On a quite chilly afternoon at the ‘Rec’, relegation-threatened Rochford Town took on Lakeside in a Essex Olympian League Division Two encounter.
The home side started the match quite nervously, as Lakeside took the game to them early on with their forwards showing their intent with direct running and a touch of pace, creating a few chances to take the lead though these were snuffed out by the Town defence.
It wasn’t until the almost mid-point of the first period that the hosts started to get into the game in an attacking sense, buoyed on by manager Garry Pond throughout.
At the crest of this wave, Rochford were awarded a spot-kick on the half-hour, which they duly converted to go in-front. That lead would only last seven minutes though as just moments after the home ‘keeper saved a one-on-one opportunity, Lakeside levelled with a cool finish.
Half-Time: Rochford Town 1 – 1 Lakeside
The second half saw the visitors gradually re-asserting themselves and after a few further chances went begging, the visitors took the lead for the first time mid-way through the second half, courtesy of a very well-executed chip over the Town ‘Keeper.
Rochford knew they were under pressure at this point and one big chance with ten miunutes left, unfortunately the Town forward couldn’t connect with a cross into a congested penalty area.
Lakeside made them pay just moments later as they took advantage of a goalkeeping error to curl the ball home and make the points safe.
Full-Time: Rochford Town 1 – 3 Lakeside
No doubt Lakeside boss Chris Wright will be happy with the win as they go seven points clear of the bottom two. Rochford by contrast, are only a point clear of Ramsden Scotia, who reside in the second relegation position & they won today, defeating high-flying Herongate Athletic 2-1. Scotia also have a game in hand.
