On a fairly serene evening at Cricklefield, Barkingside took on Basildon Utd in an Essex Senior League encounter, with both sides gunning for a top-ten finish.

The hosts started the match fairly well, with on-loan forward Jakub Berkowicz shooting wide after being played in by winger Kai Heather. Fellow forward Luke With managed to get past visiting ‘keeper David Leader in another attack though couldn’t turn the ball home.

Basildon improved after the quarter-hour and made the hosts pay for missing those early chances as a initial effort by forward Malaki Toussaint hit the bar before Jack Adlington headed the rebound in from close range. Adlington could have made it two just past the half-hour after a lovely through-ball but couldn’t finish. As half-time approached, Basildon captain John-Joe Slater had an effort blocked on the goal-line as ‘Side looked to keep it tight going into the break. Just before the break, a good ball from George Ademilyu nearly found Berkowicz though the ball just trickled out of reach for the young forward.

Half-Time: Barkingside 0 – 1 Basildon Utd

Five minutes into the second half, Barkingside were awarded a penalty for a foul. Luke With stepped up and unfortunately skewed the ball well wide of the left-hand post. Just past the hour mark, ‘Side were awarded another penalty as visiting defender George Whitby was adjudged to have handled in the box and promptly got his second booking. With once again stepped up to take it, though this time, it crashed in with a little assistance from the upright.

With the visitors reduced to ten men, the home side went for the win, and Heather had a good strike on goal deflected for a corner mid-way through the half.  ‘Side had further chances to take the lead though Marvin Birch, Berkowicz and substitute Jason Fontaine couldn’t hit the target.

Basildon were still a bit tricky on the counter-attack though as pacy forward Ayoola Odedoyin made a couple of good runs down the flanks after coming off the bench.

Overall, a bit of a battle though the Bees will be the happier of the two sides I would imagine, given that Barkingside had enough chances to score three or four this evening. Barkingside are in 11th place in the ESL table, a point behind Basildon in 10th spot.

It also has the odd post about the scary world that we're all in, talking from a Mental Health perspective. Thank you for reading.
