On a chilly evening at Oakside, in-form Redbridge took on Ilford in the ‘169 Derby’ & another potentially important Essex Senior League encounter. Redbridge kept the same starting XI & the same personnel on the bench as they had in their previous match, a 2-1 win at Barkingside. Ilford made five changes to the starting XI following their defeat at Wakering last weekend.
The match began with Redbridge having the first shot on goal a couple of minutes in as right winger Joshua Hutchinson had a pop though visiting goalkeeper Chris Clark made the save. The hosts had a goal chalked off for offside six minutes in, tall forward Brian Moses the player being denied. At times, Ilford seemed to be playing a wing-back system with Sam Buffour on the right and Khadean Campbell on the left.
The hosts did take the lead on the quarter-hour as Eljay Worrell’s floated free-kick was spilled by Clark and found its way to Moses who grabbed a tap-in at the second attempt. Ilford nearly responded three minutes later as Chris Lockwood’s free-kick was heading in before Redbridge goalkeeper Lewis Greene tipped it over the bar. Soon afterward, Campbell fizzed a shot just wide of the post before Motormen midfielder Patrick Duggan blasted a low shot wide of goal.
It should be said that the recent rain had made the pitch a slippy surface, which made things difficult for players to keep their footing at times. Twenty-five minutes into the match, Redbridge winger Reside Coxi-Sebastfao was about to ‘pull the trigger’ in the area before being denied by an excellent last-ditch tackle by Ilford defender Baffour. As the half-hour mark approached, Campbell forced Greene into making a save with his goal-bound effort. The hosts could’ve been two ahead as well as Moses had a header saved by Clark.
The Motormen did go two goals to the good with ten minutes remaining of the half as Brian Moses played strike partner Calvin Poku in with a neat through-ball and Poku lobbed Clark well to double his side’s lead. It could’ve been three five minutes later though Moses’ header was denied by the ever-alert Clark, who made a good save.
Half-Time: Redbridge 2 – 0 Ilford
The second half started with the hosts on the front-foot as Poku & Moses both drew saves from Clark in the first eight minutes of the half. Ilford’s Billy Rix headed wide from Lockwood’s free-kick nine minutes in. And the hosts punished them for not converting their chances as on 57 minutes, after good build-up play, Sam Shepard’s right-wing cross was headed home well by Moses to pretty much extinguish any doubt where the points were going. Ilford made all three substitutions in the first 15 minutes of the half and whilst they had a few chances on goal, Greene in the Redbridge goal was fairly comfortable, assisted by a solid back four in front of him. With 15 minutes of the match to play, the over-worked Clark denied both Poku and substitute (and ex-Ilford forward) Lindsipho Mtyanda in the same move as the hosts continued to press forward. Clark was beaten to the ball two minutes later by Poku who rounded him before slotted home into an empty net.
Ilford did pull a goal back seven minutes from time as forward James Peagram’s shot from range was spilled by Greene and substitute Jamie Hart, following up, got a tap-in. Redbridge had the last word though as substitute Courtney Homans got a late fifth to add to a dominant performance from Ricky Eaton & Joey May’s side.
The hosts’ front four of Moses, Poku, Coxi-Sebastfao and Hutchinson really were tough for the Ilford defence to handle though conceding goals will be a concern for manager Allan Fenn and his side. For the visitors, goalkeeper Clark really did keep the score down and Campbell and Buffour showed their pace and energy at times as well in what was a disappointing team performance.
One thing I will add is if the Motormen keep this sort of form up, they will have a good season, perhaps an excellent one challenging that top-six. After this result, Redbridge’s 5th of the season, they sit in 7th place in the table while Ilford are in 10th spot.
