The penultimate weekend of regular action in the Essex Senior League this season took me to Oakside for this interesting battle which saw Redbridge entertain Stansted, who really needed a win here to keep the title race going into that final day’s action. The Motormen have suffered with injuries & unavailability of late and named Harvey Wright, on loan from AFC Hornchurch in goal, with Paul Preston and Daniel Gilchrist on the flanks with Daniel McCullock and Walid Chaib up front. Among the substitutes was the returning Calvin Poku and Joe Maskell.
Stansted have had a setttled squad for some time and retained Charlie Turner between the sticks, a defence of Jamie Bennett, skipper Billy Coyne and centre-backs Sam West & Jack West. Wingers Callum Ibe and Jack Mitchell were supporting forwards James Peagram and Jordan Palmer, with Carl Mullings & Ollie Bell among those on the bench.
The match got underway with both sides looking to get the breakthrough early. Former Stansted winger Paul Preston got in on goal in the first minute though blazed over the woodwork. Minutes afterward, ‘Blue Brazil’ winger Jack MItchell sent a good ball in from the right, though the home backline intercepted with forward James Peagram lurking to fire home from close range. Paul Pittuck & Marc Benterman’s side didn’t have to wait long to break the deadlock as after 11 minutes, Peagram played in Mitchell who expertly lobbed Wright to send the ball nestling into the net.
The visitors were finding space in between the Redbridge defence and midfield and spurned a few more chances as from Billy Coyne’s free-kick, Peagram nodded wide before just past the half-hour, a fizzing cross into the area by midfielder Charlie Barlow was connected with well by Peagram though stopper Harvey Wright did well to parry away from danger. At the other end, a rare fumble by Stansted custodian Charlie Turner led to Preston picking the ball up though with only Turner to beat, he skewed his shot wide of goal.
Redbridge were showing promise in their passing without really creating the chances they needed, with support forward Walid Chaib showing good trickery and energy in trying to orchestrate attacks along with deep-lying playmaker Liam Burgess pinging balls forward. The Airportmen finished the half strongly as Mitchell made a surging run down the right flank before sending in a telling cross with Peagram’s good header well-denied by Wright. Four minutes before half-time, the visitors’ lead was doubled as a winger Callum Ibe’s cross was headed home by centre-back Jack West. In fairness, it was a lead the visitors deserved and showed the gulf in terms of finishing as well.
Half-time: Redbridge 0 – 2 Stansted
After the break, the tempo of the match fizzled out a little in the early stages. Mitchell again showed his energetic nature with home full-back Billy Willis doing well to deny him a chance from a narrow angle. Midway through the half, Willis did well to smash an effort against the woodwork from just outside the box which substitute Calvin Poku had to react quickly to though could only head wide. Fellow forward Daniel Gilchrist was limited to half-chances from mid-range really as he and Preston were both growing frustrated.
The hosts had a further setback as just before the hour, centre-back Daniel Smith was dismissed for two bookings, the second of which for denying Ibe a run at goal and this did affect the hosts, particularly going forward.
Stansted, buoyed on by their travelling ‘Blue Army’ which added a welcome atmosphere to proceedings, could’ve put the match beyond doubt though after Ibe had nicked the ball off midfielder Charleston Browne, he struck wide before anchor midfielder Paul Clayton was twice denied by Wright, who enhanced his standing with a good display here. It was promotion-chasing Stansted who sealed a good win with two late goals. On 83 minutes, Clayton slotted home well before in added-time, Jack West got his second of the afternoon with a tap-in following a super curling cross in to the back-post.
Full-Time: Redbridge 0 – 4 Stansted
In summary, The Airportmen will be happy to have won this game quite conclusively. But for some alert and classy goalkeeping by loanee Harvey Wright for the hosts, the margin could have been more. Redbridge did well going forward though looked somewhat sluggish defensively at times, with Walid Chaib doing well in the #10 role with his dribbling, quick-thinking and pace. Wright also impressed, as did tricky winger Paul Preston, against his old club. For Stansted, Jack Mitchell was a constant threat on the right flank, with Callum Ibe predictably having another strong match, as did energetic centre-back Jack West and experienced forward James Peagram, who can count himself unfortunate that he didn’t get on the score-sheet here.
Finally, my thanks to Redbridge for their kind hospitality, Adam Silver for assistance with team-sheets and to ESL President Rob Errington.
