On a gloomy evening at Cricklefield, Barkingside welcomed old Oakside rivals Redbridge in another Essex Senior League encounter. Before the match, all the players & officials gathered on the pitch for a minute’s silence in respect of those injured in the incident at Parsons Green Tube Station earlier today.

Redbridge started the match a little brighter, with forward Brian Moses lofting an early effort on goal over the bar. The visitors had a further duo of half-chances though Moses couldn’t find the target. Then, on the quarter-hour, fellow Motormen forward Calvin Poku’s shot was well-saved by home goalkeeper Will Hunt. This stirred the hosts into action and winger Joe Newbold was denied by Redbridge ‘stopper Lewis Greene.

For the next little while, both sides had possession though there was little end product. Moses was back in the thick of the action on 33 minutes when he held off a Barkingside defender and struck his shot well though it cannoned off the bar. The visitors looked a little more threatening in attack but there wasn’t much in it at half-time.

Half-Time: Barkingside 0 – 0  Redbridge

After the break, the visitors started well as a deflected effort from Moses called Hunt into action again as he parried the ball away for a corner. From that corner, at the second attempt, Shaun Harris headed home to give Redbridge the lead three minutes into the second half.

Five minutes afterward, ‘Side midfielder Bradley Joseph’s drive went over the bar and soon after Moses tested Hunt again with the forward’s drive being well saved by the Barkingside ‘keeper. The hosts levelled on 66 minutes as forward Michael Ogboin timed his run into the box well and was rewarded as he slotted home a cross from the right flank. The hosts could’ve been ahead soon after as substitute Tony Cookey drilled his goal-bound effort well though Greene pulled off an excellent save to deny him.

The Motormen ended up scoring the winner in slightly bizarre fashion as a Barkingside defender’s clearance in the six-yard box struck Poku two yards out and trickled into the right corner of the net. Although the goal was fortuitous, Riclky Eaton & Joey May’s side probably edged this encounter on the basis that they were more threatening going forward.

There were highlights for Barkingside though as goalkeeper Will Hunt and winger Matheus Santos stood out for them in my opinion tonight. For Redbridge, Brian Moses and Lewis Greene’s performances helped gain this win in my view.

Full-Time: Barkingside  1 – 2   Redbridge

Ogboin 66’             Harris 48’, Poku 83’

I’d like to thank Barkingside for their hospitality and mention that they are one of a few clubs this season charging £5 for admission (adults) for ESL matches this season I believe and they are a good club. Best wishes to both sides for the rest of the season. Redbridge are in 8th place after this win (prior to the Saturday matches) whilst Barkingside sit in 10th place.

I'm a Mental Health survivor (been surviving for years) & campaigner. I also like Music & Sport. This blog is centred on all things Non-League Football, mainly Match Reports of matches I've seen (mainly Essex Senior League (ESL) but also other Leagues) though it also houses the regular round-up's of the ESL action plus the Essex Olympian League divisions regularly. It also has the odd post about the scary world that we're all in, talking from a Mental Health perspective. Thank you for reading.
