Saturday 18th August
AFC Sudbury 0 – 1 Heybridge Swifts | King’s Marsh (3G) | Att: 285
This one was settled very late on at King’s Marsh. Sam Bantick’s 94th-minute spot-kick narrowly edged Swifts to the victory. It goes down on the scoresheet as their first defeat of the new season.
Barking 2 – 3 Witham Town | Mayesbrook Park | Att: 72
This topsy-turvy encounter was also settled in the dying embers of the match. Things started well for the Blues as new signing Daniel Cheema opened the scoring just two minutes in, before young forward Henry Fisher levelled the match on 28 minutes. The goals kept coming as Rashid Kamara [58′] struck for the hosts though again the spirited visitors restored parity through Andrew Tirivanhu on 61 minutes. More drama was to come though as ex-Clapton & Bowers & Pitsea player Johnny Ashman grabbed the winner on the 90 minute mark to give Town their first win of the season.
Basildon Utd 2 – 1 Mildenhall Town | Gardiners Close | Att: 159
The Bees made the most of their first Isthmian League match in over 25 years with victory over the Hall at Gardiners Close. Giant forward Brian Moses opened the scoring in the first minute of the second half, though the hosts were pegged back by Thomas Debenham’s effort [64′]. Game on. Though enter centre-stage the Essex Senior League’s top scorer from 2017/18 – Marcus Bowers who got the winner with 11 minutes remaining. Basildon held on to give Marc Harrison his first win in the new division.
Bury Town 1 – 1 Romford | Aldiss Park | Att: 296
The hosts recovered late on to deny Romford a second straight win. Paul Martin’s side took the lead right on half-time through recent signing Roddy Lemba. Town rescued a point six minutes from the end thanks to Tanner Call’s strike.
Dereham Town 4 – 2 Coggeshall Town | Ram Meadow | Att: 308
Dereham produced an excellent response to a humbling defeat last weekend at Aveley to defeat newcomers Coggeshall at Ram Meadow. Nnamdi Nwachuku gave the visitors a surprise lead nine minutes into the match though only two minutes later, Ashley Jarvis levelled things up for the hosts. Centre-back Luke Wilson restored Coggeshall’s advantage on 23 minutes and it stayed that way at the break.
Two rapid goals from Dion Frary [62′] and Danny Beaumont [67′] gave Dereham the lead before Beaumont’s late second goal confirmed the win for Neal Simmons’ men.
Grays Athletic 1 – 1 Canvey Island | Parkside (3G) | Att: 221
Ath were held by the Islanders at Parkside. Mitch Hahn’s 36th-minute opener gave Grays the impetus at the break though Frankie Merrifield’s strike seven minutes into the second half helped Danny Heale’s side to claim a draw as both sides remain unbeaten.
Great Wakering Rovers 2 – 0 Felixstowe & Walton Utd | Burroughs Park | Att: 108
Last season’s Essex Senior League champions Great Wakering defeated last term’s Eastern Counties League champs Felixstowe at Burroughs Park. Goals from Steven Butterworth [11′] and Billy Johnson [22′] saw GWR to the victory.
Maldon & Tiptree 1 – 0 Brentwood Town | Park Drive | Att: 120
The Jammers narrowly edged the Blues at Park Drive thanks to Sammie McLeod’s 90th-minute winner to obtain their first victory of the season. Brentwood’s first match of the new campaign ended in frustrating defeat for manager Craig Shipman.
Soham Town Rangers 2 – 2 Tilbury | Julius Martin Lane | Att: 156
Tilbury were denied by a last-gasp salvo by nine-man Soham at Julius Martin Lane. Adam Vyse put the Dockers ahead right on half-time and Lewis Smith doubled the lead two minutes into the re-start. After Lewis Endacott and Jon Kaye had both been dismissed for the hosts, Sam Mulready first put away a spot-kick on the 90 minute marker before Mulready struck an injury-time leveller completed an improbable comeback for the hosts.
