On a pleasant Tuesday evening at Oakside, Redbridge took on early season strugglers Burnham Ramblers in an ESL encounter.

Both sides began the match nervously though the home side had the better of the early chances. Redbridge forward Kieran English misdirecting a free header wide of goal from captain Adam Hunt’s free kick. Oscar Williams & Oliver Bell also spurned decent chances, though the latter’s effort was well saved by visiting ‘keeper Reece Clarke.

The Ramblers, sensing they were on the back-foot, started to push forward in the second part of the first period with Burnham forward Bobby Barker looking lively. The visitors were soon awarded a penalty, though forward Charlie Hughes blazed it high over the bar. A real let-off for the Motormen.

Redbridge did finish the first period stronger with Williams, Hunt & English all having chances. Burnham also had to resort to last-ditch defending, clearing one or two efforts off the goal-line!

Half-Time:  Redbridge 0 – 0 Burnham Ramblers

As the teams came onto the pitch for the second period, Redbridge needed to start well. So they did, hitting the bar with one good strike before Williams was fouled in the area, captain Hunt putting away the resulting spot-kick to give Redbridge the lead.

Burnham though, to their credit, didn’t let their heads drop with winger Ben Clarke & Barker both shooting wide & Hughes, seeking to atone for his penalty miss, had his effort saved by home ‘keeper Jake Mernaga.

Unfortunately for the visitors, Redbridge soon doubled their lead through captain Hunt, then substitute Jacob Dingli had a good effort well-saved by Clarke. Motormen winger Aron Gordon then added a third with a well-taken effort.

Redbridge pushed to kill the game off in the latter stages, cue more frantic defending from the visitors, which led to a second penalty of the evening for the home side, Burnham defender Bobby Bird given a straight red card for handling on the goal-line. Hunt scored the resulting spot-kick for his hat-trick.

Credit must go to Burnham for not giving up, though they looked somewhat toothless up front, though the score-line did flatter the home side, who took all three points.

I'm a Mental Health survivor (been surviving for years) & campaigner. I also like Music & Sport. This blog is centred on all things Non-League Football, mainly Match Reports of matches I've seen (mainly Essex Senior League (ESL) but also other Leagues) though it also houses the regular round-up's of the ESL action plus the Essex Olympian League divisions regularly. It also has the odd post about the scary world that we're all in, talking from a Mental Health perspective. Thank you for reading.
