On another searingly hot day, the Essex Senior League’s opening weekend continued as West Essex welcomed Sawbridgeworth Town to Mayesbrook Park.

West gave debuts to midfielders Samraj Gill and Callum Bloss while captain Tom MacLeod led the line alongside Issac Marfo with Jack Coker between the sticks. Sawbridgeworth are another side who have lost a few players during the summer, Aaron Thomas, goalkeeper James Mays and the Cleaver brothers have moved on. John Watters’ side named a front three of Daryl Doolan, Lewis Roberts and the recently-returned Ollie Fortune.

The match began with the hosts getting the possession game going though Sawbridgeworth had the early chances of note as forwards Doolan and Fortune both couldn’t find a way past Jack Coker in the Stags goal. Although there arguably wasn’t enough ‘end product’ being created by the home side, debutant winger Samraj Gill certainly did give the Sawbo full-backs a tricky time of it in this match with a good range of passing as well.

On 16 minutes, a sweetly-struck curling free-kick by midfielder Tom Jelliman so nearly gave Sawbridgeworth the lead, gunning for the top corner though Coker pulled off a superb save at full-stretch to tip it round the post. Sawbo did break the deadlock four minutes later though as centre-back Josh Knight grabbed a tap-in. Fortune could’ve made it two soon after though couldn’t beat Coker when one-on-one with the ‘keeper.

West came back into the match though were a little guilty of not ‘making the most’ of their chances. Debutant Callum Bloss blasted a strike wide midway through the half while after forward Isaac Marfo’s good surging run, midfielder Joe Lefley struck wide. Gill also sent a good effort just over the woodwork after the half-hour. Sawbo were unfortunate to not double their lead as skipper Matt Frew’s header was cleared off the line on 37 minutes.

Moments later, West were level as midfielder Greg Frederick was well-found by skipper MacLeod, chasing down a lost cause down the right flank, and Frederick lashed home nicely and half-time soon followed.

Half-Time: West Essex  1 – 1   Sawbridgeworth Town

West started the second half well with Bloss and Gill involved in a good passing move though Sawbo re-took the lead on the stroke of the hour with forward Lewis Roberts being well picked out making a great run through the retreating Stags defence and beat Coker with a powerful effort that the ‘keeper got a hand to but couldn’t keep out. Coker was in action again soon afterwards to deny both Roberts and Fortune and Kwame Kwateng’s team were thankful as they restored parity on 62 minutes through Macleod’s calm finish after an error by Sawbo’s Knight.

The topsy-turvy nature of this enthralling match swung in Sawbo’s favour just four minutes later as Roberts calmly struck again after being found by substitute Jack Cousins. Sawbo had to really battle to keep hold of their lead in the latter stages as visiting custodian David Leader denied substitute Emmanuel Obeng-Kouassi and Lefley as the visitors held on to claim a good if narrow victory.
