-back Tony Shaw [#2] in possession after the interval

Full-Time: Benfleet 3 – 1 Newbury Forest

In summary, Benfleet’s start to the game was crucial and while they backed off a bit after getting their two-goal lead, Newbury could not quite test home stopper Florent Gislette enough to get back into the game. Lawrence’s superb set-piece ultimately made the game safe for Akex Salmon’s side, despite Newbury’s decent approach play which certainly kept the home defence alert.

There were some really good performances in this match. For winners Benfleet, forward Deolindo Lima really put in a hard-working performance and gave the visiting defence a difficult afternoon. Lima also took his goal well early on. Midfielder Taylor Lawrence put in a good all-round shift, making good runs and passes, plus that free-kick was important at the time it came in the game. Ben Foord also did well in attack, running down the channels as well and with two in the forward line, it meant he could drop deep to set off moves, while full-back Martyn Lacey also had a good game down the left side, stretching the visiting defence more and providing good passes too.

For Newbury, winger Chaka Barnett made several good runs down the left side utilising his pace and dribbling abilities, and gave the Benfleet defence some nervous moments, and tested Gislette on a couple of occasions. Forward Ali Abdulkadir was a good presence and had glimpses of goal at times. Mohamed Hussein put in a good display in central midfield, showing good awareness and energy levels while number ten Freddie Bose also covered a lot of ground in defence and attack to assist his team, and also made some neat passes.

Strong First-half display enough to ward off West Comeback to progress in the Vase

Romford  3 – 2   West Essex

Match Report & Photos by Scott W  [Twitter: @ScottMHC14]

The FA Vase road this term continued with Romford hosting fellow Essex Senior side West Essex at Mayesbrook Park. Both sides have had signs of having productive campaigns and that’s why this tie won out. Romford named a strong team, with loanee Billy Lawlor in goal, a defensive four of Tambeson Eyong, Danny Hurford plus centre-backs George Allen and skipper Scott Doe, who was a pro at Dagenham & Redbridge several years back. The forward line was comprised of Emmanuel Robe, Charlie Morris and Jesse Olukolu, with support from Lewis Smith. West also had a near full squad to chose from. Arthur LeBlond kept the gloves, with a defence of Tyler Morgan, Joel Lamb, Emmanuel Oluwole and Tala Lo Seye. Timmy Moncur and Oliseh Okuguni were in central midfield, with Callum Bloss and David Bell in attack, supported by Pascal Thornton and skipper Cameron Gray.

As we match wore on, it was fairly clear to see that Romford’s front three (Olukolu, Robe and Morris) were lively and rapid. Jesse Olukolu in particular was a searing threat down the right side with his pace and passing. West had to overcome an early change to their backline as centre-back Emmanuel Oluwole had to hobble off, we wish him well. Substitute Sam McNally came on to replace him and was soon involved in the action. Olukolu and Smith had already had strikes at goal with LeBlond pulling off a decent save to deny Smith’s strike. Ultimately, the Blues managed to get through the Stags defence almost at will with their incisive passing and pace.

At the other end, West could not threaten the likes of Romford defenders Scott Doe and George Allen much although one good move worth noting involved forwards Cameron Gray, Pascal Thornton and Callum Bloss which ended with Bloss having a tame shot which didn’t unduly trouble Romford stopper Billy Lawlor. Romford did get the opening goal that they did merit on 27 minutes. Olukolu made another super run down the right side and got a cross in, which found Charlie Morris inside the area and a neat finish ensured Steve Butterworth’s side were ahead.

West responded almost immediately as Bloss’ free-kick brought a decent save out of Lawlor on the half-hour. Romford did double their lead though five minutes later as full-back Tambeson Eyong burst forward seeing space to run into, and he found Olukolu who was felled in the area. Kris Newby stepped up and fired the ball high into the left corner of the net. West would have been keen to dampen the momentum and get into the interval but Romford did get a third goal on the stroke of half-time, as Olukolu got the goal his performance did deserve as he got past two defenders and fired home from close range, high into the net which gave LeBlond little chance to deny him.

Half-Time: Romford  3 – 0  West Essex

Romford were good value for their commanding lead at the break as West needed quite a stirring response as the second half began. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the rapid tempo of the first half did soften somewhat though the Blues nearly had a fourth goal at the midway point of the half. Substitute Camillo Restrepo got in on goal but with only the goalkeeper to beat, LeBlond did well to deny the effort low with his feet.

West Essex did get a reply on 69 minutes as a free-kick in a good position not far outside the penalty area. Oliseh Okuguni added to his good individual performance by curling in a well-struck low strike which found the right corner, getting past Lawlor well. Romford were leaving gaps to run into at the back but they held on to keep the rejuvenated visitors at bay, until the last moments as full-back Joel Lamb sent in a fine cross from the left flank which took a deflection and trickled over the goal-line, before Gray could bag himself a tap-in.

Romford’s Hurford [#3] pushes forward late on

Soon after that second West goal, the referee blew his whistle for the last time and while there was a fractious brawl of sorts after the final whistle which saw Eyong get dismissed, the fact remained the Butterworth’s team had booked their passage through to the First Round proper of the Vase, winning another £725 in Prize money, and will get at least £250 more in next round whatever the result.

Full-Time: Romford  3 – 2  West Essex

In summary, Romford’s fine first-half performance was too strong for a disjointed West side to cope with, but the determined Stags did fight their back into the match the last 25 minutes or so. Ultimately though, Kwame Kwateng’s team had too much to do and they went out of the FA Vase here.

There were some fine performances to note in this match. For winners Romford, winger Jesse Olukolu had a fine game. Showcasing his pace and dribbling to good effect, as well as putting in dangerous crosses as well in a busy first-half. He took his goal well too, just before the break. Fellow winger Charlie Morris also had a good game and showed good positioning & composure to put his team ahead before the half-hour. Advanced midfielder Lewis Smith also really tested the visiting defence well and put some good passes forward to set up chances & lastly, Kris Newby also was a good presence in midfield.

For West Essex, midfielder Oliseh Okuguni put in another good, hard-working display in a midfield that did not have it easy. Okuguni’s fine free-kick gave his team a glimmer of hope too. Forward David Bell had a good game also and persisted well despite finding the home defence in miserly form. Midfielder Timmy Moncur put in another good shift and got into some good positions also down the channels while skipper Cameron Gray rounds out the mentions with another decent display, his crosses were a threat for the Romford backline to deal with.

West progress on Penalties after Harwich battle hard at Wadham

West Essex 0 – 0 Harwich & Parkeston (West won 5 – 3 on spot-kicks)

Match Report & Photos by Scott W  [Twitter: @ScottMHC14]

The FA Vase began for another season with an intriguing Friday night tie against Eastern Counties Division One North side Harwich & Parkeston, who reside in mid-table there in tbe early table. West have started their league campaign well but were looking to avoid a second Cup exit in a week after narrowly losing out at Dunstable Town in the FA Cup five days previously. West fielded new goalkeeper Arthur Leblond between the sticks, with a defence comprised of Sanchez Hardy, Joel Lamb, Emmanuel Oluwole and Tala Lo-Seye. Captain Reece Clarke returned after serving his recent suspension, while the forward line included David Bell, Mo Kaudeer and Marlon Ortiz. Harwuch had Brad Cook in goal, with Nathan Kioussis and Jack Wood in central defence and captain Gareth Heaty and Alfred Smith in central midfield. Centre forward Joe Boreham-Knight was supported by Luke Mayhew, Matthew Geen and Brandon Rusby.

Harwich should be commended for travelling from the North East Essex coast on a Friday night and they began the under pressure from this exuberant Stags team. In the first 10 minutes, Visiting ‘keeper Brad Cook pulled off two really good saves to deny Reece Clarke’s fierce opening strike and soon after, a decent strike by forward David Bell. Harwich were focused on their efforts defensively, however it would be a misnomer to say they didn’t push forward with some verve and pace too. Joe Boreham-Knight led the forward line well, though it was Matthew Geen’s strike that kept home goalkeeper Arthur Leblond alert, though the shot lacked the power to unduly trouble him.

The effort levels were there from the hosts though they found it difficult to create an avalanche of chances and to get past the hard-working & organised Harwich backline, led by Nathan Kioussis and Jack Wood. Wood nearly had a moment of hefty misfortune on 38 minutes as a clearing header looped not far wide of the leftside post. Moments later, a rare one-on-one chance for pacy forward Marlon Ortiz saw a well-struck effort cannon off the right-sided post with Cook beaten.

In the main though, Harwich were doing a good role of frustrating the hosts, and while they were a threat from set-plays, West stopper Leblond was largely untroubled heading into the interval.

Half-Time: West Essex 0 – 0 Harwich

For the decent crowd that turned up here (including some travelling Shrimpers fans, credit to them), the second half was more about the competitive contest to win the momentum, more than it was about a large array of chances created. That being said, Harwich & Parkeston did force a good save from West goalkeeper Leblond from close range, while a last-ditch defensive clearance soon afterward prevented them from taking a surprise lead.

Boreham-Knight was still a good outlet for the Shrimpers and his header on 72 minutes was gathered well by Leblond. The tension and urgency was rising by this point as the prospect of the dreaded penalty shoot-out did loom. With 77 minutes on the watch, a good ball in from the right flank by full-back Sanchez Hardy was pounced on by Ortiz though the path of the ball was slightly behind him so the forward couldn’t generate the power in his strike to bypass Cook, who was able to gather. Joel Lamb also struck narrowly over the goal frame from 25 yards out but despite both teams’ efforts, penalties it was.

FT (After 90 mins): West Essex 0 – 0 Harwich & Parkeston

So the neccessary spot-kick shoot-out would determine who went through to the Second Qualifying Round. In summary, West scored some good penalties and notched all five of theirs, with David Bell firing home the winning spot-kick past Harwich stopper Cook, after Harwich winger Luke Mayhew’s spot-kick was well kept out by Stags goalkeeper Arthur Leblond.

Full-Time: West Essex 0 – 0 Harwich & Parkeston (West won 5 – 3 on pens)

In summary, this hard-fought Vase tie was not blessed with a huge array of chances though it is arguable that Harwich goalkeeper Brad Cook and the defence prevented West from winning the game in the ninety minutes. The hosts were good in terms of effort levels even if they couldn’t quite create their final ball as they would have liked.

There were some good performances to note as ever. For winners West Essex, forward David Bell put in a very hard-working display and certainly did his utmost to test Harwich custodian Brad Cook and the tough visiting defence, making several good runs and getting into good positions. Midfielder Timmy Moncur was also an important player in this match for West, getting into the channels to stretch the opposition backline with a high-energy display. Lastly, centre-back Emmanuel Oluwole contributed to a home defence that did not give Harwich too many chances either, making several good interceptions and showing good positioning defensively.

For Harwich, goalkeeper Brad Cook made three terrific saves to keep his team in it before the hour mark, and his presence encouraged the resilent defence as well. Forward Joe Boreham-Knight had another fine game despite not having that much service, getting in behind the opposition full-backs and also keeping the West backline alert in a physical battle. Finally, centre-back Nathan Kioussis typified the robust attitude of his team in frustrating the Stags by anchoring the Harwich backline and restricting the amount of chances conceded.

So, West do progress to the Second Round Qualifying next month and have earned £550 in prize money (Source: The FA Website), congrats to them while Harwich have gained £160 by way of consolation. I wish the Shrimpers well for the rest of their season.

Terrific performance sees Benfleet power past ten-man Holland at Park Lane

Benfleet 6 – 1  Holland

Match Report & Photos by Scott W [Twitter: @ScottMHC14]

This weekend’s second match saw a return to Canvey’s Park Lane for a fascinating all-Eastern Senior League South tie as Benfleet welcomed Holland. The ‘Fleet were looking to advance again after knocking out Essex Senior side St Margaretsbury in the previous round. Florent Gislette was once again the goalkeeper here for the hosts, with a defensive four of Ryan Willsmer, Martyn Lacey plus centre-backs Lee Scott and Cameron Harris. The forward line was once again comprised of Billy Bonham-Dare, Ben Foord and Luc Harpon. Holland named Finlay Shorten between the posts, with a defensive unit of Tom Ayton, Rueben Cowler, Steve Downes and stalwart Joe Martin. Scott Sloots led the line here, with support from Ryan Mahon and Josh Rutter.

There were many quirks in this match. The first of them arrived barely two minutes into the contest, as an goalkeeping error by Benfleet custodian Florent Gislette allowed the advancing Scott Sloots to slot home into the left corner, much to the silent surprise of the home suppport. However, the hosts were not behind for long as little over five minutes after that, they levelled things up as a good break down the right side of the penalty box by Billy Carter ended with his pass finding forward Billy Bonham-Dare who struck home confidently past Holland stopper Finlay Shorten. At this point in proceedings, things were pretty even, with a looping header by Holland midfielder Keelan Sorrell on the edge of the 18-yard box being gathered by Gislette.

To be fair to the home side, Holland glovesman Shorten had been the busier keeper making two good saves to deny another promising performance by the Benfleet forward line, at this point. At the other end, Holland forward Sloots was a threat in the air. However, it was Benfleet who took the advantage for the first time on 28 minutes, as Carter again found the space to put in a telling pass, this time finding tireless forward Ben Foord who displayed fine technique to get the ball under control before firing home well into the right corner, giving Shorten little chance.

The Seasiders were feeling frustrated as they were limited to strikes from long-range, with Sorrell having a decent effort which sailed wide of Gislette’s left-sided post. Six minutes before the break, the visitors suffered a setback when Sloots was dismissed for adjudged to have lashed out at a home defender. Referee Samuel Everitt didn’t hesitate for a second as Sloots walked off. Things got rather worse for them before the break as moments after ‘Fleet skipper Taylor Lawrence couldn’t test Shorten when in a great position to score, the hosts did extend their lead.

Lawrence did rather make amends for that miss a few moments previously though as from a free-kick, he powered home a fine strike into the right corner past Shorten to make it three-one to the hosts. It got even better two minutes later as the Seasiders’ resolve took another hit. Bonham-Dare was adjudged to have been fouled inthe area by Shorten, with Lawrence stepping up to convert the resulting spot-kick, sending a low effort into the right corner again. Those last ten minutes of the half really upscaled the size of the visitors’ task but you have to credit the ruthlessness of Rob Polkinghorn’s side, who certainly made the most of it to put themselves in a commanding position at the interval.

Half-Time:  Benfleet  4 – 1 Holland

To their credit, the Holland unit kept going admirably, despite being reduced to ten men. Centre-back Joe Martin typified their resolve and they did enough to prevent Bonham-Dare’s header finding the net after being well found by Foord, soon after the resumption. Foord did get a second goal with 54 minutes on the stopwatch. Another good ball in found him before Foord sent a superb low finish past Shorten at his near post. Paul Phelan’s did keep their intent going but found telling counter-attacks hard to come by, with a good run by Rueben Cowler down the left flank ending with his scuffing his effort on goal wide of Gislette’s far post.

Benfleet completed the scoring on what was a memorable afternoon for them on 72 minutes with another smart forward press, involving Foord and replacement Mason Shave before being finished well by full-back Martyn Lacey who neatly tapped home from close range. By this point, Holland knew it wasn’t going to be their day though a set-piece did spin away from the path of Ryan Mahon late on. Foord still had time to create another decent chance, sending a curling effort narrowly wide of Shorten’s far post.

All in all though, it was a very strong result and performance by ‘Fleet as they continued their good form in League & Vase this term.

Ryan Mahon on the ball for Holland

Full-Time: Benfleet  6 – 1  Holland

To summarise, Benfleet’s superb performance made this a more one-sided game than many had expected. Granted that Holland’s red card did dampen the chances of them coming back into the game but they struggled to create the chances they needed after they fell behind and they found the home defence in good form as well.

There were a number of influential performances here, with two-goal Ben Foord standing out for Benfleet with his goals being good clinical finishing, as well as displaying good movement and work rate. Fellow forward Billy Bonham-Dare was also a constant presence in attack and could’ve got a second goal today. Midfielder Billy Carter delivered an energetic display as well and contributed well to his side’s forward moves, while centre-back Cameron Harris also had a fine match making several important tackles. For Holland, Midfielders Ben Dixon and Kieran Michaels showed good intent and passing as they looked to build counter-attacks, while Keelan Sorrell had a good game in anchor midfield, assisting his defence well and centre-back Joe Martin also restricted the strong Benfleet forward line as he made several telling interceptions.

Best wishes to both teams for the rest of the campaign.

Match Report & Photos by Scott W [Twitter: @ScottMHC14]

The first match after the enforced month-long break in November saw me travel to Cricklefield for this intriguing FA Vase Second Round tie between Essex Senor side Ilford and unbeaten Spartan South Midlands side Colney Heath. Ilford were missing a few of their squad for this one including both the Djotzi brothers and the likes of full-backs Bailey Pryce and Sean Ekila but lynchpin skipper Steve Sylvester was in the back four, alongside Ronnie Bullen and full-backs Charlie Hannam and Naseer Ishanzadeh. The potent front three of Dion Lewis-Kirwan, Yemi Adelani and Mo Kargbo all started with forwards Larry Akanbi and Fred Agyemang along with Ian Vangu and Caleb Steele on the substitute’s bench. Colney Heath are second in the Spartan South Midlands Premier Division at present and they would start as favourites here. Matt Evans was the glovesman, with a front three of returning skipper Spencer Clarke-Mardel joined by Jack Woods and league top-scorer George Devine. Options from the sidelines included Marcus Mealing, Danny Fitzgerald, Bailey Stevenson and Aaron Jewell.

The early stages of this contest were a bit subdued as both teams looked to set their stall out to gain the early advantage. Colney forwards Jack Woods and Spencer Clarke-Mardel looked to drive down the flanks to arrow in crosses to test youthful Ilford goalkeeper Josh Blackburn. The first real chance came on the quarter-hour for the visitors as a fine right-wing centre found forward George Devine those his header lacked the power to bypass Blackburn. No matter though as the Magpies did break the deadlock with twenty minutes played as forward Jack Woods made no mistake with a calm, low finish after breaching the Foxes backline. As it turned out, Adam Peek’s side were only behind for four minutes before a deep cross from creative forward Dimitri Christou superbly picked out the run of rapid forward Dion Lewis-Kirwan who rose to fire in an equally superb header right into the top corner with visiting custodian Matt Evans understandably beaten. It was a terrific goal.

Much to their credit, Colney Heath were looking as solid and organised as you would expect given their exploits this season so far, and their persistence of firing crosses into the Ilford eighteen-yard area continued, with Foxes full-back Charlie Hannam fortunate to slice a clearance beyond his near post, it could have gone anywhere. Both sides were also conceding free-kicks with alarming regularity. On thirty-six minutes, one such free-kick for the Magpies ended up falling to central midfielder Harry Shepherd and he confidently blasted low into the net to once again give Ryan Thompson’s side the lead. It could have been worse for the hosts as Heath had a goal chalked off for as Woods was deemed to have fouled stopper Blackburn who couldn’t prevent the ball going into the net, three minutes before the interval.

Ilford did importantly get back level a minute before the break as Christou was banking the assists again, with his left-sided corner finding full-back Naseer Ishanzadeh who powerfully headed past the Colney defence.

Half-Time: Ilford  2 – 2  Colney Heath

Ilford showed a lot of grit and spirit to keep themselves in this tie, and immediately after the break it was the hosts who got at their opponents with pace and strength going forward. Five minutes in to the half, Mo Kargbo did well to release forward Yemi Adelani but unfortunately he could only find the side-netting with only Evans to beat. Ishanzadeh had another chance to add to his side’s tally as a corner was well recycled in the Colney eighteen-yard box but his effort was skewed wide. Those chances would prove to be telling as just past the hour, Jack Woods was at well-placed again at the back-post to nab a tap-in from mere yards out as the Magpies led for a third time. The visitors were gradually getting their way back into the driving seat in terms of play moments before that goal. With twenty minutes remaining, substitute Ian Vangu’s goal-saving clearance earned him the plaudits of his goalkeeper.

Blackburn was to be in the action again with fifteen minutes remaining as a firm strike from Colney substitute Marcus Mealing needed the Foxes stopper to claw it away. Unfortunately for the Foxes, Colney did rubber-stamp their progression to Round Three of the Vase as Martin Standen’s late goal vanquished any chance of a comeback with four minutes left.

Full-Time: Ilford  2 – 4  Colney Heath

To be fair to Ilford, they showed a lot of industry and pace going forward but they also have a knack of conceding goals and that is what ultimately cost them here. All in all, Colney Heath did deserve to go through and forward Jack Woods has to lead the honourable mentions for me, given his work-rate down the right channel and two goals helps a bit too. Full-back Dominic Knaggs and midfielder Harry Shepherd also did well for Ryan Thompson’s side.

For the Foxes, Dion Lewis-Kirwan was again a tough prospect to deal with his his pace, movement and passing. Fellow forward Yemi Adelani also gave the Colney defence problems and full-back Charlie Hannam did a solid job in lessening the threat of the visiting forward line. All that’s left for me to do is wish Colney Heath well for the rest of the season & in the Vase and thank Ilford for their welcome today.

Cockfosters win a hard-fought contest at Southchurch to progress in the FA Vase

Southend Manor  0 – 1  Cockfosters

Report & Photos by Scott W ([Twitter: @ScottMHC14] with additional photos by Andy Wilkins (Twitter: @wilkins_media)

The Saturday game this week saw me return to Southchurch Park to see this all-Essex Senior FA Vase First Qualifying Round tie between Southend Manor and Cockfosters. Both sides were on a high after good wins in midweek league action. Manor fielded Klinton Makayabo between the sticks, with skipper Reece Latimer alongside Liam Jarrett in central defence. On the flanks were Jordan Russell and Ben Allen, with Ronnie Edwards and Luca Frankis leading the line. Among the replacements were midfielders Matthew Keiller, Gianni Frankis and Deividas Sertveitis. The ‘Fosters named a strong squad with Brad Robinson retaining the goalkeeper’s jersey, with wingers Rueben Campbell and Reece Mosanya supporting Carl Mullings and player-boss Ryan Wade in attack. On their bench was the likes of George Beattie, Harley Haag and Ned Clarke.

Both sides just before KO [Image: Scott W]

Onto the match itself then and given the wind-affected conditions, that only added to a cagey start to this Vase tie. To their credit, Manor started quite well with a free-kick from midfielder Darnel Bromfield just lobbing its way over the crossbar on six minutes. Home custodian Klinton Makayabo had to be alert twice in as many minutes as firstly on ten minutes, the French ‘keeper gathered Ryan Wade’s shot before a minute later being ever-watchful in tipping opposite number Brad Robinson’s wind-assisted free-kick over the goal frame. Manor responded moments later with a decent move involving Ben Allen and Ronnie Edwards before he passed on to winger Jordan Russell whose drive was saved by Robinson. Winger Allen showed he was up for the contest moments later by getting the better of powerful visiting centre-back Dan Odamo moments later.

Chances were at somewhat of a premium as the visitors were forced to alter their tactics, with Marcus Crowther having to revert to left-back after Prince Madu was forced off with a bad knock.  Both defences were on top for the majority of the half, with Dan Odamo and substitute Josh Fajobi clearing their lines well and Reece Latimer, Joe Elliott and Liam Jarrett doing the same at their end of the pitch for Manor. We finished the half with two half-chances. First on 39 minutes, Wade had another sight of goal quickly snuffed out as his shot was blocked at close range. Scarcely a minute later at the other end, Allen sent a well-hit curling drive narrowly over the right-side corner of goal.

Half-Time: Southend Manor  0 – 0  Cockfosters

Thus far the game had stuttered in patches though the intrigue was still there. Cockfosters started the second half strongly, with a fine run and cross by attacking full-back Danny Haigh only just evading forward Carl Mulings’ head at the far post merely two minutes after the re-start. Tricky midfielder Kaidyn Michael also fizzed a strike off-target as assistant boss Nick Mountford was trying to get his side into the ascendancy. On the stroke of the hour mark, another good run down the Manor right by the impressive Russell ended with a wind-affected clearance by Fajobi which found its way to Manor forward Luca Frankis, with his lay-off finding strike partner Ronnie Edwards though he was unable to bypass the highly-rated glovesman Robinson.

Manor were having enough of the ball and although replacement Deividas Sertveitis had some joy down the left flank since coming on, making some good runs, Manor were unable to sorely test Robinson. As we entered the last ten minutes, the hosts were given a warning as Campbell fired another strike wide after getting past the home backline. Even so, Cockfosters were mightily relieved when they finally broke the deadlock with five minutes left. A corner from Mosanya found Fajobi and the back post and his powerful header found the net. Manor did try to force the game to spot-kicks with Robinson making a strong punched clearance in a congested 18-yard box but it would be heartbreak for Craig Waters’ side this day.

Full-Time: Southend Manor  0 – 1  Cockfosters

To summarise, it wasn’t the best of spectacles as games go, but the conditions had a part to play in that. Manor will be disappointed at the defeat, however I believe there have more positives to take from their performance today than not. If they can keep this squad together then they may be in for a better season than last term. Cockfosters will have easier matches where they are in the game a lot more than they were at times today but their back five are resolute and coped well with losing Prince Madu to injury fairly early on.

Stand-out performances for me, starting with the visitors were Danny Haigh at right-back who was a threat going forward as well. Rueben Campbell and Kaidyn Michael did well instigate moves and made good driving runs too. Finally, substitute Josh Fajobi played his part in their defensive line making good clearances well before popping up with the winner late on. For Manor, centre-back Reece Latimer had another fine afternoon, clearing crosses in effectively on a regular basis. Right-back Joe Elliott also put in a good shift, particularly in defence while Jordan Russell had a good game on the right flank, making testing runs and crosses. Also, forward Luca Frankis showed good movement and trickery to bring others into the forward moves. Credit has to go to Cockfosters for staying in the game as they did and they progress to the Second Quali Round, where they will play away at Park View in the next round.

Floodlight failure means Wroxham unable to complete win at Burroughs Park

White Ensign 0 – 3 Wroxham

Report & Photos by Scott W (Twitter: @ScottMHC14)

The final match of a hectic weekend saw a return to Burroughs Park for the latest match of White Ensign’s record-breaking FA Vase run, at home to Thurlow Nunn Premier (Step 5) high-flyers Wroxham. Enisgn have already won at home to Cornard Utd and Buckingham Athletic in the Vase this term, though this would be an altogether tougher assignment. Ensign fielded goalkeeper James Parkins between the posts, a defence of Charlie Buffin, Thando Moyo and centre-backs Elliot Vile and Andy George with a front three of Dominic Locke, Connor Barnby and player-boss Brett Munyard, who had recovered from illness. Ben Austin and John Hillard were among a four-man substitute’s bench. Wroxham named captain Ollie Sutton in goal, with a midfield of sitting midfielder Jordan King, Harvey Black plus wingers Simon Lappin and Charlie Clarke supporting forwards Shaun Taylor and ex-Norwich City veteran Grant Holt, still going at the age of 38, which commands respect you have to add. The Yachtsmen could afford to name six substitutes with Tim Henery, Ryan Oakley and Tom Huckerby among them.

White Ensign looked to start the contest strongly with neat attacking play as in the opening minute support forward Connor Barnby struck an effort straight at opposition stopper Ollie Sutton from 20 yards out. Wroxham predictably responded soon afterwards, as midfielder Harvey Black struck narrowly wide of the right-side post on the quarter-hour. Black then had another opening soon after from a corner though he was unable to divert the ball past home custodian James Parkins. As we entered the midway point of the half, Brett Munyard’s sweet free-kick found centre-back Elliot Vile’s head though Sutton flew in the air rapidly to make a fine one-handed save to deny him.

That chance would hurt the hosts as only a minute later, a good ball in to the back-post by the visitors found wily striker Grant Holt, who headed back across goal and strike partner Shaun Taylor evaded his defender and bicycle-kicked home from about six yards past Parkins. Ensign could have levelled on 26 minutes as another fine free-kick from Munyard was foiled by Sutton who kept his focus and his bearings to tip it over. Wroxham were starting to unsettle the flowing passing game of the hosts, though not before on the half-hour a good ball in by energetic full-back Charlie Buffin found rapid winger Dominic Locke whose cross from the by-line found forward Luke Skinner though his header lacked direction as it flew wide.

The Yachtsmen were always a threat at the other end of the pitch, with Holt being well denied by a great tackle by centre-back Andy George, denying him a sniff of goal. Moments later, Barnby did well to play in Munyard though he couldn’t bypass Sutton and the glaring chance only increased when the rebound found Luke Skinner, only for the latter to skew his effot wide, after more good work by Locke down the right. Sutton got a bit of luck just before the interval as he rushed out of his goal too quickly though Munyard could only head wide with the goal gaping.

Half-Time: White Ensign 0 – 1 Wroxham

20191103_153545

After the interval, all the good chances Ensign had came back to bite them somewhat as four minutes into the half, desite loud cries of off-side by the home supporters, winger Charlie Clarke nipped in to beat Parkins one-on-one to give Jordan Southgate’s side that crucial second goal. Unsurprisingly, the visitors grew in confidence after that and could have been further in front if Holt hadn’t blazed wide when one-on-one with Parkins on 53 minutes. They didn’t have to wait long for the third though as five minutes later, a superb cross in from the left had enough height to evade centre-back Elliot Vile and fell right on Clarke’s head who powered home well to really add ‘insult to injury’.

With 21 minutes remaining, Locke was denied by combination of defender and Sutton though the big story was just about to hit us. With around fifteen minutes yet to play, quite suddenly the floodlights went out around the around all at once and despite pleas from the visitors to see the game out, referee Stephen Matthews halted proceedings. Despite efforts to restore the stricken generator station, the referee soon after had no option but to abandon the match.

Match Abandoned after 75 mins with score: White Ensign 0 – 3 Wroxham

All in all, this was a closer match than the scoreline may seem, though equally Ensign were unusually not clinical with their chances and were found a little wanting in their passing to the forward line. Wroxham took their chances well and showed good levels of craft as well as energy and skill.

Finally, with regards to stand-out performances here, Dominic Locke once again shone for Ensign with pace and power as well as decent passing ability to go with it. Connor Barnby also supplemented the forward line well with movement and pace, while full-back Thando Moyo made several important interceptions to stifle the impressive visitors, and the other full-back Charlie Buffin put in a typically dynamic, energetic display with good defensive nouse as well good energy. For the Yachtsmen, ex-Scottish International Simon Lappin showed enough skill and creativity to really get his side ticking, while Shaun Taylor and Charlie Clarke were constant threats to the over-run home defence at times. Anchor midfielder Jordan King also deserves a mention for breaking up opposition attacks well at times. Finally, goalkeeper Ollie Sutton made two superb saves to keep his side well in the contest before they were in the ascendancy.

Thanks also to Ensign for their hospitality today, it was also great to see former Premier League players Grant Holt and Simon Lappin in action as well. It doesn’t come around every day. It would appear the situation is that the FA have decided that the replayed match will take place at Wroxham’s Trafford Park on Wednesday night. I can only add that you can never second-guess what the FA decide.

Round-up: Essex Senior League & FA Vase Second Rd (ESL sides) (Sat 2 Nov) [ESL 19/20 3.11.19]

ESL Badge

Written by Scott W [Twitter: @ScottMHC14]

Hello and welcome to this week’s Essex Senior League review, looking back at the seven matches that took place in the League, with three ESL sides taking part in the FA Vase Second Round Proper also. Thanks for reading.

Saturday 2nd November – ESL

Cockfosters  1 – 1  Hoddesdon Town  | Chalk Lane  | Att: 87

The ‘Fosters ended their run of three-home matches on-the-spin with a late leveller against Hoddesdon. Joss Lillis put the Lilywhites ahead on 37 minutes and Simon Riddle’s side may have thought they were heading for a gutsy win though substitute Billy Murray netted in added-time to deny the visitors the win and extend the hosts unbeaten stretch to three matches. Ryan Wade’s side drop to eighth, with Hoddy only ahead of them on goal difference in 7th.

Hadley  3 – 0  Woodford Town   | Brickfield Lane | Att: 46

Hadley’s terrific home form continued as they set aside Woodford at Brickfield Lane. A brace from in-form forward Luke Jupp and one from lively winger Solomon Ofori ensured the Bricks made it five league wins in succession, rising to fourth in the standings, seven points adrift of leaders Hashtag. Woodford’s third defeat in their last five meant they fell to 11th place though their squad rebuild will mean patience is needed at this point.

Ilford  3 – 1  Enfield   | Cricklefield | Att: 28

The Foxes overwhelmed inconsistent Enfield at Cricklefield. Tela Trivelato opened the scoring on 11 minutes for Jonny Fowell’s side though the bulk of the scoring came in the latter stages of the contest. Ikechi Eze netted direct from a corner with 16 minutes remaining to give he hosts that crucial second goal. Matt Frew pulled one back for the E’s after coming off the substitutes’ bench though Trivelato had the last word as he netted his second with a minute of normal time to play. Two wins from two at home since Fowell took charge means they rise to fourth-bottom. Enfield drop to 13th.

Sawbridgeworth Town  P – P  Redbridge    | Crofters

This match at Crofters fell foul of the elements and was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

Southend Manor   1 – 0   Clapton    | Southchurch Park | Att: 12

Manor recorded what could be a very important win over fellow strugglers Clapton at Southchurch Park. Michael Ogboin got the only goal as the Southend side ended a streak of five matches without a win to go above the Tons into 17th, twelve points above bottom side Sawbridgeworth.

Sporting Bengal Utd   2 – 1  Hashtag Utd   | Mile End | Att: 101

Sporting put in a big performance to end the Tags’ ten-match league winning run at Mile End. Quick-fire goals from Bobby Redwood [30’] and talisman Steven Carvell only a minute later put them well on their way to the win. After the break, Imrul Gazi’s side had to be very resilent as Utd forced their way back into the match through Ross Gleed’s free-kick 15 minutes from time. Despite the league leaders pressurising the home side hard in the latter stages, Bengal did emerge with their first win in six matches, which puts them up to 9th place in the table. Hashtag’s fantastic streak is over though with nearest rivals Saffron Walden and Walthamstow both in FA Vase action this weekend, they remain four points clear at the summit.

St Margaretsbury  1 – 2  Tower Hamlets   | The Recreation Ground | Att: 19

Hamlets emerged with a fine win at St Mags. Goals from Ben Brookes [10’] and the in-form Suaibo Balde just before the break ended up giving the East London side the victory, their third win in their last four. The hosts replied through their own chief goal-getter Kyle Roberts on the half-hour though still fell to first loss in five matches. Hamlets rise to 12th spot now while St Mags drop to 10th.

West Essex  1 – 5  Takeley   | Mayesbrook Park  | Att: 28

West’s week went from bad to worse as Takeley powered five in a big win at Mayesbrook. In a match played in awful conditions, Jason Todd [23’] and Mitchell Das [26’] goals put Marc Das’ team in the ‘box seat’ before Bryn Thorpe made it three five minutes before the interval. After the break, former St Margaretsbury striker Charncey Dash made his mark for his new club by grabbing a fourth on 55 minutes, then Michael Castle added further gloss to the score-line with the fifth 18 minutes from time. Brad Russell’s strike was scant consolation as the Stags dropped to sixth spot after this loss, with Takeley rising above them into 5th after ending a run of four matches without a win.

The FA Vase Second Round Proper (ESL Sides)

Saffron Walden Town  3 – 4  FC Clacton   | Catons Lane | Att: 235

Walden exited the FA Vase in an enthralling contest with Thurlow Nunn Premier side FC Clacton at Catons Lane. New signing Ricky Griggs put the visitors ahead with a minute gone, though Charlie Cole levelled only four minutes later for Jason Maher’s side. Lewis Francis struck to put the hosts ahead with 16 minutes played, though nine minutes afterward Adam Hampson restored parity for Clacton. The tide really turned in favour of the East Essex Coast side as Hampson got his second 12 minutes before the break and Griggs netting just before the interval to make it 4 – 2. Ryan Fleming made it tight with the hosts’ third goal nine minutes after the break though Cacton withstood the pressure to advance.

News: Tonight (Sunday), it’s been announced by Saffron Walden that long-serving forward Lewis Francis has departed, with the club thanking him for all his efforts in his time there. I’d like to wish Lewis well in his next chapter, certainly been an important player for the Bloods.

Stansted  1 – 0  Mildenhall Town  | Hargrave Park | Att: 142

The Airportmen edged a close game with Thurlow Nunn Premier side Mildenhall at Hargrave Park. Ryan Ramsey got the only goal on the stroke of half-time to ensure that his side are the only ESL representatives remaining in the FA Vase this season. Congrats to co-managers Paul Pittuck & John Watters and the team on their progress.

Walthamstow   2 – 3  AFC Uckfield Town   | Wadham Lodge | Att: 74

AFC Uckfield sent ‘Stow out of the FA Vase with a narrow win at Wadham Lodge. It started well for the hosts as Ollie Fortune struck ten minutes in to put them ahead, though the start of the second half saw the game turn. First, Dan Okosie struck five minutes after the resumption to level the tie, before Ellis Cormack put AFC ahead five minutes later. Richie Welsh got a crucial third goal for the visitors with 18 minutes left and though Samrai Gebrai made it a tight finish with a second for ‘Stow 11 minutes from time, the visitors held on despite the hosts being unhappy at ‘unsportsmanlike behaviour’ by their opposition. Even so, Ryan Maxwell’s side will hone their focus in on the league, as they have matches to catch up on in the following weeks.

Ensign make Round Two of the Vase as clinical finishing sees them defeat Athletic

White Ensign  4 – 1  Buckingham Athletic

Report & Photos by Scott W (Twitter: @ScottMHC14)

The weekend’s second match saw me return to Burroughs Park to see White Ensign face Spartan South Midlands Division One side Buckingham Athletic in the FA Vase First Round Proper as Brett Munyard’s team looked to advance this record-breaking Vase run. Ensign were missing defenders Elliot Vile and David Limber plus forward Connor Barnby tough did field James Parkins between the sticks with skipper Jake McWee reverting to centre-back alongside Andy George, with a front three of player-boss Munyard, Luke Skinner and Dominic Locke. Recent signing Jason Reynolds-Blanche joined full-backs Thando Moyo and Jack Maleary as options from the bench. Athletic fielded Joshua Mcadoo in goal, with full-backs Daniel Hassell and Stuart Ironmonger and a front two of Matt Cruse and Jeremiah Adams.

Both sides had half-chances in the early minutes of this encounter with Ensign winger Dominic Locke’s drive from 18 yards having the accuracy but lacking the power to defeat visiting goalkeeper Joshua Mcadoo, who gathered comfortably. At the other end, a fizzing drive by Athletic midfielder Jacob Williamson wasn’t far off the top corner before sailing over. The visitors nearly led on ten minutes as Jeremiah Adams got in on goal ahead of home custodian James Parkins though he could only lob over with the glovesman retreating.

The hosts were seeking to find their offensive rhythm as we past the quarter-hour mark, with creative midfielder John Hilliard looking for that telling pass into the forwards. The visitors were adopting a high defensive line to catch the Ensign attack off-side though with 25 minutes played, Locke played in Munyard who couldn’t get a telling strike away as the angle rapidly became more acute at the near post. Ensign did break the deadlock two minutes later though as forward Luke Skinner received the ball around eight yards out, took a touch past his marker and lashed the ball home past Mcadoo.

Things got better for the Eastern Senior League South side as five minutes later, a free-kick from deep by Hilliard found Munyard who ran on and his centre found centre-back Andy George who stroked home well to double his side’s advantage. As half-time approached, Athletic had a sighter at goal as Williamson’s free-kick had to be cleared at the 2nd attempt.

Half-Time: White Ensign 2 – 0  Buckingham Athletic

There was certainly enough action in this match to keep you wondering who would emerge victorious, as Athletic played some neat football at times, though they just couldn’t quite pin down that oh-so-important final ball or their finishing. However, it was the hosts who another big stride to progression two minutes into the second period as good persistence by Luke Skinner ended with him playing in Munyard who slotted in past Mcadoo with only the ‘keeper to beat.

That said, any notion that Buckingham were out of the contest were quickly snuffed out as on 49 minutes, Jeremiah Adams tucked in a rebound after Parkins had made a one-handed save to deny the initial effort from close range. Game on, again. Ensign once again pushed forward, with Skinner having two further chances going just off-target. Athletic could count themselves unfortunate as well as ten minutes into the half, Adams hit another good effort which clipped the corner-angle of the woodwork from a narrow angle. Visiting winger Chris Parr then shot just wide moments later to emphasize that Neil Griffiths’ side were creating chances.

Ensign restored their three-goal lead just short of the hour as a superb run by Locke, chasing a ‘lost cause’ down the left wing saw him cross in though it evaded Skinner though did find a unfortunate defender at the far post who convincingly headed home into the opposite corner. Credit has to go to Buckingham as they did not stop striving, though were thwarted by a combination of close misses and brave tackles by the home defence, notably by centre-back Andy George. Munyard was also denied a second with 15 minutes left as his effort was cleared off the line as Ensign stood firm to prevent a nervy end to this tussle.

Full-Time : White Ensign  4 – 1  Buckingham Athletic

The scoreline may give you the impression that this was a serene, comfortable win for Ensign though there are matches (there’s been a few in the 2019-20 season alone) where results have been a bit misleading and this is one of them. Athletic were more than decent at times and made the hosts work hard though in the end, the sheer pace, incisive attacking moves and finishing were the difference-makers here as Ensign moved to Round Two, where they will welcome Thurlow Nunn Premier side Wroxham.

In terms of stand-out performances, for Ensign there was the dynamic pace and passing of winger Dominic Locke, the sheer persistence and craft of forward Luke Skinner plus the energetic full-back Charlie Buffin and tigerish midfielder Ben Austin. Buckingham had some good performances too with winger Chris Parr, goalscorer Jeremiah Adams among them.

Finally, you have to take stock of the difference that there is at Ensign this season, led by the on-pitch management team of Brett Munyard & Matt Healy and the committee off-the-pitch. I don’t think it is an exaggeration to say that they are ‘being noticed’ in the area and you have to say good on them for that.
