Hello & welcome to another Bostik North round-up, here on the blog. Ahead of the Saturday action, Friday night’s match between Brentwood Town v Aveley was postponed due to an unfit pitch.
Here’s the round-up, followed as usual by a list of the results in Bostik Division South this weekend:
Saturday 27th January
AFC Hornchurch 1 – 0 Norwich Utd
| Venue: Briidge Avenue | Attendance: 208
The Urchins left it late though grabbed the win over Utd at Bridge Avenue. George Purcell got the solitary goal two minutes from time to give the hosts the win after their midweek home defeat to Barking. In doing so, Jimmy McFarlane’s men extended their lead at the summit to ten points. The Planters’ five-match unbeaten run ended here and they are third-bottom, six points clear of bottom side Cheshunt.
Barking 1 – 0 Dereham Town
| Venue: Mayesbrook Park | Attendance: 61
Barking grabbed their second narrow win in less than a week with this success at Mayesbrook Park. A Billy Jones penalty on the half-hour was enough to secure the points and with it Barking’s third win in their last six league outings and sit in 7th place, three points outside the play-off positions. Dereham are now winless in their last three matches, residing in 5th place.
Bury Town 1 – 2 Cheshunt
| Venue: Ram Meadow | Attendance: 243
Cheshunt picked up a crucial win courtesy of a late comeback at Ram Meadow. Kyran Clements put Town ahead ten minutes after the interval though late strikes from Jason Hallett [85′] and substitute Kyle Roberts [90’+1] sealed a dramatic turnaround for Craig Edwards’ side. Bury Town have now lost three on-the-trot and are in 10th place. Cheshunt’s eight-match winless run ended here and the bottom side gained ground on the sides above them, and are now only two points adrift of nearest rivals Romford.
Grays Athletic 1 – 1 Hertford Town
| Venue: Parkside | Attendance: 185
Grays were held by fellow mid-table outfit Hertford at Parkside. Jamie Slabber put Ath ahead on 27 minutes though on-loan Billericay Town forward Charlie Cole [58′] levelled to claim a point. Grays’ fifth draw in their last ten matches sees them in 9th place. Hertford’s unbeaten run stretches to four league matches now and they are 14th.
Heybridge Swifts 0 – 1 AFC Sudbury
| Venue: Scraley Road | Attendance: 241
Swifts’ disappointing run continued as they narrowly lost out to in-form Sudbury. Recent signing Phil Kelly got the only goal three minutes in to claim the Suds’ third win in their last six matches, they rise to 11th in the table. Heybridge’s fourth defeat in succession sees them 18th though they still have at least nine games in hand over the majority of teams around them.
Potters Bar Town 1 – 0 Bowers & Pitsea
| Venue: Pakex Stadium | Attendance: 134
The Scholars picked another another good win, this time edging out promotion hopefuls Bowers & Pitsea. Eoin Casey struck five minutes from time to give the hosts their sixth win in their last ten league matches and rise to 4th spot, seven points behind their opponents here. Rob Small’s side saw their four-match winning run ended here though remain in 2nd place, ten points behind AFCHornchurch.
Romford 0 – 2 Canvey Island
| Venue: Ship Lane | Attendance: 162
Canvey emerged victorious in this encounter at Ship Lane. Second-half goals from Mitchell Gilbey [64′] and George Sykes [85′] were enough to seal the points and give the Islanders their third win in their last five matches as they sit in the table. Romford’s third defeat in their last six encounters means they remain second-bottom though they lead Cheshunt by only two points.
Soham Town Rangers 3 – 0 Haringey Borough
| Venue: Julius Martin Lane | Attendance: 135
Soham saw off the challenge of out-of-form Boro to claim the win here. Craig Gillies struck on the cusp of half-time to give the hosts the lead, before second-half strikes from Callum Russell [62′] and Joe Carden [69′] ensured the hosts fifth win in their last ten matches and they rise to 15th place in the table. Haringey’s winless stretch now stands at four matches as they are now in 8th spot, four points away from the play-offs.
Tilbury 2 – 5 Mildenhall Town
| Venue: Chadfields | Attendance: 71
Tilbury were undone by a first-half onslaught as Mildenhall claim the victory at Chadfields. Thomas Debenham struck twice [4′ & 22′] either side of a Gareth Simpson goal [12′] to give the visitors the advantage before Siju Odelusi pulled one back for Joe Keith’s side. Debenham secured his hat-trick just shy of the half-hour before Adam Vyse made it 2-4 on the hour mark. Mildenhall’s Debenham capped a special afternoon for him with his fourth goal seven minutes from time. Tilbury’s fourth defeat in their last six matches sees them fall to 17th place while Town have only tasted defeat twice in their last nine matches now and they are in 16th place, ahead of Tilbury on goal difference.
Waltham Abbey 0 – 1 Maldon & Tiptree
| Venue: Capershotts | Attendance: 82
Maldon edged Abbey to claim the win and end their three-match winless mini-run. Keanu Williams’s goal on the hour did the job for Kevin Horlock’s side. Abbey have now lost four league matches in-a-row as they reside in 12th place while Maldon are occupying the last play-off spot in 6th.
Witham Town 0 – 1 Ware | Venue: Spa Roadn
Ware continued their ‘mini-revival’ under John Dreyer with a narrow win at Spa Road. Unfortunately for the hosts, a Lance Akins OG four minutes from time gave the visitors all three points and their third win in their last five matches as they sit 20th, eight points clear of the relegation spot while Witham suffered only their second loss in their last seven outings here and are in 13th place.
